Movies that screw your brain

Some people like movies that make you laugh. Others like the ones that make you think. Others like the movies that get the adrenaline pumping. All of these are undeniably great. But my absolute favorrrrite kinds of movies are the ones that make your brains shatter into so many pieces that you need the rest of the evening to reassemble it. You know what I'm talking about, stuff by those directors that are out to mindfuck.

Doesn't matter what genre, as long as it hits my mind hard. Whether its out there from a plot-oriented or a creativity standpoint doesn't matter. I'm sure there's many people on DV who share these sentiments, so lets get some lists and recommendations going! I was never much of a movie buff before now so my knowledge is limited, but I'll get the ball rolling.

A few old favorites:
City of Lost Children
Fear and Loathing in LV
A Clockwork Orange
The Science of Sleep
Fantastic Planet
Brazil
Delicatessen

I like the DV favorites too, generally anything that deals with sleep or dreams is pretty interesting:
Waking Life

The Matrix

I've been told I should check out David Lynch...but where to start? Everything looks good. :D

Also, Pan's Labyrinth. And Bowie's Labyrinth. For very different reasons.

Silence of the Lambs is pretty... :shudders: good at giving you something to think about.

'a scanner darkly' was pretty nuts. and it was visually.. confusing at times haha, in a good way.

OMG Across the Universe... the story isn't a mindfuck but the way the director presents it is.... i watched it once sober and it psyched me out, then i watch it high on weed and adoral (back in my partying days) and i still to this day am creeped out by that fucking movie...

Fantastic Planet... that's a Rene Lalloux (spelling) stop animation film, right?

Stephen King's The Stand is a very good book/movie that really gets you thinking about humans, when they revert to their primal form. There's a lot of good sociological theory in it (in fact, there's a character in there that I believe was included for that reason).

The book is anywhere from 400-600 pages for the edited, 800-1100 for the original and uncut (depending on height of the book and text size, obviously) and the movie is 4 parts, each an hour and a half to two hours long. But if you have the time, I recommend picking up one or the other.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is fantastic in this respect; one of those movies you have to watch twice to get to grips with.

The Others really crashed my brain.

Start with Mulholland Dr. ( I also recommended it in 'The last movie you saw...' thread.) I won't say a thing except - it's a 'must see', and makes you appreciate cinematography much more!

Oh, and for David Lynch, watch 'Mulholland Drive' or 'Lost Highway' first. Either order is fine.

While it's not a movie, Chaos;Head is a mind fuck. It's definintly not intented for younger audiences, as it has some very distrubing writings.

It's a visual novel about this guy (you) that witnesses a murder and all these weird things start to unravel. It's a sci-fi/mindfuck kind of thing.

I was going to mention both The Begotten and Eraserhead, but Carou beat me to it. I'd go with Elephant. Not really a mind fuck, but I was really high/really tired when I watched it so it ended up being pretty weird. Also The Machinist, that's pretty trippy.

I'll second a lot of the recommendations above and add Brain Storm, from the early '80s and starring Christopher Walken. It starts off seeming like a fairly normal sci-fi flick, but about halfway in, it really heads off into the wilderness. I just found this movie last year--I think it's a bit of a cult classic, but otherwise off the radar.

Fight Club has been the king of all mind-fuckery for me, though I haven't watched it from beginning to end since that first time in the theater. The title could also go to Requiem for a Dream, but I don't know that I could, in good conscience, recommend that anyone subject themselves to Requiem for a Dream.

I forgot PI!

I couldn't get all the way through Pi. I liked it, but it got kind of slow towards the end. For me, at least.

Pi put me to sleep lol

I highly recommend The Stand as well... but the book, not the movie.

Things that mess with my mind don't seem to bother most people:

and apparently Memory as well. I've been dreaming about that movie for several nights now after having watched it.

I couldn't watch A Clockwork Orange. I just can't get into pointless violence.

I just watched Moon. That's a very trippy film, and it's gotten very good reviews. You should check that out :)

Watched Vanilla Sky yesterday, I can say with little doubt that it is the best movie I've seen.

