Question Lack of Senses in Dreams

I find that when I dream I rarely experience more than the sensations of sight and touch. I can recall only one time when I heard sound during a dream, and I've never smelled or tasted. I find that though people in my dream are talking to me, I'm not actually hearing what they are saying; it's as if they are relaying their message to me telepathically.

Is this common in dreams? Has anyone else had similar experiences? Do more senses come as one develops their dream recall/lucid dreaming ability?

I've heard of people who don't hear sound in dreams. Thankfully, I am not one of them. I feel that in time, if you progress through lucid dreaming, more senses will develop. I've developed a sense of taste and smell (which can be very strong) and can also feel hot and cold sometimes. It just comes in time.
I don't know if you could force a sense to develop... maybe imagine there is a button in front of you that can control sound, and unmute your dream. It may sound silly, but you'd be surprised how stuff like that works.

I ushually hear alot of things in my dream aspecially if it's outside my dream like once my dad came into my room (when I was dreaming) and I could hear the window opening (its an old apartment from like the 60's so the window's are loud when they open, but they don't wake me up). And it was atchually opened when I woke up. I like these dreams.

Sounds are usually very faint or I just "think" them.
A couple of times I had a lucid dream where everything sounded real and at the correct volume with 3d positions, although they were sounds I was already familiar with. I guess it depends partially on how vivid and strong the dream is to begin with.

Sounds in my dreams are vivid, and when people speak to me, it's as if they're actually speaking and mouthing the words. From reading the posts in this forum, it obviously differs between people. Like Loaf said, perhaps it just comes from practice and experience from being dreams.

Your expectations are also very powerful; if you eat some cake and expect it to taste like chocolate, it probably will. From my own experiences, mindlessly doing stuff in a dream produces little result. Maybe you can try summoning a DC, then expect them to say "chicken" or something, also expecting to hear the sound.

(I'm hungry right now, hence the food examples).
We all live in a kind of continuous dream. When we wake, it is because something,
some event, some pinprick even, disturbs the edges of what we have taken as reality.

Now that you mention it, while I can remember communicating with people, I don't have any distinct memory of having heard sound in dreams.

Dreams tend to be silent other than communication with other people. Using expectations, maybe believe that music will start playing or something. Expect to hear wind, or thunder.

I can't explain how the sensory input works with my dreams. People speak in my dreams, and I understand their voice.. but when I wake up I feel as though I haven't 'heard' anything. I guess its the same as when you say that its like they are relaying their message telepathically... that seems about right for me as well.

I guess i also hear things in the background... but again, its more telepathic then it is an actual sound. For instance, at my house in palm desert, there is a glass table on the patio. My mom dropped it and it shattered while I was sleeping. In my dream, i had a dream that I was falling, and when the 'crash' happened I hit bottom and jolted awake. But when I woke up, I hadn't remembered 'hearing' the crash... i just 'felt' the crash when I hit bottom.

But for some reason... i can still barely ever recognize I'm in a dream... everything feels so real, even if what is happening is absurd. Plus, the few times I have realized I was dreaming, I could never really lucid dream. I would realize I was dreaming, try to 'open my eyes' and when they opened I would pop into another dream and think that was reality.
(sorry that last little part is kinda a rant about my lucid dreaming haha)

Ah no sound in dream. Before I tried lucid dreaming I had sound in my dreams but it was different. I could hear what they were saying and what noises were going on and such but I could never really tell what direction they were coming from and it was more like the noises were in my head. Like I was thinking of the noises instead of actually hearing them. Now thats solved but idk what caused it in the first place.

Last night in a dream I was sitting with 4 of my friends talking, and I woke up right from this dream. While I was lying still in my bed, remembering the dream to put in my journal, I could distinctly recall the sound of my friends' voices. So I'm sure sound and speech is possible.

On second thought, I also once dreamed of a guy who spoke with a Hindu accent. This should also be an indication that sound is there, at least some times.
