Heroes, Volume 4: "Fugitives"

Now that volume 3 has wrapped up, I couldn't be more anxious for volume 4 to hit my t.v. screen. Anyone else catch that "Presidential, Barack Obama-esque" man in the backseat of the limo with Nathan at the start of Volume 4? :lol: Think that was intentional?

One of the many things I like about this show is its originality. The push/pull dividing relationship between Peter and Nathan is awesome.

Any predictions/assumptions/guesses about Heroes, Volume 4: "Fugitives"?

You say that like it's not what would really happen, if this kind of thing actually went down.

I think it has less to do with "trying to be like X-Men" than it does with the governmental paradigm of National Security.

Wow, this episode was just utterly fulfilling after the somewhat aimless direction it's been going in the past few weeks. I especially love how Heroes ends each season with a pre-cap of the next volume.

The black president was a nice touch to our current reality

and YES, it's for sure, in iron-clad, that Sylar is back to his normal, "evil" self. I really couldn't stand the thought of him ending up as a good guy. He's just so frickin cool as the bad guy. (don't get me wrong, I still want the good guys to win....but even the terms of good and bad are arbitrary in this show, lol.)

Well, looks like the Season 3 thread is pretty much wrapped up....should we lock it?....actually, naw, I'm sure people are still catching up with the show :P

Understatement: I can't wait for Season 4.

It looks like they're probably going to bring Micah back. I hope that Monica (?... the muscle mimic) comes back as well. I need to go back and watch that episode again to catch more of what was in the files that the President had.

I heard the actress that played Monica had some problems with the producers of the show, and thus they cut her off. But it would be nice to have her come back and do something, cuz otherwise her character would have been for nothing (all she's accomplished so far is failing to get Micah's dad's medal back and getting Niki killed....yeah, I think she needs to redeem herself, lol)

I've already read about some of season 4, sounds good to me. I wonder if Sylar is gone for good? You know even if he isn't they'll have to have some new badass step up to the plate. I can't wait for the season to start, I hope Peter kicks some ass.

Why would he not be back? He has Claire's healing ability. A shard in the back of his head only means he's immobilized. But there is the fire and the explosion to consider (since a shard in the head assumes all his abilities are temporarily disabled as well)....so, yeah, maybe he's dead.

The only thing that would make sense in his coming back is Peter returning the favor and saving Sylar's life. (they may very well end up on the same side, with the whole killing Arthur Petrelli scene)

Consider the flow of the story as well, and put yourself in the writers' shoes. Would it seem right to get rid of Sylar just yet?

It wouldn't to me, but the writers don't make much sense. Quinto could have other things he wants to move on to do, but I hope not. Sylar is too awesome!

Cmon, this show went downhill. I remember when it was in its prime in the first season, it was kinda cool but seaon 2 and on till now, its goin down hard like that plane crash. and talk about rippin off Lost like cmon,

-opens with a digital clock at 7:15am (Lost 5.01, opens at 8:15am with an old analog clock)
-Nikki watching the TV at the start (Lost 4.01, jack watches TV in the morning, some camera work is the same)
-Peter trying to save a guy with the other guy while being a paramedic, and rippin off the lines (any Jack centric, mostly 1.11, the confrontations between Christian and Jack)
-they try to live a normal life and keep themselves a secret (Lost season 4+5)
-uh, the plane crash at the end and the faded music into silence (Lost in general)
-next week's headline "It started with a plane crash... that will change their lives forever" (CMON!)
-next weeks preview, people running thru the forest, plus surrounded by plane wreckage and bad guys hunting them down, please...

If i recall the writers of lost and heroes are good friends, so there are some nods to each other in the respective shows. I thought this episode was bad ass, i was getting bad ass bumps when they shot like 3 tasers into sylars back and he just turned around and looked pissed, sylar is one super powered person you don't want to get pissed. Is anyone else kinda angry that Hiro has no powers, but ando does? I think ando is cool and all, but i would prefer hiro to have powers too again.

