Oh wow...that does look cool! I'll be looking forward to see that! |

The first one was a great "don't-take-it-too-seriously" flick. This one actually looks to be even better or, at least, of the same quality, which is good enough for me. |

Looks great! can't wait to see it. I hardly even remember the first one. I'm going to have to watch it again before watching the new one. |

Ok, I enjoyed the first Hellboy and I am loving the sequel's trailer.. this is a definate must see!! |
|
Hellboy was one of, if not the best of the comic-book superhero films. It didn't get the publicity it deserved in my opinion though. I liked it because Hellboy didn't pretend to be some kind of martial arts wizard who could slow down time and all that jazz. He was just a devil-thing with a massive stone fist, who liked kittens and cigars. |

And he was cool and stuff! |

Having really liked the comic books, I was not a big fan of the film. Guillermo del Toro got Catholicism all over it |

If you have a sense of caring for others, you will manifest a kind of inner strength in spite of your own difficulties and problems. With this strength, your own problems will seem less significant and bothersome to you. By going beyond your own problems and taking care of others, you gain inner strength, self-confidence, courage, and a greater sense of calm.Dalai Lama
She died but Hellboy brought her back to life by saying to the dead bad guy (somehow) that "If she dies I'll pass over for her and then you'll be sorry". So she comes back to life and then happy ending all round. |

Hellboy 1 was also directed by del Toro, and it just ripped off the imagery of the comic books to tell an unrelated story about an angsty teenager framed by Christian allegory. The great humor and the intertextual approach to folklore in the comic books were replaced with action-movie one-liners and high school drama. |

I haven't seen Hellboy... I should get on that. |

I'm sure it's partly just the catch 22 of seeing a movie based on a text you love--it will almost never live up to the original. Still, the Hellboy comics were groundbreaking in their way, and the movie just seemed trite. Maybe I'll check it out again for a fresh take, but a big part of the greatness of the comic book was its light, tongue-in-cheek approach combined with Mignola's erudition on the folklore. The darkness of the comic books was studied and self-deprecating, whereas the movie seemed to pander to the over-earnest "I'm so hard and dark" demographic. Making an action movie based on Hellboy is like making a slasher film of Johnny the Homicidal Maniac--it just misses the point, by a lot. |
