Islam & Dreams and Sleep (#1)

Dreams in Islam is a big subject and if I want to talk about it then I'm going to every thing then it's going to talk a lot of time and effort, that's why I've decided to talk about it in different threads and I'll take one subject at a time.



What happens when you sleep?


(Verse from The Quran)

[ ٱللَّهُ يَتَوَفَّى ٱلۡأَنفُسَ حِينَ مَوۡتِهَا وَٱلَّتِى لَمۡ تَمُتۡ فِى مَنَامِهَاۖ فَيُمۡسِكُ ٱلَّتِى قَضَىٰ عَلَيۡہَا ٱلۡمَوۡتَ وَيُرۡسِلُ ٱلۡأُخۡرَىٰٓ إِلَىٰٓ أَجَلٍ۬ مُّسَمًّىۚ إِنَّ فِى ذَٲلِكَ لَأَيَـٰتٍ۬ لِّقَوۡمٍ۬ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ]

(translation):

(42. It is Allah Who takes away the souls at the time of their death, and those that die not during their sleep. He keeps those (souls) for which He has ordained death and sends the rest for a term appointed. Verily, in this are signs for a people who think deeply.)

(What does it mean?)

It means that when people die, Allah takes their souls and the same thing happens when people go to sleep and they meet and they talk to each other, and when then Allah sends back the souls of the livings and keeps the souls of the deads.

Which is why I'm leaving it here. This is about dreaming, flaming should warrant a ban.

Yea, I for one am very interested and I'm not religious in the least. But I would like to know just about what the Quran says about dreaming, without having to read it myself :tongue: In fact I'd like to know what every 'main' religion thinks dreaming is, without having to drudge through debates about religion or long texts about religion hahaha

Regardless of your religion i think the point to be had he is thus:

That some prophet a long time ago said that:

The place we go when we dream is the same place we go when we die.

Compare this to what Jung said abou the deepest and darkest levels of the shadow. The 'Collective unconcious.'

For ****s sake people just ignore religious overtones anymore. A book of wisdom is just that. Who really gives a rats @$$ what religion it is or what some fantatical militant whack job wants to tell you about the people that study the teachings of whatever book sources that wisdom or what the fanatical militant whack jobs wants to tell you about people who DON'T follow it.

They're called opinions. Everyone has them.. Get over your EGOs already. You will waste away into pathetic and miserable fear in hell created by someone elses dream because you can't wake up and think for yourselves.

OP - Thank you for this extremely vasluble reference which is extremely relevant to the topic at hand. We may have otherwise stroked our egos and loved our predjuices had you not pointed out this wonderful metaphor written by a wise man long ago.

It very interesting to notice parallels in the metaphors of religious writings. I guess some metaphors help people conceptualize spirituality and dreams better than others. Whatever floats your boat as they say.

When I was young I was asked what I thought would happen when you died. My answer was that when you die you dream forever. If you were good in life you went to "heaven" because you dreamed good thoughts. If you were bad in life you would have things weighing on your mind that would cause stressful dreams or nightmares. That would be "hell".

Jewish tradition has similar ideas, that the soul is taken away during sleep, and that sleep is 1/60th of death.

Yes, according to the Talmud in Berachot 57b, it is 1/60, a number that appears in other places, it is a borderline in kashrut (dietary laws) of taste, and describes many other things.

The number has its mystical significance based in the Zohar (a main book of Kabbalah) regarding dreaming specifically, where the Zohar states that there are six levels, each with sub-levels. Dreaming has its source on the level of ratzon, will, because it is the world of freewill.

This thread is about Dreaming in relation to Islam, not my personal beliefs regarding Judaism or fairy tales. The OP mentioned an Islamic take on sleep and dreaming, I thought I could add to the discussion by mentioning a similar concept from a similar religion, nothing more.

I don't believe he said he believed it. Besides mythology (i.e. 'fairy tales') are often metaphorical analogies to an observation. In fact, all words are just such analogies to actuality. Anything written or spoken is inherently false because it uses words which are just representations of something and not the actual thing it self. That's why it is a DE-SCRIPT-tion. You have to read between the lines to understand so to speak.

Sorry for the DP Dexter is used to a forum that automerges double posts. He will try to be more conscious of this in the future.

I have not read the Quran, but this reflects my current opinion, though I'm not sure what definition of Allah would match my view.

Hi there

It's so strange to find this site ... when I was at varsity I participated in a study where they were interviewing lucid dreamers. I thought I was abnormal before then. I must have collected many many dream journals over the years since then.

Anyhow ... there I go again ... i see a reference to kabbalah here and I watched a powerful video on it recently - insightful but also cleverly done! The linked sites make comments about zohar and dreaming and stuff.
