well.... i honestly hate most reality shows, but some i dont mind watching...
i watched "next" for a while, and i think the chef jeff project is pretty cool.
WTF??? I feal bad for anyone who watches a reality tv show with their time.
and thats no exageration, I truely feal bad for you.
because its mainstream media BS, and most of it these days is acted out.
Also, you usually end up watching the most uninteresting people and everyone on set is constantly drunk or talking "She said, He said BS". If I wanted to watch reality TV, I could walk down to my old high school or elementary school. What else do they talk about? oh idk, forming alliances, how drunk to get, past times of sex. Being fake just like they would in the real world.
Or maybe watch celebrity rock stars talk about the same exact sh!t except with the extended ego.
I wish I could laugh these kind of shows off, but really its sad for a number of reasons: the people, and the people watching these people are whats keeping these stupid shows alive! either way, both parties are going to be stupid. There is no intellect, or brain candy or things to think about.
No gain can come from it other than thinking "I wish I was on this show. What would I do if I was on this show? IDK IDK".
There is a reason why scientists don't bother studying these people, because you can find 10 times more interesting alcoholics who are bums!!!
Although I agree with some of what you said, I think you're going a bit overboard. It's called "Entertainment," and - as anyone without an elitist mindset will tell you - not all forms of entertainment have to be mentally stimulating. Some people enjoy the drama. Period. Does that mean these people are stupid? No. Does that mean these don't partake in plenty of other mentally stimulating forms of entertainment? No. It means that they enjoy watching a reality show or so. Anyone who automatically assumes otherwise is wearing their ignorance on their sleeve.
That being said, I believe that most of the reality shows out there are trash (in my own perspective), because of many of the other reasons you stated.
But, anyway...let's see...reality shows I like: (I'm barely the kind of guy that catches every episode of anything, but these are some that I at least enjoy watching.)
Most Shocking (It's amazing to see some of the things that go on in this crazy world.)
Most Daring (Same as Most Shocking)
So You Think You Can Dance (I love to dance, and respect the talent and dedication that goes into these competitions)
American Idol (Same as SYTYCD, but with singing instead of dancing. I love to see how the potential stars prove themselves against the competition.)
The Ultimate Fighter (Don't watch it very much, but I check it out every now and then. I love all things MMA, and this show is pretty exciting.)
America's Best Dance Crew (Same reason as SYTYCD)
The Pick-up Artist (Good reference. Haha.)
Cheaters (There is something about me that just loves to see cheaters get what they deserve.)
Moment of Truth (It never ceases to amaze me, the things people will do for money.)
MTV Cribs (I love many of the the designs that people - who can afford them - have in their homes.)
Fear Factor (Just good fun)
Chris Angel: Mindfreak (Kickass illusionist)
Mythbusters (One of the most interesting shows on television)
Smash Lab (Kinda like mythbusters second cousin. Pretty cool show with lots of stuff getting destroyed)
Most Extreme Elimination Challenge (Hil-fucking-arious)
Survivorman (Words cannot describe how awesome this show is.)
Man vs. Wild (Much like survivorman)
Cops (Who doesn't love watching Cops?)
America's Wildest Police Videos (Much like Cops, Most Shocking and Most Daring)
Uh...that's all I can think of for now.
Adding Punk'd and Scare Tactics to the above list. Badass pranks, FTW.
Excuse me, I got "reality TV shows" confused with "RealWorld type reality TV shows" like Flavor of Love, Big Brother, etc, etc.
That said, I still think most of it is still BS, because the media is always going to be filming the same kind of people and censoring everything else interesting.
Cops films "The bad guys" (down to earth people) getting arrested. Just another scare tactic (not the show)
American Idol winners are not that good and lack timing to sing to Jazz songs or real music. They only know pop music. (and you thought I was biased)
Ahhhh!!! Reviewing this list reminded me about shows I HAVE to catch up on!! Moment of Truth for one.
btw, I had no idea you were into the pickup artist :cooler: final ep. comes on tonight in about 40 min. I had high hopes for Greg but I think now that he's eliminated, Simeon's got this in the bag.
Mythbusters
The Mole (Oh god, such a amazing show, get back in season!!!!)
American Idol (The first round is so helarious)
Dylan, it's one thing to share your opinion and quite another to try to vomit on the opinions of others. So far you've said your piece and a bit more beside, and I would greatly appreciate it if your comments were more constructive. Thank you.
