      Blacking Out

Um, I never paid any real thought to this. But for a few yrs. now, whenever I get up from laying down or even sitting down (in a relaxed position), my eyes completely black out. It's really random for how long they black out, sometimes it's only a few secs.; sometimes it's more than that. Even if I've laid down for only a couple of minutes, it nearly always happens.

I can remember a couple of instances in my life where it was for an extended period of time. Once, I wasn't feeling very well (had some kind of stomachache) and I felt like I was going to vomit. I was at the sink, but I couldn't vomit, just felt nausea. Well, my head was sort of bent down toward the sink, and when I lifted my head I blacked out. I remember going a bit crazy as I stayed blacked out, and running around for a few mins. (I was young, and panicked ) I went and laid down, then regained my vision slowly.

I remember looking this up online. I read somewhere it wasn't anything to be worried about and was related to low blood pressure. My parents said it wasn't anything to be worried about as well, but both sources aren't much reliable. Oh, and I can't go to a doctor or anything. (parents)

So yeah, is this normal? Something to be worried about?

Well the first thing I come up with is low bloodpressure, the thing you already figured out I have the same deal, if I have been sitting and rise too quickly I feel dizzy and my sight goes black or blurry. You could try to rise up more slowly and take deep breath before you rise.

If it is the bloodpressure there is nothing dangerous really, some people just have it like that

You made this thread because of what I said didn't you?

I heard it has to do with low blood sugar, and eating something should usually help.

Sounds like orthostatic hypotension. Do you drink a lot of caffeine or alcohol? Stop both and replace them with gatorade or something else that's high in various salts. You should consult your doctor for advice.

Yeh well my mother is a diabetic and I have a great chance to become one too so we do have low blood sugar AND low bloodpressure. Great combo
Not actually sure which one affects more, but eating surely helps since it raises your blood's sugar.

Firstly, thanks a lot for the advice Unelias. I'll try rising slowly and taking a deep breath.

I do not drink any caffeine or alcohol whatsoever.

Hurm. My mom has sugar problems and my dad has blood pressure problems, but as far as I (and doctor) know, I don't. So it has to do with low blood sugar as well? Hmm..

hmm.. well they both can cause nausea and dizzyness. When you relax then rise up quickly your brain doesn't get oxygen that fast, which can result minor dizzyness or lack of seeing for a brief time. In extreme cases total blackout and brief unconsciousness.

Hypoglygemia, or low bloodsugar usually indicates diabetes, but of course if you haven't eaten for a while your blood sugar amount is low. It can lead to same symptoms.

Hey, but don't worry! Low blood pressure is generally a good thing since it has been noted to give a more healthier life than high, since it keeps your bloodvessels in a lot better shape

On a sidenote : how old are you? The symptoms you told are very frequent on teenagers and are closely associated with growing up.

I think Ninja is right about this being just a headrush, it happens to me frequently and I have a healthy diet. Of course mine doesn't last minutes, more like 30 seconds.

Edit: Zhaylin is right too (sorry missed your post). It's not vertigo, it's totally different.