I would like to see Hiro have his powers back, I would also like to see him become like the Hiro from the future in the first season where he looks like a ninja.

I'm curious as to whether Peter has regained all his powers or if he has to regain them all again. I thought it was silly with him hanging on for dear life in the plane when he can fly.

The show is much better when they just follow one plot line and not change scenes constantly.

Pretty bad-ass how Sylar is the only one they can't contain so far. I can imagine him being the anti-hero of this season.

I haven't seen season four yet... I'll get around to it eventually. I don't know. There were isolated episodes or storylines that were cool in season three but mostly it was a train wreck. Personally, tons of actions were way out of character. I'm not a fan of Tracy/Speedgirl. Matt's character development halted and he turned into an angel. Mr. Petrelli was lame. All of the death scenes were void of any emotion or development. Claire had an emotional breakdown every episode. I don't care about Mohinder at all anymore. And what the crap was up with the eclipse episodes?

I don't know. I sincerly don't mean to bash anyone who liked season three, and I understand what you liked about it if you did. More power to yu if you enjoy season four. I'm just not too hyped about it. (I've been rewatching season one and will probably watch season two again right now.)

Overall, I was disappointed by the first episode. I say this because I DID get the feeling it was going over into X-men territory. Majorly.

I dunno, I think I like what they did with this first episode. Mohinder might actually start to be more cool, it looks like, though Peter is still pretty much an idiot (really reminds me of Clark on Smallville, how he has so much potential, but is a naive fool, though I still love both of them). Sylar is even more badass, which I love; he is by far my favorite character. Nathan is still a manipulative ass, and Noah is with him now?

Claire seems even more angsty and foolhardy, which I wasn't sure was possible, and frankly she just gets on my nerves now (again to draw a comparison to Smallville, Lana Lang, not in character but in how sick I'm getting of her). It looks like there might have been a couple of new characters on that plane, though, which could be cool.

I also have a theory on how Hiro will get his powers back, but it seems a bit too obvious, so I don't want to say anything yet.

Whatever happened to the german? I looked for spoilers for the future episodes...lets just say, based on the show you referenced, I don't think you are going to like the casting for a specific new member of the show MoS.

And I actually like Claire's whole arc. She's a girl who spent the first few seasons trying to find meaning, and find a purpose. She's been trying to turn her ability into something that makes her feel alive. She's finally done that. She feels that she can help battle the evil with the "gift" she's been given, and that's her one main goal in life. We've watched everything else she's ever had in her life fail, and this is something that she's latching onto.

Even her own power hurt her. They don't really make people's powers all that clear, but in the episode where her power "increased" it hurt her to have the power. Though that could have been because her powers were screwed up.

It apparently hurt Sylar when they used the prods, but it wasn't enough to shut down his nervous system, just like Elle's misfiring power - which would have either killed a human being or, at the very least, knocked them unconscious - only caused her a lot of pain.

Anyone have a clue what ever happened to Charles Devaux? I remember seeing the writers say he was coming back sometime, but we havent heard any mention on him since season 1 or 2, hes one of the only from the older gen we don't know alot about.

Saw it on Tuesday night and I enjoyed it. I think I might watch it again, as having a talkative 16 year-old who's already seen it sitting next to you is somewhat of a distraction. Meh.

Hiro needs to get his powers back. (And I foresee a fair amount of [convenient] GPS tracking in this season.)

I can't help but like Noah. He has a plan. He always has a plan. He doesn't take a dump without a plan. I just hope we find out what it is sooner rather than later.

Death by Sylar is the only true indicator that someone is dead... usually.

I agree. But if he wasn't hugging Nathan, he might have noticed Noah sneaking up behind him. Still, he still knows that Nathan is his brother (or is he?... kidding.... almost), so he doesn't want to flat-out disown him. He can't fly. While he was fighting the dude in the plane he accidentally touched nikki and lost the super strength he got from Mohinder. He can only steal one power at a time now.

