      Favourite Covers..

      On a UK radio phone-in the other day, they were having a discussion about cover versions of famous songs. The school of thought in the studio was generally that bands/singers should not cover songs, because they always fail to live up to the standard of the original song. This got me thinking, and I came to the conclusion that they were wrong.. that there were some exceptions to this "rule". So.. in no particular order, here are three covers that I rate just as much as the originals:

      Aretha Franklin "Bridge over Troubled Water" (Simon & Garfunkel);

      Jeff Beck " 'Cause we've ended as lovers" (Stevie Wonder);

      Richie Havens "Here comes the Sun" (Beatles).

      Anyone out there agree/disagree? Should cover versions even exist? Anyone else got any favourites?

      Come Together - Aerosmith

      They added something the song needed: A solo!

      "Down With The Sickness", Disturbed -> Richard Cheese

      Or "Darling Nikki", Prince -> Foo Fighters
      I am posting on topic elsewhere for the most part.

      I only usually like cover songs if they completely change the genre

      I love covers when they completely change the song, yet it is as good as the original (or better.)

      Train in Vain - Clash/Dwight Yoakum

      Tainted Love - Some 50's Girl group?/Soft Cell/(Marilyn Manson)

      You Really Got Me Down - Kinks/Van Halen

      Pretty Woman - Roy Orbison/Van Halen

      Blue Bayou - Roy Orbison/Linda Ronstadt

      Walk this Way - Aerosmith/Run DMC

      Roll Over Beethoven - Chuck Berry/Electric Light Orchestra

      I like the cover album Acid Eaters by the Ramones (classic rock punk-style), and Dred Zeppelin (Led Zeppelin sung by a Reggae band with an Elvis impersonator as the lead singer) but those are probably not considered that great by most people.

      I really love how much Yellowcard changed "Everywhere" by Michell Branch. I almost feels like that is how the song should have been.

      also, who doesnt love AAF's remake of "Smooth Criminal" by Micheal Jackson?

      2nd on the Gimmes.

      I'd have to say Victor Wooten's cover of the Beatles Norwegian Wood (This Bird has Flown)

      There is a good cover of the Suicidal Tendencies song "Institutionalized" by a band called Black Velvet Flag.

      This isn't a cover, but the re-recording of Dream On by Aerosmith for Guitar Hero 3. It makes the song actually sound like Steven Tyler's singing it.
