Why do people think LD is bad?

My mother and I had an argument this morning about my new favorite hobby lucid dreaming. Mom keeps telling me that its not real, as if I am delusional. I keep trying to tell mom that I dont care if its real or not, that I just care about the experience. Mom of course thinks this is dumb and the begining of delusional thinking. Mom keeps saying its not real, "If I dream that I am rich I wont wake up rich." is her favorite. Mom just doesnt get why I do it. I feel like i am the only one who does. I still remember telling some stranger i met at school about it. She was a teacher and of course she was concerned if i was taking "stuff" for it. Why do people think lucid dreaming is harmful and why dont they understand doing something for the expereince reguardless of if its real or not? Its like people automatically think anything outside of the "norm" is bad and "aught not to be done." Mom I told mom that other people do it to and she just said that anyone who would put effort into a "not real" dream needs help. I guess ill just keep doing as usual because I have actually done it and know i am not delusional.

One question: Is your mom religious?

If you can see the difference between reality and a dream, then there's nothing wrong with it. Might as well be saying that just liking a normal dream is bad and delusional because it's not real.
I suppose religion can come into why people think it's bad, as lucid dreaming can give god like abilities to people while dreaming. Another reason why people might think it's bad is because they've never done it or don't understand it, people fear the unknown and what they don't understand.

I have similar issues. my mom has nightmares almost every single night, and it puts her in a bad mood for the whole entire day. i've told her about lucid dreaming and have been trying to get her to try it, and she won't. when i first told her about it, whenever i talked about it around her, she would tell me to "be careful". she's religious but so am i, i guess she thinks it's occult related or something. also my best friend keeps telling me it's "girly" to lucid dream. "girls talk about dreams, guys talk about guy stuff" is one of the phrases he says often when i bring it up around him.

Your right. That and people just like to play video games instead because it is easyer. To me LDing is like a video game only its harder to log in and harder to learn. Also its better. To me tho it seems like alot of people especially "proffessionals" think that temporarally escapeing reality is "delusional." Tho it might concern people like mom because I like it more than food and almost more then life.

Some people don't appreciate creativity and imagination. And some simply just don't understand the benefits of lucid dreaming, because they are unfamiliar with it and are too quick to judge what they believe it is. They're too grounded into the real world to realize that there's something else out there, practically right under their noses.

yeah, just like if i told my dad he would be like YOU ARE TO MUCH IN A FANTASY WORLD!!! Too much video games, to much fantasy books! WATCH THE NEWS OR read non-fiction books, OR DO MATH!! MATH??? MATH???????

my mom doesn't believe its true, but she's fine with it. If its that big of a deal then its best not to talk to her about it and just, well, dream on!

She's probably had an LD before, but just didn't remember having it. :P

yeah, not like anyone can stop you, the only way to stop you is to kill you or keep you from sleeping. the only thing anyone can really do is keep you from using lucid aids. i think this is the reason lucid dreaming is kind of an underground thing. too many people pass it off as occult-related or girly or sleep-depriving or even non-existant and don't bother researching it or passing it on. i say it's their loss. if they are too ignorant to look into one of the most amazing things the human race is capable of, then they don't have to have it.

Back in the day, when we had a real sociology class, lucid dreaming was a topic for a week, we learned about old science and how it had developed into real science. Now you get Head happy people who just want to throw numbers at you, rinse repeat, and make sure to show your diploma to wall mart.

She doesn't believe it's real? did you show her DV? Cause if its fake then theres thousands of delusional people here.

Also mom fears i might not enter sleep paralisis in a LD and kill someone thinking its a monster. And thats why I LD with my door closed and the only means outa my room in a LD is to phase or teleport.
Parrents cant take away lucid aid stuff becuase i only use my mind.

I think the problem here is that your mom is being uptight and unreasonable, but you seem to take her opinion very seriously. Tell her you have an imagination and are adventurous, but instead of watching movies or drawing, you lucid dream. If you wanted, you could even have her sign up on Dreamviews and talk to me - I'd be happy to discuss it with her, if she's willing to open her mind a bit. It's perfectly fine if you don't though.

You can become delusional by doing a lot of different things, not just LDing. Then, let it go. End the conversation by telling her to look up Dreamviews, show her people's comments related to this, and finish by saying something along the lines of, "forty years from now, when I have a family and haven't killed anyone, you'll realize that lucid dreaming is perfectly fine".