Well maybe not steal, clone. I'm sure Nathan would have said something if he didn't have his flight anymore so he probably doesn't actually take the power from them. I don't know about evolving. I doubt the writers are even going that far with Matt, I'd be willing to bet they won't really explain the change at all. I think the formula just gave Peter a new but similar power.

Guud episode, tonight. Like...damn guud episode.

Sylar was all kinds of awesome, and I really liked the way they incorporated African mystic-man. I loved how lured Parkman into the trailer, and then it was all-of-a-sudden locked and Matt had to pry it open. It gives the mystic a bit of substance without making him "so material that it's corny as Hell, after his on-screen death." Very well done.

I trust HRG. He might have fucked up ways of doing stuff, but it's always got a good reason.

And fucking Sylar's got a protege now?! What!?!?

I agree. HRG is one of my favorite characters, if only because he does what he feels is right, while keeping his family in mind. He makes a lot of tough decisions and does a lot of what seems is fucked up, in the eyes of the onlooker, but I don't think he's ever done anything for the wrong reasons. I just hope that, no matter how obscure they make his motives, he stays on the right side. I'll be really upset if he ends up going bad like Nathan did.

I like it! He's found a way to gain allies in his own fight, without just killing them and taking their powers. It makes him all the more menacing, if you ask me. I hope he can find more "special" people to join him. I like a bit of a level playing field, between the heroic and the wicked. :cooler:

I like Sylar because he's not really such a terrible guy. Like I could totally brawl it out with him, then buy him a drink. I really like how he's not a clichéd 'bad guy' in the sense that he has no illusions of taking over the world, or deluding himself into thinking he's right because he's God-like. He just really doesn't give a shit. He's looking for answers, and is paranoid of people lying to him, and has no tolerance for bullshit. But sometimes he does badass evil stuff just for the sheer fun of it. He can be extremely blunt, or subtly sly and scheming, and he likes a level playing field.

In short, he's a —ing awesome character.

I was thinking that last week. It reminds me of a line from The Hunt for Red October: "Russians don't take a dump without a plan." He's kind of the same way. I find Angela to be the same way to a degree. *thinks on that*

I'm not finished watching yet, but Sylar seems like a loser now. So full of himself. Smiling like a loser when he does the stuff he does. What a tool. Freaking daddy issues. That character is so lame. And for that matter...so are all people who gain some kind of god complex when they hold a gun.


I do understand why they did what they did with Peter's powers...but eh, it seems like the same thing they do to classes in mmos when they are too powerful. I've never been in favor of nerfs.

I liked Peter's character so far (that is, 1 episode). He's better with his powers back ;)

On the Elle overloading: Elle did get pain, but she did not kill herself. That amount of electricity would have hurt anyone but those with powers. Anyway...

But he could only use powers once he thought about the person or so, he was never thinking about Arthur when he took the powers from others. And i think arthur would have noticed if peter had taken his power (hes observant) since peter has the hand glow.

Nice theory, we'll see how it ends.
I just finished watching episode 15. It was okish, but the usual big cliffhanger wasn't really there. Shame.

Not to be all blurf about this but Peter Arthur and Sylar all have the same power. Also I imagine these writers only did what they did to Peter in order to candor to the way the audience felt that super powered characters like him suck. If they intended for his power to have always been like that I would be amazingly surprised.

Apparently their power of empathic mimicry is dependant about their personality. Sylar apparently has his manifest as eating brains (j/k), Peter used to have it as simply knowing people meanwhile Arthur just steals it.

Sylar once was able to use his powers the same way Peter used to be able to, but then was like no thanks.

If this new power is the same power he always had then it might be his personality that is affecting it.

Or it could simply be a power like matts where you have to have your power evolve over time. I think matt used to only be able to read minds, then one day blam he could control people.

