I didn't know about Simon Wilkinson. He's awesome. I have a new space musician to get really into.
I'd love to see how a composer works in such long projects. 10 hours of music must be quite a feat, or is it more simple than I think?
Also, thanks you guys for taking the time to post these, I'm really enjoying what I'm hearing so far :)
This was a thing last year:
Band creates the 'most relaxing tune ever' - Telegraph
Kinda funny little study. I checked out all the songs that were considered and most of them I would consider to be upbeat, but I gotta admit the winner was a heavyweight. Marconi Union. I listened to quite a few more of their tracks and I really dig them now as an ambient group.
Marconi Union - Weightless - YouTube
It reminded me of this:
Portal Soundtrack - Self Esteem Fund - YouTube
I have tried hard to get to the bottom of the story on that music. Apparently some guy named Austin Sistrunk posts his music on YouTube but doesn't have any CD's or MP3's I can find anywhere. His name doesn't show up on Amazon or Google, aside from links to his YouTube videos. The song is repetitive, so I think he used some kind of looping. It pretty much does the same thing over and over for 10 hours. I still love it. He also posted 10 hours of rain sounds, and he has a composition that combines the space composition with the rain sounds.
That is incredible. I just posted it and the article on Facebook.
Albums I listen to while falling asleep (some named in previous posts)...
Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works Vol. 2
Bark Psychosis - Hex/Code: Dustsucker
Boards of Canada - Geogaddi
Coil - Time Machines
Gas - Pop
Global Communication - 76:14 (was going to link to this one but I can't yet)
The Orb - The Orb's Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld
Oval - 94diskont
Sigur Rós - Ágćtis Byrjun
Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden/Laughing Stock
Tangerine Dream - Phaedra
William Basinski - The Disintegration Loops
Some stuff by Eno (especially Ambient 4 On Land!)
love phaedra. i even refer to the driving force of my subconscious as phaedra.. and she is helping me see through dreams and pulls me into lucid ones :)
*would also like to add this great album. not full ambient, its mixed with the distant melancholic sorrows which make up the black metal scream, while maintaining ambience.
ive posted this before and here it is again.

I found another good one by them a few days ago.

Good stuff indeed. I like this one too:
Marconi Union - A Shower of Sparks (better sound) - YouTube
Really glad this thread is still up and running, you've all had some great finds here!
Here's something fairly rare, but I love how it integrates with acoustics later on:

Another very rare one:
Ansiform Composition III - YouTube
I have so many Ansiform tracks, they used to be available for free all on this site I Stumbleupon'd to one day. Haven't been able to find it all again.
Biosphere does it well, so do these guys-- capture that cold, wintery, desolate mood. I listened to this once on a bright sunny day in the middle of nowhere, nothing around me but snow. Was like a white room that had sensory deprivation. The experience was beautiful, and I think this music really captures that "cold beauty" aesthetic.

The rest of the album is this with dub techno elements, which I really dig.