There was a climate of mindfuck in 1408, but it was somewhat predictable and ham fisted. There are lots of movies like that though, I'd like to think this is thread is more based on the movies which really do fuck your mind heavily, whilst being quality pieces of art, and maybe trying to convey a point to you. I don't feel 1408 achieves this successfully enough to really get a mention.

But of course I may well have missed something. I only watched it once in Czech, not english, so I may have not got the full blast of awesome it may have harboured. Either way, top.

I watched Let the Right One In couple of nights ago. Freaky stuff.

Yeah that's definitely on my list, but I've also been getting into Phillip K. Dick's books recently. I may wait until I've read it to check that one out, though its very likely I won't have the patience for that :D

Hell yeah! Its not stop-motion animation though, if that's what you mean. Just plain ol' drawings, but among the most creative ones I've seen. His other two feature films 'Gandahar' and 'Time Masters' are also great. Story's not as good but they're just as visually compelling.

I'll have to check out The Stand too, sounds right up my alley.

So I've been told, I already have the film here ready. :lol: But it'll probably go to waste if I watch it so soon after seeing the remake, so I'm gonna wait a few days till I watch it.

But it seems to me Abre Los Ojos has a much more dark/horror theme around it (in spite of being almost the exact same story), if that's true I suspect it won't touch me nearly as much as Vanilla Sky did. Still seems pretty awesome though.

I didn't think the Butterfly Effect was very good personally. As a film.

The "Saw" movies can definitely screw with your brain if you ignore the all the bloodshed and funky stuff and start thinking about the killer's motives. Is it right for the mere human to bring justice himself or should he just leave it be...
Anyway, my opinion is that it's very wrong how the 'justice' in these movies is given by the 'Puzzle'.

I wouldn't really consider them particularly mindfucking in relation to most already posted.

Since Mullholland Dr and Fear and loathing in LV already have been mentioned i'll throw in Memento. =) not exactly your average popcorn flick that one.

EDIT: Oh! I just remembered The Fountain. It took me like 3 views to take it all in from that movie. Although I was stoned the second time..

Thanks to the Internet though, I'm totally gonna try to get to some of this stuff, because I think it's really fascinating.

what really? no one has mentioned the fountain yet? i watched pan's labyrinth and the fountain back to back, needless to say it was mindfuckery
also on a lesser note but i'll mention it anyway "american physcho" give me a bit to think about/ creepy. Oh also pink floyd's "the wall".

Fear and loathing in LV, the book, was magical. I'm apprehensive to watch the film though. Adaptations have, for the most part, left a sour taste in my mouth.

Some of these recommendations are mindblowing- no one I know has seen Pi :[. And Pan's Labyrinth is my pick for film of the decade (well it's up there).

Others:

American Psycho: I watched this a couple of years ago at the age of 14 (not recommended) and it scarred me a little. In parts it's pornographic, senselessly in my opinion (though it is a great improvement on that awful, awful book it's based on). But the psychological profiling of Patrick Bateman is spot on. The best part of the movie is the ending- so you really have to be patient.

Un chien andalou and The Blood of a Poet (actually the whole Orphic trilogy) are also brilliant, twisted works. Both are surrealist film and greatly resemble dreams more than anything.

Hmm... I've seen a lot of movies that have done strange things to my head. The fountain was pretty strange...

Pi was fantastic, as was Abre Los Ojos. I've yet to watch Lost Highway (I attempted one day when I was stoned, and the opening scene freaked me out) but I know it has an amazing soundtrack. I remember seeing The Fountain, but I don't remember what I felt about it. Pan's Labrynth I saw at an outside, nighttime showing while laying in the grass at a park near my house and it was magical. Bowie's Labrynth is great too ("Did you just say 'Hello'?") David Lynch movies are pretty mainstream. As in he has a large following and they're probably in your local DVD selling place.

Alternatively you can get everything here on amazon or something, or everything is streamable, but I don't recommend that.

