For my crew, violent games make them more violent. I actually tried an experiment with them about it. The more cursing and violence they're exposed to- the more they imitate it.

You're objections to my allowing Oblivion is what makes the game so great. You can be as honest or dishonest as your conscience allows. Neither my kids nor I play magic based characters and they're not allowed to slaughter anyone they want. They quickly tell on each other when one or the other starts butchering innocent townspeople.

My kids have damned themselves to their limited sources because they are too literal about most things. If I allow them to watch Cinderella, for instance, they reason that it's perfectly okay then for them to watch Harry Potter. I even had to almost stop allowing us to watch Heroes because they said it was actually magic based which would contridict my ban on such.
Over the years they're learning not to force me on some of my leniencies because that just means I'll limit something else.

And sometimes their agruments are well-founded and I've had to accept what they say. For instance, I love Zombie movies (so long as they're not unnecessarily gory or magic based), but I FIRMLY dislike and disallow vampires. My kids pointed out they're practically the same thing- vampires such blood to live and zombies eat people. My viewpoint is that vampires are inherently evil and zombies are usually animal like and without intellect or malicious intent (i.e. all things need to eat). But my kids won the day and I no longer watch zombie movies.

I don't intend to be rude, but, it seems that you're being very closed-minded.

For instance, what's wrong with magic? To me, that's always been a very light-hearted subject ie. yeah, I know magic isn't real, but it's fun to pretend etc.

Maybe your children have come to put too much emphasis on what they are watching, instead of simply enjoying it for the spectacle that it is. Would you ban your children from going to watch a magic show, even though they feature no 'real' (I use the word real here very loosely) magic but are great fun to go to nonetheless?

I've got to throw in my 2 cents on this...

You allow your kids to play Oblivion, but don't allow them to play magic characters or kill people? That's got to be the most hilarious and ridiculous thing I've ever heard!

      1. Magic isn't real

      2. Video games aren't real

      3. Video game magic isn't actually magic

      4. Nothing that happens in video games actually happens

      4. Stories about magic are stories about magic

      5. Stories aren't real (unless they are based on an actual event)

      6. Stories about magic might take place in a world in which magic is not evil

Magic isn't real, get over it.

Zhaylin, I understand your stance on violence. Young children should not be allowed exposure to violent forms of entertainment. As they get older, the effects of entertainment violence is minimized and limited to inherently angry/violent/stupid people. Just make sure you teach your kids the difference between reality and fiction and also that real-world violence is not ok. When they get older, I'd suggest loosening the collar.

WakataDreamer, you sound like a teenager. DO IT! DECEIVE YOUR PARENTS! VIOLENT VIDEO GAMES ARE TOTALLY NOT BAD FOR SEMI-INTELLIGENT YOUNG MEN AND WOMEN LIKE YOURSELF! Seriously, you're not hurting anybody, not even yourself.

It depends entirely on what your belief system is. To me, magic is very real. I used to be a Solitary Practicioner or Wicca, I also did a fair share of dream interpretation and tarot card readings for people and I was very good That's why I am closed-minded on the subject because my religious beliefs are quite different now.
Illusion is not magic but the way most magicians work is to give it a mystical element, so most magic shows are out of the question, but they can play around with it themselves but have no desire to.

I also recommend Portal. It was very challenging and fun and I loved the music
I also recommend membership for RealArcade. They have tons of games you can try for free and you get 1 free game a month. The price is something like $5.00 off for the purchase of any other games you like.

But wouldn't you say that believing something doesn't make it so? Due to the fact that if magic was real, we'd actually be able to see evidence running rampant means that there's even less of a chance that it's real than God. If you consciously know that the magic performed on stage and magic in games isn't real, what difference does it make? Don't you think it's a little hypocritical to disallow your children to play video games that include magic or see a magic show, but you would allow them to practice stage magic? Let's assume magic is real. The magic in those shows and on video games still isn't.

Also, dream interpretation and tarot card readings aren't magic. Tarot card readings is classified as Astrology. Have you any personal experiences with this Wicca that would conclusively lead you to believe that magic is real?

I'm going to make a thread in the Extended Discussions Page so I don't hijack this one any further.
      Great questions though!

      Portal was FRICKIN AWESOME.

Hearing the song at the ending was the most fun I ever had watching the credits for any videogame ever.

I played Gunz, too, but not nearly as much as I did Gunbound....haha, good memories
