Well, it seems China may be in some shit now.

The International Olympic Committee has ordered an investigation into the age of Chinese gymnast He Kexin, The Times of London reports. Faced with almost insurmountable evidence which suggests that He is two years younger than the birth date listed on her Chinese passport, the IOC has launched an inquiry that could result in the stripping of He's gold medals.

This news comes on the heels of another Times report that details the findings of a New York computer security expert who found official Chinese documents that list He's age as 14 years and 220 days. Mike Walker used a Chinese search engine's cache feature to find He's actual date of birth on spreadsheets from a Chinese government website. The spreadsheets were taken down off the site recently and He's name had been removed.

Assuming the IOC is committed to a real investigation and not some dog and pony show, the revelation that the Chinese government covered up the ages of gymnasts could end up being the defining moment of these Games for the host country. Officials wanted the Olympics to be a coming out party for a new China. But while the Games have been a huge success, there is a legitimate possibility that China's legacy from Beijing '08 will be that of a massive government cover-up, not the magical Opening Ceremony or the transformation of Beijing or anything else positive.

All the good work China did to put on these Olympics could be forgotten because of an unnecessary, arrogant move by the government. Why risk everything to put a 14-year old in the competition when they could have replaced her with an of-age 16-year old gymnast? Sure, He is a better gymnast than the Chinese gymnasts who were eligible to compete, but with the judges they had at the Olympics, would it really have mattered?
Seriously, look at the girl. She doesn't even look 14 to me. I'd guess about 10, if even that.

Er, yeah. I posted a reply to this yesterday but it vanished.

Essentially I said that taking away one person's gold medals is not punishment enough. They need to take away the whole team's medals, and then some. I really hope they do.

BTW what is the source of that quote? I have a problem with the way it was written.. sounds a little unprofessional.

I totally agree. That little girl didn't forge her own documents, wipe the bogus ones off their government's websites, etc. The whole team (coaches, gymnasts, etc.) were in on the cheat. She should not take the fall for everyone!!

If they do strip the entire team of their medals that would send a strong well needed message about what will be tolerated in future olympic games.

I sadly get the feeling that it is all just "lip service" (the IOC felt that they HAD to say something).. and I wonder if any real "punishment" will ever actually take place.

It was on yahoo, I don't remember the link though.

IOC, though, is apparently the organization that tried to cover up her age in the first place, according to another yahoo story I had read.

Yes, I stated in the other Olympic thread the exact same thing. I'll be entering the game were you ski and shoot at targets with a M203 grenade launcher for the U.S., hope to see you all there.

It does matter. Cuz China still has more gold medals, right? That's what counts in the end.

OH MY GOD!!! I can't hardly believe that.. and when they showed it in slow motion and you could see the break.

I thought it was interesting how they had people immediately run up and blocked the camera's views. I wonder if they always have them at the ready in case something like this happens.

I think the slow motion was completely unnecessary, I mean, I think we already saw it break one-too many times!

I also found that strange/disturbing when they blocked the camera. I know they had a job to do but it was like they had no emotional reaction whatsoever towards that incident. I, personally, would have been in shock from the guy's screams alone.

Agreed.. even the women holding the blocking "sacks" showed no emotion at all as he screamed and rolled around behind them. I wonder if they had been "warned" that they shouldn't..

Good point, that's the only view I wanted to see, if any.

They must've been. At first, I thought they were running to his aid but... I was wrong.

Well, why should they try to help him? That's for the trainers to do. Their job is to respect his privacy, which they did.

Also, ouch. I'm surprised that doesn't happen more often, though, considering the incredible stress they're putting on their bodies.

Well, as a human, Id expect some type of help from people nearby, even if it was little comforting words like,"everything's going to be alright, you're going to be ok, etc." Im mean situations like that cause a lot of shock and trauma; like I said before: I know its their job and everything... But when anybody's going through shock like that any type of help would be more-than-greatly appreciated by them.

This is coming from first hand experience if you know what Im saying.

It's just a broken elbow, jeez. It's not like he's dieing. He's a grown man.

And I've broken my arm once, so you can't say that I don't have 'experience'. But even so, why should that matter? It's just a bloody break, and it's a risk of the sport. Why mollycoddle him?
