It's easier if you wake up multiple times during the night in my experience. I set my alarm 4.5 hours I fall asleep, 6 hours (for possible WBTB), 7.5 hours, and then the final wake up time (which hopefully is 8 hours or more ha). Sometimes you will be woken up from a dream by your alarm which makes it easier to remember... but it seems just in general I remember my dreams better this way. There were nights sleeping all the way that I would wake up anyway without alarms and remember dreams, but I would rarely remember any more than one (sometimes none) if I slept all the way through. Ever since I have been doing this I have been waking up often about 2.5-3.5 hours after going to sleep and remembering a dream (2nd REM cycle). For me it's like training the mind to wake up during REM sleep.