And now he can draw the future. When he started doing that, I was like WDF O.o

I still don't understand why they kept Sylar overpowered and made Peter all weakling.

Yeah, I hate nerfs. I think that they could quite possibly say that Peters old power was taken from his father, or they could say he simply recieved a new power, etc. They could explain it a number of ways.

Rather than letting other characters use their powers better, they just completely nerfed Peter.

Exactly. They shouldn't have. With his awesome powers he had a reason to be all "I've to save the world", but now he hasn't got a reason.

Apparently she is sort of dead. She died a while back but got sucked into a computer after death. After that she was deleted but said that she would meet some guy named druker again.

If Micah is rebel, Heroes would become epic awesomeness :P

I'm kind of glad Sylar remembered his father. I'm getting tired of microwave-kid and the "temporary good guy" Sylar. He's gonna go kill someone now.

And I'm happy that Peter finally learned to not go along with Nathan. The last time he hugged him he got a taser in the back.

Episode 18 was awesome. "I"m going to kill my father." Yeah, like you do that everyday XD

Apparently their power of empathic mimicry is dependant about their personality. Sylar apparently has his manifest as eating brains (j/k), Peter used to have it as simply knowing people meanwhile Arthur just steals it.

Sylar once was able to use his powers the same way Peter used to be able to, but then was like no thanks.

If this new power is the same power he always had then it might be his personality that is affecting it.

Or it could simply be a power like matts where you have to have your power evolve over time. I think matt used to only be able to read minds, then one day blam he could control people.

The writers most likely curtailed Peter's powers since they didn't really fit in the context of him being on the run. Otherwise, he could stomp the military guys just as easily as Sylar does and there would be no way to make a plot out of it. Unless they make it so that Sylar never becomes the real bad guy again (instead of just a nasty fellow who doesn't interact with any other characters), I'm sure Peter will get his full powers back. The only other option is that some other character step up as the main champion and Peter is just too popular at this point.

Well, I don't know, they might be able to work some cunning into Peters one only ability, to make it more of an underdog sort of thing. My guess, though, is that he just touches Sylar(dirty) at some point and he's back to being able to take whatever power he wants (since Sylar doesn't really need to cut people's heads off anymore; he just likes to).

No, Peters brother was the one flying, his brother saved him. It was hard to tell you had to wait till after they landed. If you'll notice, right after he flies off, he is sitting next to his mother and Nathan is talking to them.

Sometimes we can't get to an episode early but it is nice to see what other people's opinions are of the show.

But you're right, you don't have to use spoiler tags because, I mean, the show is predictable.

However for major things like THIS PERSON IS = REBEL.

Major plot revelations should be spoiled.

Oh yeah, I completely forgot about it. I was pretty bummed that Daphne died, but it really was one of the most emotionally charged death scene I think I've ever seen on TV.
It's on par with Charlie Pace from Lost's death scene and... hmm... I can't think of another one off hand.

Really great scene. If I had a choice I'd love to go out in similar fashion.


I also really hope that was foreshadowing to Parkman's (hopefully) newly emerging telekinesis. Telepathy and telekinesis really go hand in hand. I'd love that to be the case.

Finally got around to it, and I'd have to say that was the best episode this season. Hiro going for the wheelbarrow cracked my shit up, and Daphne dying instead of running away slapped me upside the head. Maybe I'm lowering the bar, but this show is usually so predictable that I was impressed when they got me there.

I liked the episode. I loved seeing Sylar being himself again - toying with the man that was tearing the city apart trying to catch people like him, and acquiring his new ability. I also liked Claire's drinking contest with the guys (:smitten:); and I appreciated the extra validity being added toward my loathing for Nathan.

