      N0.1 RPG EXCLUDING FINAL FANTASY

well, no arguments, final fantasy is the best RPG series.

so whats say we exclude the final fantasy and zelda series and ask this.

what is the best RPG ever?

as i said, zelda games and final fantasy games are excluded.

      i would say fable.

though decision... fable is really good and morrowind is really good too. and lets not forget diablo... but that might not count as a rpg. anyway its between these three.

Sports games are certainly the worst genre. I mean...well..you know, they just suck.

Enjoying Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines right now, and really liked Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Have to say though that Morrowind with expansions is my absolute favourite. Have tried both Diablo 2 and some version of Final Fantasy. Diablo was just generally boring after a very short while with all the hack and slash and Final Fantasy...well, the cut-scenes where good but the game itself was just slow and extremely boring/bad.
      All that IMHO of course.

The Zelda games are not RPGs at all.

AKA, You've played one EA sports game, you've played 'em all. I don't even see why people bother getting the new version every year...

Well they are more of an adventure-RPG style as opposed to core EXP/level/magic gaining RPGs with separate overworld and battle systems.

I'd say still Legend of the Heaven Sword! Woot woot!

RPG stands for role-playing-game. nowhere does it say that you have to have a RTB or ATB battle system. zelda was more free-roam but still an RPG.

The .hack// series was quite nice, but got very boring very fast.

and xenosaga was never released in europe. oh well.

Usually means a bit more than that though, otherwise you could say that HL is an RPG because you are playing the role of Gordon after all.

Technically it is a role-playing game. But not something you'd put in say, Wikipedia, for people to learn about. And obviously there are certain traits to a game that rule out less fitting qualities in place of more fitting ones. And there's always marketing. "Fable" was labeled as Action if I'm not mistaken...

you have to use common sense to determine whether its an RPG or not, theres not really any direct line that dictates whether it is or isnt.

like, i could say HL is a FPS, i can sa that because you are in firs person and shooting. but with games like fable, its less obvious.

IMO, fable was an RPG. along the lines of zelda.