Thats reasonable. maybe i shouldent take others opinions serriously.. Mom just sees no point in that and i should just respect that. She is just one of those people that if a subject doesnt improve things like getting her a job or getting rid of back problems that it isnt something important.

If you do get too involved with other peoples' opinions, it can really make you unhappy, especially if said person's ideals or emotions clash with your own. Sometimes you just have to accept their opinion, and your own, and be indifferent about it. :) Maybe she'll warm up to lucid dreaming eventually, who knows!

Sounds like we should ban all items relating to the fictional. Video games, movies, literature, Fox News - it's all not real, and so it should be thrown into a cleansing inferno of reality. All those who enjoy these things should be institutionalized or, better yet, imprisoned.

As to the originator of the Fiction Inquisition... How much television does your mother watch? How often does she read fiction? We need to know, because the Inquisitors can't decide whether she is getting a slap on the wrist or the electric chair.

Anyway, you don't need to care what she thinks. She can't stop you from dreaming.

If mom thought it was witch craft I would do everything I could to either change her mind or bug her about it. Then I would pretend to do other witchcraft things and make up chants.

Parents are just ignorant in general, they don't care what kids have to say and they certainly wont accept new ideas that they've never heard of from a kid. Just say fine Mom I don't mind that you don't take any interest in any of my hobbies and just shoot them down, your a great Mom. It works I've done it ;)

I talked to my parents for non stop about lucid dreaming for 3 weeks straight, I told them everything there was to know about it. Guess what my mom says at the end of the 3 weeks? Derrick what's a lucid dream? I don't quite understand...

Yes something about being a parent messes up your mind, maybe its the years of having every screw-assed thing you say be believed like it is a proven fact and you get to lay down rules crazier and more absolute than any mad dictator could ever hope too! Also I'm sure it is hard to give someone full respect after you've had to teach them how NOT to poop their pants. Anything that comes out of your mouth now is competing with all the stupid things you have ever done, their parents do the same thing. In fact you could get your grand parents to tell you "silly stories" of your parents, away from your parent of course or they'll put an end to if they can. Then you'd get a great insight into what your parents are really like. You don't know your parent till you see them as the little kids they were!

They are not religious but people truly fear LDing. Some people are so scared of "tampering" with their minds.
"Its not natural!" goes the argument and I'll say "but then neither is wiping your ass with scented toilet paper, so why don't you stop being a hypocrite and do it the natural way with your bare hands, I mean because natural is the only thing for you right?"lol
This is where they start searching for a smart comeback then I say,
"You know what else isn't natural reading or doing math! But you see I'm not a caveman, I need to harness the power of my mind and not let it run crazy over my life so I can be a fully functioning and civilized member of the world."

Actually considering how much our minds are needed, more in more, in our fast passed technological world, it is a huge wonder how few do anything to improve their minds and still function at all!

I just keep lucid dreaming VERY VERY secret. I mean, REALLY secret. I write my DJs in a cipher and encrypt them with RSA when I type them into the computer. Seriously. Not because my parents will think it's bad, but it's so strange to many people. Oh I guess that won't be a big deal, since everybody knows I'm a strange geek who is obsessed with computers and science. I'll explain everything after I finish Lucid Dream Markup Language.

I have a great idea. You can wait until your school has a science fair or something like that and then you do a presentation on lucid dreaming. That'll clear things up and give you enough uninterrupted time to make your parents listen :)

Why would anyone be embarrassed about lucid dreaming that is literally just stupid. Something as small as this shouldn't have to be hidden get over your embarrassment everyone, I've told everyone I know no one has thought I was weird because of it. All you have to do is explain it they are either interested or not interested. Which you will find out the first time they talk to you or if they never talk about it again.

Well some people cant handle the idea of creepy weird experiences. I still am a little creeped out, but when i enter a lucid dream i feel differently.

My youngest brother told my mom that, and she believed him, what made it worse is that my mom is very religious.
Eventually she found the paper I had printed out on Lucid Dreaming read it and got a better understanding but still doesn't like it.

i agree, parents don't listen alot of times. it's like they can't except the fact that their kid might know something they don't.

It drives me crazy when people think lucid dreaming is delusional. By definition, It is the exact OPPOSITE. You are training yourself to be able to tell the difference between reality and dreams. By doing this, you learn to recognize and appreciate the differences between the two states. Most lucid dreaming practices teach you to be more aware in your everyday life. This creates a richer and more enjoyable life, even without the dreaming component.

