Not such a good idea - you can't have any kind of dream if you can't sleep in the first place!

I suggest reading anything by Neil Gaiman.

I pick up a half-eaten copy of a book by Neil Gaiman, and decide this is all his fault.

Just do something you really don't want to do. I (accidentally) induced a terrifying lucid nightmare by revisiting a particularly unpleasant place from my childhood.

Light a house on fire then run to the top story of it? Walk into a shady alleyway that you know you will get mugged in. Tell your best friend you hate them. LoL

Get sick and run a fever. That is about the only time I get a nightmare.

hey inthemirror, im just like you and i love nightmares the most important thing is to expect something, let me tell you my personnal favorite recurrent nightmare (which i had from maybe age 4 to age 8, now it is pretty rare, maybe because some condition i had isnt as much pregnant today)

I used to hear my heart beats when i layed my ear on the pillow this would make a rythmic noise sounding much like a metronome at maybe 80 bpm, but with a much deeper noise (think wood planks colliding underwater). This nosie would remind me of an army walking together, but one night i was dreaming and i was going in the basement (which was dark and scary) when i started hearing the heart beats, it turned out there was an army of wolves coming out of a small crack in a door leading to a crawl space under the stairs. Since then, i would expect to see wolves evrytime i heard that heartbeat noise... much like a classical conditionning, the dogs hears a signal, and he knows he gets food when he hears that special signal, so he salivates.

In classical conditionning there are Inconditionnal and conditionnal stimulus and responses, so in the wolves example, my heart beat was an inconditionnal stimulus, which lead to the incontidionnal response of wondering what is this noise. Since i had previously associated the noise with "army", then my expectation would be that some sort of army would pop up in my dream, but you must combine this with the fact i was going into that scary basement, so this army had to be scary in some way.

When i saw the wolves, the heart beat nosie was associated with the animals, the animals associated with the basement, and in some way, i guess the soud of the heartbeats were associated with goign to the basement because everytime i would hear those in my dreams, i would KNOW that i couldnt do anything, that my body would naturally move down to the basement and that in the basement, there was something scary (but i would never know those were the wolves, atleast not until much later, maybe when i was eight i was getting the hang of it, but those nightmares were getting pretty rare because i would hear my heart beating in my hears anymore). So basically, the dream would turn into a nightmare from the point were i would hear my the "marching sound" and i would inevitably end in that basement surrounded by the wolves, until i start feeling them bitting trhough my skin and i wake up.

Im sorry if im rambling, but lets see the whole thing in a small sheme

      inconditionnal stimulus = heartbeat
inconditionnal response = trying to find the source

'source of the sound - basement' association
'fear - basement' association (done in waking life, as most kids fear dark basements)

conditionnal stimulus = heartbeat (the heartbeat has been associated with a response)
conditionned response = fear (because trying to find the source of this sound means going into the basements and theres scary stuff in there)

      --------------

Now, if you want this to happen in your dreams, since you probably can dream lucidly, you simply have to build expectations. I had a good one recently... this dream was non lucid in the beginning and went from semi lucid, to almost completely lucid, then back to non lucid (or maybe i was just freaking scared).

In the start i would see two men with a mustache (1930 style of something) on a photograph, standing on a sidewalk, and a narrator was saying these two mans were criminals who passed them selves as street entertainers.

some parents and kids appeared around the two man, there were attracted by the entertainers and wanted to see their tricks... suddenly, those parents disappeared and the view change to a big house with no doors and no windows (seen from outside), with greenish wall (as if those were biege walls that were really dirty) and the house was surrounded by an opaque fence, very high fence, maybe 10 feet. The kids were running to the house, that waas a game set by the entertainers. Then, i was in that house, it was dark and moist, and i had to find the kids and the parents.

At this point i was aware that i was in bed and that this was a dream among a chain of them i was having this morning, but still, i wanted to complete this task of finding the lsot children and parents. I as exploring the house, then i saw a large door, maybe twice a large as a normal one, and i my mind, i told my self "thats it, the two entertainers killed all the chldrens and their parents in this house and stored the bodies in there" I wasnt scaredbecause i knew i was dreaming, but when i openend the door, it went from darkness to evil darkness, i could feel vibes comming out of that room. i went in and i lost lucidity and this was hell of a nightmare from this point, but i was so scared i went out of it pretty quick and i woke up.
