You will have to learn to stop forcing yourself to wake up. It is not your only option, but if you always wake yourself up, whenever you are in an intense situation, you will never get better at dream control. Your level control is based on things like expectation and anxiety. You will have to learn to control your fear, if you are going to learn ways to manipulate the dream and push back your nightmare creatures.

What you'll have to do first is learn to accept and understand the 'it's only a dream' ideology. When something starts to freak you out, and you're lucid, fight back. If you're scared of someone shoving you against a wall, just imagine how hard it's going to be do defeat the ghosts and goblins of your worst nightmares. The next time, someone pushes you against a wall or something, you tell them "This is MY dream! Get the hell BACK!!!" and then push them away with your mind. You don't even have to use your 'hands.' It is your mind, and you have the power to push those enemies off of you without lifting a finger. You have to know that, to be able to take advantage of it. Jumping out of the dream is a way of saying that you're the victim, and you have to escape. Thinking that way is ultimately going to keep you away from being confident enough to take control of your dreams in the first place.

Many, many dreams are like this. You will have to start looking for more absurd dream signs. The more familiar you get with the dream state, the more you'll begin to realize that the sensory feeling can be exactly like waking life, so you can't used to using that as a way to tell whether you're dreaming or not.

Next time, don't try to wake yourself up.

Does anyone else experience these types of dreams?
Yes.
Hope this all helps, and Welcome to Dream Views!