I quite liked the episode. It felt kind of nostalgic :)

I like the idea of Sylar and Danko teaming up. Now all we need is Peter to get his original power back and we're up for a great end of the season! Maybe baby Matt Parkman can help with his Toddler Touch 'n' Go? (The most awesome name for an ability on the show yet :D )

Speaking of Toddler Touch 'n' Go, I wonder if Ando used his ability on the toddler and then the toddler used his ability on Hiro if Hiro would get his teleportation (and possibly time travel) back.

That's probably gonna happen next week. I loved when Ando shot the guy with his charge. That was amazing.

His men got killed because they were going in after the guy: the computer flagged his DNA in a database, but they didn't know what his power was. Noah Bennett reamed him out for "going in blind," remember?

I don't think Danko has a power, just a history of "going native" and sacrificing his men when the going gets tough.

You got it. I suppose it's a testament to his acting that when I first saw him my reaction was, "Gah, Puppetmaster!" He was a very nice guy, though: quiet, courteous, and it seemed like he makes point of knowing everybody's name.

Dunno why, but past Angela reminded me of Lindslay Lohan.

That "sister" episode disappointed me. I expected better.

I knew this season wouldn't be that great when they announced that they were going to focus more on character development, which translates into "Our budget was cut, so people talking instead of special effects".

That's why the only powers you see being used are Parkman's squinty eyed mind control, or Sylar immobilizing people with a wave of his hand. Or Rebel controlling sprinklers with his blackberry.

This show is over-rated. Bad writing, bad acting...Special effects are cool once in a while but it's not worth it. Almost as bad as smallville....

Season 1 was good, though...

Huh?

Who, Nathan? Sylar had all of Nathan's memories. All of Nathan's belongings would help fill in the gaps of the memories he might not have acquired. Parkman went into Sylar's mind and blocked out (or tried to) all parts of Sylar that were Sylar. Essentially, he is now Nathan, but apparently with some residual Sylar left in his subconscious.

Pretty good finale overall...

Like in the episode where they were digging up bodies in the desert, Nathan and Peter fly off, and you don't even see them take off. Instead you see Angela cock her head and look upwards. How cheap is that?

Hear, hear! Fringe occasionally suffers from bland acting as well, but at least the plot and premises are somewhat original, and it doesn't take itself so seriously. I'm done with Heroes whether it comes back or not, and I've dropped Dollhouse as well--no matter how much ironic distance you impose with the premise, it's still primarily an excuse to leer at Hollywood actresses, to an extent that even a dirty old man like myself finds creepy.

I need to start watching real t.v. again, the only shows I watch are ones that are put online...I have no clue what you guys are talking about. Fringe? Dollhouse?

I'm not sure if I remember Nathan being brought back before, but Noah, Claires adopted father, was shot in the head and completely dead until they pumped him full of Claire's blood. He came back with the same "holy ----" expression that Claire did when she first died.

I might check those shows out sometime.

I forgot all about Noah... so that's twice that Claires blood was used for it's healing capabilities. In the one with Nathan I **think** her blood restored his health to before he was severely burned.

I will admit when Peter jumped Sylar at the end was pretty good. But that was like the only good part. I can't help thinking that whole Hiro's head thing was was just because their budget got cut and the can't afford to do as many time freeze scenes. Or any other special effects other than a few glowy hands once in awhile, they probably got a bulk discount. Except for Sylar or course, he doesn't need the glowy hands, he can use his other low budget powers. "Hey, I'm Sylar! Check out my invisible force!"

I agree with The Cusp. It's just not as good without the special effects. I partially agree with Zhaylin, bad special effects should be left out. Thing is, the special effects were awesome. I've got all 60 episodes on my pc, and it's not very cool to see how to show has detoriated. Not only in special effects, but also in storyline.

Even though the storyline has become better in volume IV, it's not the same with the special effects. They had to get rid of those because of the budget cuts, because volume II sucked so badly, making the beginning of volume III suck too. Basically, if the writers wouldn't have protested and had written volume II as it should have been, we would have our special effects and a great storyline ;)

Why do people keep saying volumes 2 and three sucked? I liked them both... :P

Another welfare FX they overused is Parkman's mind control. OOOoooo, I'm bunching up my brow, squinting, that means I'm controlling you with my mind!

