Where does the dreamscape come from

Is there a specific part of the brain that creates the dream worlds we interact with? A great deal of this site is dedicated to exploring our dreams, but not much about what builds them.

There is a lot of speculation about what builds our dreams. One of my favorite explanations comes from Stephen LaBerges "Exploring The World of Lucid Dreaming," where he discusses "schemas". Rather than recapping it in detail here, you might check out the book.

The basic idea is that our brains build models that we use as our reality - models that are constantly updated based on sensory input. In the absence of sensory input, these "schemas" become activated for one reason or another and become our dreamscapes.

That is just one explanation, of course. I'm not saying I entirely buy it... but it is an elegant way of looking at things.