My parents don't understand it either. But then again, parents aren't really supported of anything their kids like.

I see a common theme of bad parenting here :P

lol. I cant believe that its 2011 and people still are superstisiouse and believe in witchcraft. What some don't get is that "witchcraft" is just the product of a strong mind effecting its own reality. I believe that it is just a cover up for things we don't yet understand.

I pretty much get the same response from my mom. It used to frustrate me really bad, because she kept telling me I was crazy, basically. I stopped talking to her about in months ago. If I'm crazy, then I guess all lucid dreamers are as well. I'm just gonna keep it up, I don't see a reason not to. It's fun and insightful, and those who don't understand it just don't understand it. Just like we don't understand why they think it's "bad". No use in arguing over it.

By now I've probably told at least twenty people about my LDing.
I actually just finished running in school elections and I had distributed brochures that had a small, slightly-detailed section called "I lucid dream". Everyone was fascinated; I didn't see anyone who thought it was weird or stupid. Younger people are more open to it, I think.

Question: Why do (some) people think LD is bad?

Possible answers:

1.) Some people don't know what lucid dreaming actually is, a.k.a they are not educated on the subject.
2.) Some people have certain religious beliefs that make them think meditation is bad, or yoga for instance, or in this case lucid dreaming.
3.) Some people believe too much lucid dreaming can cause problems distinguishing dreams from reality.
4.) Some people are just stooopid. :D

Ditto. The only thing that is different is that your spending un-used time to enhance and use your brain more. The only real risk, and a slight one at that, would be if you thought that reality and dreaming were switched. You would probably have to be cracked from the beginning for that to happen though :P

I do have LDing friends.

By the way, I am getting bunches of F/NLs and F/NRCs on my dream journal. (In case you wonder what those mean, it is part of Lucid Dream Markup Language. F/NL means Failed/NoLucidity and F/NRC means Failed/NoRecalledDreams)

My mother doesn't deny lucid dreaming, anyone who does is just being idiotic and needs to get over themselves. But she does seem to consider anything creative to be useless sometimes... not painting, or playing an instrument. But impractical novelty things. For example, we watched an amazing video of a sheep-herder who would control a few hundred sheep to move in various positions which from a far-away birds eye view would look like an animation (as if each of the sheep was a pixel on a screen). Rather than see the amazing effort, work, and skill this would take, she just said "well clearly they have lots of time on there hands". GRASFASFD. Its not about that, the ability to be impractical and creative is one of the few things that make us human.

Well from my observations i have noticed the same. Some people just dont apreciate things just for the sake of being able to do it or fun.

Some people are just silly and don't understand or care... Speaking of religion, I've had a (Christian) person tell me lucid dreaming is wrong and not natural, all I could do was laugh. I'm not trying to disparage religion but sometimes people think if it isn't specifically accounted for in their holy book, it's wrong. These are usually the same people who think meditation itself is evil just because it's a part of many occult activities. Newsflash, so is breathing. But I digress. I don't get why people are so against or scared of things they don't understand. Lucid dreaming is pointless, they say. Even so, what do you have to lose? You're dreaming while you're asleep so it's not like you're wasting time, why not make it interesting?

I say as long as you have a firm grip on reality while awake, no harm done. And I've never had a lucid dream affect my reality other than increase my interest in dreams and how the mind works. However I have had a non-lucid dream screw up my entire day because it was disturbing to me and I couldn't get the idea out of my head, so if any dreams are evil non-lucid ones are. ;)

Thats all there is to it. Ignore dumbasses. Lucid dreaming is incredibly amazing. Why are they like that? I don't know... they don't even think straight. They don't have clarity. all clogged up with crap that can't let them see the awesomemness of lucid dreaming.

I know what she would say. "Why would you wanna do that anyway, it snot real." I have given up trying to tell her my "irrational" idea that I do things simply becuause i can and for the experince.

By the way Ryokrt3 I did a random RC last week and my dad screamed at me that i wasnt dreaming. I was dreaming and i ignored him. So people do RCs in thire dream is they do it at random in real life. The key is to do it at random and not at set times. like one day i do a RC 2 times the next 17. It is random and it increases chances of a random RC being in a dream.