I enjoy watching a number of "reality shows" where they show real people in real situations where they're not simply acting (ie. Mythbusters, Man vs. Wild, etc.), but I'm definitely more selective when it comes to "reality game shows." I have an inclination that a number of them are rigged, but usually that doesn't make a difference. It's good entertainment for me.
I avoid anything "Real World"-esque like the plague. There's only so much yelling and screaming and "I don't like you any more!" that I can take... usually filled up in about a half of an episode. I do enjoy [b]The Amazing Race, some seasons of Survivor and (see below).
I loved that show when it first came out, but once they threw celebrities in there it just ruined it for me. I didn't get to see this last season (I assume it's over now), but I might go back and watch some of it to see if they went back to when it was actually good.
They're more enjoyable if I watch them from the beginning and know what's happened as the season progressed. It depends.
constructive...uhh...make art! drama! create interesting situations and dynamics and meat new and interesting people (not like the cut outs you see in The Mole)
I actually agree with this one. And the same goes for all shows in general, it's all blown way out of proportion.
I generally don't consume reality TV, but I will flip through MTV or VH1 from time to time when channel surfing.....
Real Chance at Love has some smoking hot girls, so I will definitely watch it if I happen to stumble upon it.
Ah....America's Best Dance Crew. But all I really cared about was the JabbaWockeez from the 1st Season, and I just youtubed all their performances. :D
Last season diden't have any celebrities in it, and because it's a remake it has a new host (who i like better then the old one) and all revamped stuff.
Ames, Mythbusters is an incredible show. Sometimes before they get into the actual myths to bust I think to myself..."Okay that myth sounds really dumb...I bet these guys really know the outcome of this myth but just try to stay objective for the camera". I'm like that with about 80% of the myths they try and bust. I love the show nevertheless. :P
I'm ecstatic that they won, I was rooting for them the entire time. Irregardless of how good everyone else was...the Jabba's had a certain swagger about them that forced them to stand out from everyone else. Besides that, I think their "Superman flying" illusion was THE best. It dumbfounded one of the judges :P
Yeah....the stretch Superman, right??? That was siiiiiiiiiiick, dude.
Honestly, though, the masks and the gloves gave them an edge. Some people give them crap for it, but really, I give them props for actually deciding to use them in the first place. :goodjob: Apparently, nobody else thought of using the same idea.
I agree! Even if their methods aren't scientifically "kosher" so to speak, they make a very entertaining show. You learn a few things as well in the process, so it's all good. There's also something to be said for the "If it doesn't work out, call it quits and blow it up" philosophy :D
Now, would you consider game/quiz shows to be "reality TV"? I know that Jeopardy (which I love!) and Survivor aren't the same, but it's still people on a show, solving "puzzles" and hoping to win a prize at the end. I don't care much for The Price is Right any more, but I was able to go to one of the shows and be in the audience (and watch a friend win a car) and it was SOOO much fun! Surprisingly, those stages are tiny! [/tangent]
Oh, and I'll admit that on my lunch hour, my mom and I usually watch What Not to Wear. :D I don't like the hair and makeup portion, though, because my mom thinks I should change my hairstyle and I'm perfectly fine with my low-maintenance coiffure.
How is it a scare tactic? Seem like you're the only one scared if you think so...
This is also not true; there are PLENTY of classics that are sung by the contestants. Quite well, I might add. Some are even remade and put on CDs. Idol contestants and winners are big in the music industry right now. Ever heard of Carrie Underwood, Clay Aiken, Chris Daughtry? I wouldn't call then pop at ALL. You must have never had a decent chorus class in your life, because all I hear out of these Idols are wonderful voices that make them worthy of being this popular. And they can sing LIVE. Name me a recent Artist that can do that.
People do this both on TV and in real like and say otherwise...well, is just dumb.
I agree with Star, but I'll say it bluntly; make posts worth reading. Thank you.
ANYWAY, I'm a Court TV junkie. So all the CTV shows O named I LOVE. (Most Shocking, Most Daring, Wildest Police Videos.) I've only seen Mythbusters and Mindfreak once, but they were awesome all the same! SYTYCD and Idol are great to (ESPECIALLY auditions), and my mom and I are big fans of Dancing with the Stars. (But I HATED this year's winner)
