      Thrash Metal

I'm not a *huge* metalhead, but I really enjoy thrash metal. Whos your favorite Big 4 band and who else would you recommend (Personally, I can't decide between megadeth and Metallica)
And now.. for a Stephen Strutmeyer Film...

do yourself a favor and buy 'samus octology' by irepress. my best friend is a huge metalhead and we've exchanged A LOT of music and gone to many concerts, and we both agree that this one's at the top of our list. he's a big metallica fan and now is pretty into deathmetal related things... but over the years i've gotten sick of hearing vocals altogether, and irepress is instrumental (they also have a newer album which is good too).

these aren't technically thrash, but opeth is good - i've only heard them live though. dysrhythmia is like instrumental post prog metal, whatever that is ('no interference' is their best). bass in thrash metal is either inaudible or too lame to me so i seek out other niches!

Obviously never listened to Megadeth. Most of the basslines from when David Ellefson was with the band were simply golden. (LoMenzo, I'm afraid, is quite lame...) I might get a "-1" in someone's book for saying this, but Dave Ellefson > Cliff Burton.

Anyway, I've recently convinced myself that not only is Megadeth my favorite thrash metal band, but my favorite band of all time. I love the outstanding range of diverse sounds that can be found throughout their discography, but one thing that never changes is the gritty, badass, raging, evil-sounding, adrenaline-pumping, insanity-inducing intensity that is the very spirit of Megadeth.

Seriously? They opened for metallica... it was freaking terrible. I can deal with screaming vocals, but only if the guitar sings of you. There wasn't ANYTHING good about lamb of god. Further more they aren't even THRASH or anything CLOSE! (Also, Megadeth FTW!)

Yeah, whoever said Megadeth was right on the money. Try songs like "Peace Sells"

If you're looking for an insane bassist, listen to Dream theater (although they're more Progressive). 6-string bass and 7-string guitar, paired with Mike Portnoy on his monster drum kit, vocals, and a keyboard. It's pretty insane.

If you like Dream Theater you should definitely check out Porcupine Tree. They are pretty much legendary in the world of modern progressive music, and Steven Wilson is a true creative mastermind.

porcupine tree is friggin amazing - one of the best bands i've seen live... after listening to them i completely lost interest in DT - which then sounded too over the top and self-serving, but whatever haha. i would recommend the album 'fear of a blank planet'... or check out older recordings like 'signify.'

older Mastodon is good too, if you want some heavier stuff.

I like Testament and Anthrax. Megadeath to, especially its Head Crusher and 1,320

Funny how Megadeth get mentioned a lot in this thread - I always though tthey were underrated - but I've always liked them more than Metallica - and think that Megadeths records sounds better than ever when I hear them today. Just had a great Megadeth-revival during my everyday car-rides! (Been on it for 3 months now) the "Rust in Peace" record especially is just pure greatnes!

I also like Slayer, and had a passion for Anthrax back in the days - but I don't think they hold out as great as the other Slayer or Megadeth. Metallica had a great 3 record-run but have let me down again and again since "And Justice for All" that one included.

I didn't listen to metal for 10 years or so, thought I was to grown up - but as i said recently I've really been taking the genre up again - but would like to add some new bands to the list. Anybody have any recommendations?

Megadeth is thrash? I always thought of them as plain rock, maybe hard rock.

Slayer and Metallica are the kings of thrash.

Skeletonwitch = amazing band. It's blackened thrash. Witchery is good too. (What's with thrash bands and witches?)

Yeah, Megadeth started out thrash, but by the time 'Youthanasia' came around they softened out. Try listening to 'Killing is my Business' or 'Peace Sells'

They used to play "Peace Sells" and their version of "Anarchy in the U.K." on MTV's Headbanger's Ball a lot. I also used to own the albums Peace Sells But Who's Buying and So Far, So Good... So What? and I heard them play "In My Darkest Hour" in the movie The Decline of Western Civilization II: The Metal Years, which I saw several times. It's good music, but I just never thought it was that heavy, at least not compared to the music of Slayer and early Metallica.
      You are dreaming right now.

I was never really into Megadeth, but I'm a fan of Metallica

Oh, and on the note of Prog rock/metal, try Liquid Tension Experiment, it's a John Pertucci/Mike Portnoy side project.

I used to be a big thrash fan, but now I'm into prog and fusion. Liquid Tension Experiment is pretty awesome.

My favorite metal bands now are Symphony X, Xerath, Cynic, Opeth, and Ayreon. I also looove Porcupine Tree.

I have now listened to a couple of the bands listed - There are some very interesting music among those! I don't like growling singers (hmm can those two words even be listed in the same sentence?), but a band like Opeth just have so much more to offer than a bit of growling, maybe I can grow accustomed to it... I like almost every form of metal, but when the growling sets in i'm usually offput.

I haven't heard of any of the se bands before - maybe its because I live in Denmark... though with the invention of internet I probably won't be able to use that excuse anymore...

Keep those names coming, I'm really enjoying listening to some good metal again...

PS. Also impressed with Porcupine Tree, initially they remind me a bit of Pearl jam in their less aggressive mood. (always been a big PJ-fan)

Dude, that's like the best part of vocals in thrash metal...or any kind of metal, really. It's a part of what gives metal its gruffness.

I don't think we define growling the same way then

eg. I like Arya from Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth, Testament, Death Angel, Rammstein and so on and on amongst many other great rough, "dirty" vocals - but when it comes to animal-esque growling like Obituary and the way that guy in Opeth growls (I can't mention so many others by name, because as I said its downright offputting to me.)

But growling to me, is much different than the first bands that I mentioned, does that make sense
