Keep in mind that reality checks can be misleading. For instance, if in a Dream you try to hold your breath and you expect not to be able to breathe, then you won't. But you would have been Dreaming. Everything in the Dreamscape is controlled by you, whether intentionally or subconsciously. The most reliable way to check is to ingrain the habit of asking yourself if you are Dreaming and then try focusing on remembering how you came to be where you are. Your memory is very helpful.
