Think about it.. if you stress your PC's CPU, or even your vid card's GPU, the temp is gonna rise, obviously they can underclock chips and optimize them to not throw off as much heat. A nice sized heatsync and fan can dissapate the rest of the heat (who knows though.. it'd be awesome to see a water-cooled PS3 heheh)

Yes, it rises and that's why I have all these fans cooling my computer. Have you listened to a server in 1U-format? They make a lot of noise to be able to cool everything in that small space.

#7 I admit, i have only worked a little with OpenGL and not much with DirectX. I can't answer how they are going to handle the SDK at all. I do hate DirectX however and I say this mostly because of its liscensing and lack of being open-source. Well, tear me apart on that one, but that was mostly oppinion based.. not fact-based statement. (I have to admit though... Sony has become pretty bad with copy-protection and licensing lately. Look at OpenMG Jukebox heh. Microsoft is still worse though)

I think I hit most points there. Any grey areas and I'm sure i'll hear them, especially #7..
Actually Microsoft isn't anywhere near worst when it comes to copy-protection. Are numerous software vendors that uses very tough licensing. Change anything in your computers hardware-configuration and you will need to contact them for a new license. Do this a few times in a short time, not uncommon for people interested to keep up with the latest, and they will start questioning you. And let's not forget technologies such as Laserlok, securom and safedisc that cause more problems for law-abiding user than it does for the people cracking the software.

And just what do you mean with the licensing regarding DirectX?

Besides, there's also the "company motive" involved. They're not going to spend hundreds of millions just to have a CPU that's hardly usable, and needs to be underclocked...

I admit. Sony has its faults. Just look at their music management software and of course their exclusivley licensed ATRAC codecs. Now ATRAC is pretty nice, but when they go so far to make a HD that only supports it and not mp3.. thats a little extreme.

And I should not mix Sony-Ericsson with Sony, they are two different companies. Sony-Ericsson has been quite good with support for files. They do not like Real media streams and are one of the few trying to push 3gp standards in its place (they have their own liscensing, but not as bad as Real's or Microsoft's.) Also Sony's trademark ATRAC support is not present, so I really can't compare them too much to Sony, as they do their own thing.

I think that the PS3's processor array is going to be well-managed. So their shouldn't be extreme stress on any parts of it that can cause excessive heat generation. It sounds hard to do, and I'm sure it is, but I doubt Sony is gonna want to drop Cell technology which has the potential to make them stand alone in both graphics and processing fields on consoles.

PSP gets released in Japan in 2 days.. Should be interesting, hope US release follows shortly.

I suspect February to Mid-March for the PSP U.S. release. Sony could be shooting themselves in the foot by not releasing it sooner, but I geuss you can't flood the market with products like the PSP. Sony's putting its foot in the water, testing the temperature (how "hot" the product will be), and waiting to dive right in. Then again, the U.S. and Japanese "waters" are entirely different...

so true. Timing is everything.. anyone remember Sega's downfall.. it came in the form on Dreamcast (a nice system.. just bad time and not enough devlopers signed on..). Sony always has good backing in that aspect at least... some very awesome game series will be coming to PSP as well as some fresh new ones.

Yeah, Sony's got a lot of backing that other companies wish they had.

      1. Japanese people trust it more for their gaming/tech innovations
      2. Americans trust it because the Japanese trust it.

More of "it's cool" factor from both sides of the world.
