The best solo ever, is from Floods by Pantera. About 3:50 in, it really shows how much emotion Dime could put into his playing. Here it is live, by it self too (link).

I better stop after this post or the next thing I know I am going to have posted about 100 of them. Check out Ace Frehley in this 1975 Kiss performance.

This is Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young at the Big Sur Folk Festival of 1969. Neil Young plays a damn good guitar solo during a jam. Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez were on fire at that festival too, in case anybody is interested.

Erm? Thats not much of a guitar solo song. I mean its a great song, one of my favourite songs actually, but its not powerful for guitar solos

      Improv Hendrix Star Spangled Banner.
Some think it is crap. You have to know the story too.
And to just go off on some far out jam and come back to where he elft off. Just awesome.

I am biased to Alice in Chains, So many of Jerry Cantrell's solos are incredable.

Definitely one of the best, i actually find myself skipping forward to the solo rather than listening to the full track. I really should cut out the beginning as the solo is the best part to that track.

Mind you, what i don't like is how some people will say that a certain solo is the best simply because everyone says they are. I mean its just like when you ask who the best guitarist was, the typical answer to those who are unknowing is Jimi Hendrix, he wasn't even that good IMO, sure he was a great guitarist, he could play well, but his music wasn't the best, he had a few one hit wonders, but in terms of better i would happily say that The Beatles were much better than him, after all they were pioneers of their time and though it was inevitable that music would go this way eventually, they did lay down a strong foundation which resulted in all these genres we have today.

So to those who say things for the sake of it, music is what you make it, try listening to a track instead of just assuming its good because everyone else thinks so.

      Freebird is some epic soloage.

I don't really have many that come to mind, but one i must mention is Manhattan by Eric Johnson. Not only is the guitar work delicious, but that freaking tone is orgasmic.

The Hendrix solo I posted is what I think is the greatest display of musical talent there has ever been. It blows my mind. I have never come across a guitar solo that could even compete with it. I don't know whom exactly you are saying lists Hendrix just to be copy cats, but it is a fact the he impresses the Hell out of his fans. He really was a total badass.

I became a Hendrix fan twenty years ago. Since then, I have learned that the general consensus among classic rock musicians is that Hendrix is not only the best there has ever been but also hands down the greatest guitarist of all time without question. Neil Young said Hendrix is "absolutely the best guitar player that ever lived" and, "There is nobody even in the same building with that guy." Before Hendrix got famous, Eric Clapton acted really strange and asked Pete Townshend to walk into an uncrowded movie theater with him to talk. When they sat down, Clapton finally said what it was bout. He told Townshend that there was a guy who was about to put both of them out of business. Eric Clapton vanished from the music scene for a while because he felt so overshadowed by Jimi Hendrix. Roger Daltrey, the lead singer of The Who, said Hendrix is the greatest guitarist of all time. I don't think people say Hendrix is the greatest because all of those other people say he is the best or because so many of their friends and peers do. There is obviously something to the idea, and the fact that it is true has a lot of people noticing it.

I am more of a Beatles fan than a Hendrix fan. However, Hendrix was a much better guitar player than George Harrison. Though Jimi Hendrix could sing well and had good musicians playing with him, he (Experience, Band of Gypsies) was a very guitar centered musical act. The Beatles were phenomenal for a whole list of reasons.

By the way, make sure you see the Woodstock clip I posted. It might convince you.

I never disputed the fact that Hendrix was a good guitarist, i think he was an excellent guitarist, but just because he was one of the best of his time doesn't mean he is the best of all time. That rules out all other guitarists at the time and that is quite unfair since a lot of different artists were good in their own ways. Jimi Hendrix was good, he was recognized as a great guitarist, but if you compare his music to a lot that was being produced at the time, there was stuff coming out that was way more popular than Jimi's material.

Oh, and the improvisation he pulled off. Being a guitar player myself of the same style, i know that improvisations are easy once you get good at them. Most improvisations are off the top of the head, but i could tell that a lot of the material he had must have been practiced before. Notice how he divided it into sections, don't get me wrong, it WAS an improvisation, but a lot of it sounded like material and riffs he had played about with, then he just incorporated and improvised around them. He did pull some complex riffs and soloing out there, but its easy to replicate if you have a lot of good material to use when improvising. And lets face it, coming up with something complex that sounds good is fairly easy nowadays. I'm not saying i could do better, but i know for a fact that others out there could even back then. The advantage Jimi had was his moment of popularity, but to be honest, like a lot of artists back then, he too was short winded and didn't last too long in the mainstage area of the public eye.

I am beginning to dislike Jimi Hendrix because of the sheer fact that he is worshipped as the best guitarist ever, when in reality he is not. There are probably way better guitarists out there than Jimi Hendrix in terms of ability, because at the end of the day, the one thing Jimi did have was exclusivity and opportunity. Many people don't have that luxury, but if they did, i think Jimi would have been out-staged pretty quickly.

But though a large majority think that Jimi was the best guitarist of all time, that doesn't mean that he was the best guitarist of all time, consider all the guitar players out there now and the varying ability.

What impresses me so much about the improvisation isn't really that is was an improvisation. It is just that what he played was so phenomenal. Also, I don't think his popularity proves that he was the greatest. It is the fact that the other greatests say he was the greatest, along with the fact that he impresses me the most. Think about how incredible somebody has to be to make Eric Clapton feel like somebody made him his bitch. But really, there is a major element of subjectivity in there along with the objectivity. When it comes to saying who is the greatest, there are objective matters involved such as whether other people could learn to play the same stuff in the same ways, but as for how good it is overall artistically, we can't get around the fact that at the end of the day it really comes down to opinion.

You can have some good laughs watching other people on You Tube trying to play Jimi's "Woodstock Improvisation". It is like watching elementary school kids on BMX bikes trying to recreate an Evel Knievel jump. I think the dichotomy there is one thing that illustrates just how high level Jimi's performance of it is.

YouTube videos do not disprove that there is no talent out there. There are some perfect examples of recreations of great songs by YouTube members.

Of course, it is opinion based very much, but at the end of the day, there is no *best guitarist ever*. We all vary in talent and style, but just because Jimi could get his style and playing across better than others does not mean that he is the best guitarist of all time, that is surely biased because then you are excluding guitarists of other genres.

I think Hendrix is one of the greatest. Great skill, great improv...mindblowing, actually. Not the top technical player, though. But i'd rather have soul than just shred with no meaning

My favorites are j. mascis of dinosaur jr., followed by billy corgan of smashing pumpkins (not so apparent on some of the pumpkins more popular songs, but still very good). like i said, these are my personal favorites, not necessarily the most technically skilled players as far as know - j. mascis is regarded as something special though, i believe.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6WLkyxySA0 - dinosaur jr., forget the swan (solo around 4:38).

let me know what you guys think.

I could make a huge list and most would be Dream Theater but I'll just say my top 3 favorite solos of all time

      1. Rain Song (ending solo) - Troy Stetina
      2. Voices -Dream Theater (John Petrucci)
      3. Comfortably Numb (ending solo) -Pink Floyd (David Gilmour)

I love troy stetina but hes not known very much unless you play guitar.

Heres a link where it has the solo I'm talking about as a sound file, its under the cd "Set the World on Fire"

      http://www.stetina.com/music.html