Seriously though if you want to watch a pretty mainstream mindfuck then roll with Mulholland Drive or Lost Highway, they're both some of my favourite movies, they really are top.

I saw The Fountain last week and it didn't do much for me. It was trying too hard to mindfuck me, like an over-eager partner who drinks so much they end up puking in their own hair and passing out on the floor. It put this whole contrived mythos right there on the surface so there was no room for subtext, no allegorical depth, and all the interactions between characters were highly melodramatic.

It's pretty coherent once you get it. In fact all Lynch movies are, it's just a struggle to 'get' it.

I'd also suggest Lost Highway next. Definately. It's my personal favourite.

It isn't really mindfucking no. In a scary way some parts are mindfucking (like the girl thrown in to the needle pit screaming), but not in an intellectual way. But as TheLight said, it's interesting to think about if it's right for one person to try to turn someone's life around at the risk of killing them. However this is my main problem with the last few Saw's. Most of the people if not all of them never even had any chance of fucking escaping! So it just goes against Jigsaw's point of putting them there in the first place. That is the only reason why it's just turned in to mindless violence. But the first two I think were very good and clever, most people just couldn't get passed the gore and actually think about it.

Donnie Darko is awesome, I've watched it probably 20+ times! The only movie I've done that. Fight Club is close second with probably 10+.
Primer I can vouch for too. I had no idea what the fuck had just happened when it ended.
Now my input to the list - Spiral. Not gonna say anything about it. Just watch it without reading the plot line or anything. I actually recommend this for all movies. Especially the ones in this thread. The plots and trailers usually ALWAYS give something away. I tend to watch like 20 seconds of a trailer and then stop it. If it looks good I'll watch it, you might end up watching a crap movie but it's better than watching a good one which is ruined.

Just found Delicatessen on my shelf while I was looking for Spiral (couldn't remember the name) lol. Gonna go watch that now, haven't seen it yet I don't think.

Also whoever mentioned Trainspotting - I'd disagree, it's not really a mindfuck at all, just a REALLY REALLY REALLY awesome movie!

Trainspotting and Fight Club are great movies.

I love the way trainspotting starts off, trashing all the meaningless things people do and think about everyday in the western culture. (not really a mindfuck movie)

I like Fight Club because it's about two guys (kind of) letting go of their materialistic lifestyle to try and hit 'rock bottom'. Highly suggested to those who haven't seen it. It fucks with your mind and all pulls together near the end (which I like).

I watched Delicatessen. Unless I completely missed something, it wasn't a mindfuck either. It was very arty, in a good way. But the plot was rather straight forward. It reminded me of Mary & Max, an animated film. I think mainly because of Aurore, who was fucking hilarious towards the end hahahaha. She really didn't wanna fuck it up again!
But yeh, it didn't fuck my mind as I thought it would. I think the biggest mind fucks are the ones that COULD happen IRL and you don't get it until the end. Haha yeah I had the same urge too. I found Lynch's '10 hints to unlocking Mullohand Drive', I'm gonna watch it again sometime and apply those before I search further. I'd love to talk about it too, seems like it'd be good fun to hash out some theories about it. I'm hunting down some more Lynch now. If his other movies even hold a candle to this one I'll be in for a hell of a good time.

Yeah I've got a pretty broad definition of mindfuck. Delicatessen isn't a movie that'll confuse or anything, but its just so out there and creative that it leaves my mind in a strange place very similar to confusion. If you liked that one check out City of Lost Children, its made by the same directors and has very similar art direction. Both are personal favorites.

I'll have to check out Spiral sometime, never heard of that one.

Hmmm ok, for me they're just more mindless action movies. Resident Evil was at least enjoyable, underworld bored the shit out of me. How idd they blow your mind exactly? I'm actually asking, not being sarcastic.

I'm just big on vampire/wearwolf and zombie movies with a pretty good cast.

Watched 1408 over the weekend: mind satisfactorily fucked. Easily the best horror movie I've seen that was made in the last ten years. Samuel L. Jackson did seem to phone-in some of the stock genre stuff, but the mindfuck portion (almost entirely John Cusack) was really well executed.

