I finally experienced Inland Empire. Why the hell haven't I watched this before? (tbh I think I was afraid it would ruin David Lynch for me - I had heard some pretty bad things about it)

There's a certain kind of amazing and profound cinematic experience you can't get from anybody except Kubrick and Lynch. They're not in the endless line of film school rebels who want to break all the rules out of some hatred for 'the system' or to try to be different, these guys are honestly artists who refuse to be boxed in to making formulaic movies that will appeal to the biggest demographic or capitolize on what's popular now - they honestly want to explore what's possible in the cinematic medium when you refuse to play by the rules.

Working in DV has obviously freed Lynch up considerably. At first I was confused as to why DV and not HD, but he explained that HD is too crisp and clear and there's no mystery anywhere, whereas with DV (standard broadcast resolution digital video) it looks more like film stock from the early 30's - there are areas onscreen with no clarity and no information and your mind is left to fill in the blanks.

As for the movie - an amazing experience!! The surface story isn't as appealing as Mulholland Drive, but the dream elements go much much deeper even than in MD, and finally he's succeeded in making a film that not only plumbs the terrifying depths of the unconscious but bursts triumphantly forth into transcendence at the end. As usual with Lynch it was a disquieting experience most of the way through, but inexplicably toward the end it somehow became exhilarating and triumphant.

Definitely not for everybody though, If you're not already a fan of Lynch don't start here.

Lol just keep in mind if you do - don't try to make sense of it - just enjoy it the way you would a dream. In fact keep telling yourself that - "It's only a dream.. "

It also helps to be familiar with his other films because he refers to several of them at times. There are also references to some of his favorite films of Hollywood history such as Sunset Boulevard.

It as actually my fascination with Mulholland Drive that first led me to deeply explore a film and to seek out analyses online. That film can be (and has been) explored possibly more deeply than any other, and after having been through that process I was prepared for Inland - though I don;t think this one would yield up much to exploration - I honestly think this time he left behind the need for things to make sense, even when analyzed after the fact, and went strictly with feelings and intuition.

      Reign Over Me.
I liked it. It's really tear jerker, and I think it does it well. Very dramatic, and it did gave me back some sense of ... scale, about the 9/11 attacks.
For the past few days I've seen Adam Sandler everywhere and have been saying out loud "Go away Adam Sandler!" but he didn't bother me at all in this movie.

I made the mistake of watching mulholland drive as if it had some kind of clue and there were logical explanations for everything. I watched it with my sister and I can remember our frustration when it ended, we were like: "What the hell? Is this the ending? But we don't get it yet!" Started looking for explanations on the internet but couldn't find anything....! I watched it a second time and loved it.

So yeah this one definitely sounds interesting.

Tbh I haven't seen much of Lynch, just blue velvet, the elephant man and twin peaks (movie & series)... And I'm an absolute fan of the twin peaks series.

Well I just watched Unknown. I enjoyed watching it... but I won't remember it in a few weeks.
And also: how much do Ralph Fiennes and Liam Neeson lookalike? I always mix them up!

If you have ever felt that 'meeting the parents' of you're significant other is a horrortrip then you can watch Lynches Eraserhead to ge things into the perspective.

      PS this is not recomendation

Last night I watched City Lights, a Charlie Chaplin film. It was so sweet, and the ending was so wonderful.

Tonight I watched Some Like It Hot. It was good, but I didn't like it as much as City Lights.

Sherlock Holmes: A game of shadows

Was very good, even better than the first I'd say. Ending was a bit disappointing, but eh, the rest of the movie was great.

Insidious- Not usually a fan of horror/thrillers movies, but it was dreaming related and also was kind of an action film so I liked it 8/10
They say dreaming is dead, no one does it anymore.
It's not dead it's just that it's been forgotten, removed from our language.
Nobody teaches it so nobody knows it exists.
The dreamer is banished to obscurity.
Well, I'm trying to change all that, and I hope you are too.
      By dreaming, every day.

These weeks I haven't watched many movies, 1 and half weeks ago I watched 5 movies on vhs during one night. They were (in this order):

This was really bad movie, interesting point was that it's based on scifi-novel written by founder of scientology. (the irony )

I've found this quite underrated. There were wierd shifts and the whole alternate western / dystopian future crossover was something new to me.

