      Saddest Endings

My friend and I were talking, what are some of the saddest endings ever?

      I got:
      Romea and Juliet
      The Notebook
      City of Angles
      Ghost
      Old Yeller
      Casablanca
      Gone with the Wind
      The Godfather
      Hamlet
      Titanic

Also the episode of Futurama called Jurassic Bark

A story I have yet to tell in full. One day.

      One day...

      Les Enfants du Paradis

      Charlie Chaplin's Limelight
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0235060/ <----- This Chinese movie The Road Home was the saddest thing I've ever seen. I was inconsolable. I could almost feel breasts springing up on my chest.

And if you include operas, Madame Butterfly of course.

I love a good tearjerker. It's good to be reminded that there's still a heart beating in there somewhere (better than checking for a pulse).

The Elephant Man (1980) was the saddest thing I have watched thus far. It evoked very strong feelings.

Blow. One night during my freshman year some friends and I were all sitting around getting drunk and watching Blow, and I actually began to cry near the end. And not just a little, either...

      I blame the vodka.

      • The original story of The Hunchback of Notre Dame. [EVERYbody dies in the worst way; nothing like the disney movie. Under no circumstances should a person younger than thirteen read this book. I've never cried harder about fiction in my life.]
      • The Diary of Anne Frank [to this day, anything about this girl makes me sob like a child.]
      • Crush. [anytime I've watched this movie since, I end it right before the sad part because I just can't take it.]
      • Requiem For A Dream. [friends and i used to refer to this movie as "the longest heartbreak on film". the ending to each characters' story breaks my heart, but the part about the mother is just too much.]
      • Road To Perdition. [this movie made me hate Jude Law, but the rest of it is so good, I still watch it.]
      • The Hours. [whole movie is filled with sad moments actually; the fact that Virginia Wolfe actually does that to herself makes it even sadder.]
      • The Fox and The Hound. [still can't watch that movie to this day, even though I own it.]

When I read your post I was like huh... But now I remember and YES it WAS sad!!! Goddamn I was like shit...

What is Crush? I IMDB-ed it but came up with tons of movies of the same name...

My favorite books, The Coldfire Trilogy, definitely made me cry at the end.

Okay Korean drama Autumn Tale / Autumn Story. I really question the sanity of people who create a story THAT depressing.

Crush (2002) is a movie written and directed by John McKay, about three women going through their mid-life crises, with varying results. The three women are played by Andie McDowell, Imelda Staunton, and Anna Chancellor. Also starring Kenny Doughty.

It could be a lot worse as far as sadness goes, but ever since I watched it the first time, I just would rather watch the movie and pretend like the sad part never happens.

God damn... Old Yeller.... *gets misty-eyed*

There are so many movies that are utterly depressing, but end on an upnote. I mean Old Yeller had the puppy. The Fox and the Hound has the new wifey fox and redemption/friendship rekindling. The Lion King has everything after Mufasa dies. Dumbo has flying/payback/friendship/success after that god damn Baby Mine scene.

Hmm, I'm gonna have to think about it. I don't tend to buy or rewatch movies with really depressing endings.

I thought it was crazier than sad.

I think this thread should be renamed the spoiler thread. When someone tells you a movie has a sad ending, it's obvious someone's going to die, and you can usually figure out who.

Childhood's end has to be one of the worst for me, it's not a crying sad at the end, its a hopeless sad.

How has no one said Of Mice and Men yet?

I remember when I was young I cried while reading Winnetou and some book forgot the name where Davy Crockett dies defending the Alamo where, after they ran out of ammunition, he grabbed his violin and played until the Mexicans killed him.

It wasn't the end that made it sad, but it still deserves to be mentioned: Bambi.

There are other ways to end on a sad note than kill off a character.