Well, it was first of all the story of a mindfucking, and while my first instinct would be to preclude films with the premise, "Dude's mind gets totally fucked in the chamber of mindfuck," here I felt they took on the challenge in an admirably head-on way and delivered a premeditated and unapologetic mindfucking with rare deftness. Some of my enjoyment is surely genre-related, too, being both a fan of the whole Lovecraftian horror shtick and a student of how genre conventions operate in the realm of sub/collective-conscious archetypes; I know plenty of fellow ex-English majors with a total mental block on genre work.

For those in this thread who can appreciate both a good Stephen King novel and films like "The Machinist" or "Requiem for a Dream," I think "1408" will be a worthwhile trip.

Well, I've discovered that the version I saw this weekend was the director's cut. I just finished watching the original release, and it's a totally different (less good) movie. They hacked two of the most effective scenes inside the room and slapped on a totally inappropriate "happy" ending :P

This is the second time I've unwittingly seen the director's cut of a movie, loved it, and then later found out that everyone else saw something neutered, mediocre and barely coherent, courtesy of executives who think they know better than the director.

Not exactly a movie but try David Lynch's ''sitcom'' Rabbits. It scared the shit out of me. And people who know me will attest to that being quite a hard thing to do.

I agree, the one most people seem to have seen had the lamest ending ever, ruined the whole movie basically. LAME!

Also yeah all those vampire etc. movies mentioned are NOT mind fucks. WE are talking about movies that you get to the end of and are like WTF just happened guys? Mvoes that make you think and stretch your limits of what you think is possible. Not vampires biting people's heads off etc.

2001: A Space Odyssey was a complete mindfuck when I first saw it, and it remains my favorite movie personally.

Since most of my personal favorites have been mentioned (Aronofsky, Lynch, Gilliam, Cronenberg, the Cubes, Donnie Darko etc etc....) I'm gonna throw in some unmentioned ones (at least I didn't notice them)

Andrei Tarkovsky has quite a few, Stalker namely, but people often seem to prefer Solyaris over Stalker, but personally I don't really even like Solyaris.

Alexandro Jodorowsky's El topo and The Holy Mountain, both insanely good movies and some of the most intense mindfucks I've ever seen to be honest.

Peter Weir's Picnic at hanging rock, beautiful, dreamy and haunting.

Nicolas Roeg - Don't look now...

Though it's not as big of a mindfuck I'm sure a lot of you will like Robin Hardy's The Wicker Man (the 1973 original not the lame remake with Nicolas Cage)

Matthew Barney's Cremaster Cycle for really "artsy" stuff.

Akira Kurosawa's Rashomon (ok, maybe not that big of a mindfuck but still an amazing movie) and Dreams.

Since someone mentioned Old Boy I'm gonna mention Audition by Takashi Miike, another great Korean director. He does have quite a few mindfuck movies, but no others spring to mind right now.

And I have to mention another Cronenberg favorite of mine, Dead Ringers...

AANNND for a few more mainstream mindfucks/weirdness akin to Fight Club and such - The Life of David Gale, Adaptation, Todd Solondz' Happiness, Lucky # Slevin, Being John Malkovich, Natural Born Killers etc etc..

I don't remember if anyone mentioned any other David Fincher movies than Fight Club, but Zodiac, The Game, Seven are all great movies too if you don't want to spend the rest of the day wondering what the hell just happened :)

And even though it's not a movie, it's one of the most intense trippy stuff I've seen....The Teletubbies......

I saw Solyaris a few years ago and didn't like it much either. Maybe I should give it another try sometime sometime, or perhaps I'll find Stalker first next time I check out Tarkovsky though. This isn't the first time I've heard its much better.

Also, I just gave my roommate a copy of Mulholland Drive. He's watching it right now for the first time :D.

Andrei Rublev and Stalker are both mindblowing. Andrei Rublev might not be anything weird or bizarre but it's definitely one of the most beautiful and amazing movies I've seen. Stalker is just plain awesome mindfuckery.
