Lucid dreams normally occur in light sleep rather than deeper sleep. When you're closer to being awake, it's easier to become conscious in your dream. That's why a lot of people have short LDs in their first DILDs--they're getting lucid near the end of the dream because they're close to waking already.

Personally I'm a very light sleeper, and I think that's part of why it's so much easier for me to get lucid. The last year or two I've been getting deeper and more refreshing sleep, but I've had a harder time LDing because of it and I've had to adapt.