I can just see the next low budget character. "The Clapper", he claps he hands twice which knocks people out and they fall down. Which reminds me, baby touch and go? I'm surprised they could afford the "ON" switches to pull off those spectacular effects.

I doubt the morphing effect they used for Sylar was cheap. It's easily the most technical effect they've used in a long time.

It's more a matter of taste, I guess. It's just that the volumes lacked the power and the feel the first volume had, IMO. :P

Any half-decent animation program can do all of the effects that we see on Heroes. So seamlessly morphing faces, the way they do it on the show, is probably harder to do than a large portion of the effects we've ever seen them do.

In still-frame ink, yes. In live-action film, no. How often have you ever seen telekinesis or telepathy in film depicted with glowing energy?

well, this volume was LEAPS AND BOUNDS better than "Villains" (ugh, i gag when i think about that volume) and I'd probably say that this was better than volume two as well.

I really liked a lot of aspects about it. Everything always seemed generally connected (considering they were fighting the government)

Did the season finale twist annoy me? Yes. But hopefully the show can garner viewers in this, their fourth season. They can take it in so many different directions, and I'm such a fanatic, I really want it to do well!

I haven't watched it. Is it worth it? I think it was either season 3 or the first few episodes of 4 that made me give up on Heroes all together. UGH, gag.

I gave up a few episodes ago, but I'd say your early assessment was spot on. There are moments here and there that make you hope they'll do better, but generally...they don't :P

Fringe has way more satisfying comic book-y shenanigans (more Vertigo than Marvel), and while the acting is a bit uneven there, too, at least the cast has chemistry and the writers aren't taking themselves so seriously.

Making Nathan come back to life through Sylar was the only cool thing in the finale. Although the excuse they used for doing it was lol:
"I guess we could use Peter's shapeshifting and Parkman's mind powers to make people believe Nathan died from a normal accident... But let's just have this extremely dangerous guy that we finally caught live as Nathan!"

And Hiro's ability: First the writers decided he was too powerful so they took his power away, then they regretted it and conveniently had him recover just part of his power. Then they realised Hiro was still overpowered, so they decided that for no reason he was going have nosebleeds and die if he abused his ability. And while I'm talking about convenient power changes, how convenient is it that when Peter took the formula, of all the possible abilities to get, he ended up with a never-before-seen power that's very similar to his original power but less powerful?

Sylar's wild personality swings are funny, too. First he's bad, then it's just his hunger for power that makes him bad so he tries to be good and falls in love with Elle, then for no reason he's bad again and kill's his lover (even though he has her power already), but right in next episode he doesn't kill Peter just because he has no powers for him to take (lolwut). Then in the last episode it turns out he wants love again and so starts making some moves on Claire. Lol.

I'm not even going to ask how Peter and Nathan didn't die seconds after they entered the room with Sylar. Heroes magic.

I'm not gonna complain too much since I am I fan of the show, but everything Scatterbrain said is indeed true. (sadly)

For those who still care, I can predict what's gonna happen next.

Noah and Claire will move to a place in Arizona, after Noah's divorce with Sandra. (who will possibly stay in CV)
He will be working for "the company" again, thid time under government control.
Sylar will begin realising that he is Sylar again, and kill everybody who knows that he knows (:P) - as in the episode "Five Years Gone" Angela was nowhere to be seen.
Matt and Janice will, sadly, not be together again. Or perhaps they will, but Matt will become way too occupied with his new job at Homeland security.
He probably joined them because he had to "pick a side" after "someone" (probably Peter/Sylar) blew up a mayor city (yes, I think it's STILL gonna happen) probably DC or NY.
Ando will not survive the blast.
Hiro and Peter will become freedom fighters.