This was somewhat lighter western after the previous. Too much comedy, without forced comedic approach it would been better movie. Some interesting consepts and motives in the story in spite of comedy

This is usually held as good movie. It's funny and strange movie about government, media and hollywood. They are producting a fake war to cover some scandal under president elections

Young travolta. Not much more to say, I was quite sleepy at this point.

      * Ä * Ä * Ä *

Under couple of last days I've again watched couple of movies. I've seen them before. They are both very recomendable strange movies: Gilliams Brazil and Bowies Man who fell to earth (not to be confused with another perfect movie The Man from Earth)

I just finished watching "The Fountain" and I have to say, it is now my #1 favorite movie. 10/10.

Not only that but it's great inspiration for a dreamworld.

I love that feeling when you immediately know you have a new favourite film. For me it was The Darjeeling Limited, a brilliant film in all aspects.

Haven't seen The Fountain though, will have to look it up.

For me, it was Hot Rod

Also, those two movies but most recently Never Let Me Go gave me that effect of instant... wow.

I have an eclectic taste P:

Real Steel definitely didn't do it for me. It was too predictable for me. And the robot is sitting their getting its ass beat then suddenly hugh jackman figures something out but the fighting style doesn't seem the change at all, the robot just starts beating ass instead of losing. 8/10

Warrior - About a couple of guys in a "sparta" UFC tournament. It was really quite good but there were a few too many incredibly lame scenes, which just kind've ruined the whole movie in a way. Even though the rest of it was good. Some bits also just were empty as fuck coz they tried to wrap it up in under 2 hours, which seems to be happening a lot these days.
Oh, also blatantly stealing from the Karate Kid 6.5/10.

Also just finished watching "Mr. Nobody". That movie is ten times more confusing than inception. It's in that same category as "The Fountain" not nearly as good though. And did I mention it's incredibly confusing?

It's really hard to get through, but an overall decent movie. 7.5/10

I was planning on seeing Contraband with my BF, but we weren't allowed in unless we were with someone over 18. Ugh.

So we decided on the most awkward movie EVER to watch - A Dangerous Method. Yeah.

It was good, but neither of us would go see it again... it's a bit drawn out, plus it was highly awkward because of the subject matter. 6/10

I'm watching Never Let Me Go right as we speak haha. But to me.. it's not having as much as an effect. I finished the book about a week ago so it's all so fresh in my mind that I'm picking out all the differences. It's certainly a good adaptation though, could have been a lot worse. They got the three main characters spot on.

I didn't like it until the end. I never read the book though so I didn't get the point. Then near the end after the one scene ("There are no deferrals") it struck home and I was like BLARG SADFACE

Just finished The Big Year. Turns out it's about Bird Watching. Not bad entertainment. It's like the opposite of Never Let Me Go because that film is slow and every single line and scene is shaped around one specific theme while The Big Year is more interesting to watch but with a pretty light, easy to recognize theme about making the right choices and sacrifices. Not a whole lot of comedy but the characters pull you in so it's a good watch.

Everything works out in the end, sometimes even badly.

Hanna - Not bad. Pretty interestingly shot, with some pretty good action. The exposition was a little awkward, at times, but it was enjoyable.

Immortals - Don't know if I'd say it was better than I thought it would be, but I was pleasantly surprised, at times. It kind of put the best elements of 300's visual styling with the story and execution that Clash of the Titans wishes it had. I would have liked to have seen a little more with the Gods, but I'm not really disappointed.

I am Number Four - I enjoyed it. The action was satisfying. The love story was a little textbook, though.

Let Me In - Wasn't too bad, but I have my gripes. Not sure - since it's been a while - but I think I enjoyed the original a bit better, though I liked the quality of the new one's cinematography. I didn't really like all of the CG movements for whenever Abby was 'vamping out', though. I like that they tried to make her move with more agility and ferocity than in the original, but it comes off as kind of cheesy.

I'm watching immortals right now, though I stopped to fawn over athena. It's the same chick that tried to kill shia lebouf in transformers 2. That gives her bonus points right off the bat (she'd get extra if she succeeded, then again when you're at maximum hotness what do these bonus points matter anyway?)

Aside from the sex and violence though, the movie is pretty lacking.

Everything works out in the end, sometimes even badly.
