FMA's fight scenes were barely 10 minutes at the longest (Lab 5 arc) and then they went back to story.

Story >> giant fight scenes. Also, it has to have some sort of goal in the end that it's going towards. I didn't see one in Bleach. At least Naruto finally got one after a while. DBZ had none. One Piece didn't seem to have one, either, though correct me if I'm wrong. To be honest, Host Club didn't have one at the start but it became evident after a while, especially in the manga.

What can I say? I like something well-written over bloody and blech.

      /writestoomuchaboutanime/

I don't know, i guess it depends on what you mean by goal. Because even DBZ had a goal and some sort of story (however cliche it might've been) behind the fighting. To stop the bad guys from destroying the world. And i don't think you're giving bleach the credit it deserves. I mean sure there's a lot of fighting but there is alot more evolution in the fighting then there was in DBZ. And in my opinion there is a pretty decent storyline to go along with it.

Lol Tek Jansen and Alpha Squad 7 is hilarious, although i don't think I'd call it anime.

It wasn't a "real" goal, though. "To keep bad guys from destroying the world" is a short-term goal - because the series went on and on. They killed the bad guys, then new, stronger ones came back. In FMA they had these short-term goals but had their own long-term goal (to restore their bodies, to stop the homunculi) . Most of the long-term shonen anime are like this, riddled with short-term goals without a solid plan for the future. Something that would work would be a giant criminal organization that is sending group after group. Your short-term goal is to destroy that group, but then the long term is to destroy the organization. It's called story depth.

Not that it's bad to have these short-term arcs, but a lot of these endless shows focus too much on the short-term and not enough on how it affects their long-term goals.

Of course, I'm not saying that shonen is the only one that does this. A lot of series / manga start off without a real goal in the end, and then the circumstances create a final goal. The most important thing is a story that has lots of small arcs that help create the overall arc. And the show automatically fails if its overall arc completes and they start another one for another 200+ episodes. =_=

I'm just a bitch on this matter. Continue.

hmm I can see your point, and I can actually agree to some point. But Bleach still hasn't gotten to the point for me yet where it is annoyingly lagging on and on, perhaps because I like the story of the arcs and that they still fit together to a degree, at least the original ones, I wasn't a big fan of the Bounto arc, and not to sure about this new one that just started, but those are just filler.

I'm not so sure about Bleach lately, the last episode confused the hell out of [the intro and end thing seemed to be about completely random shit]. Did it catch up to the Manga and needs filler now?

Yeah there's filler right now, im assuming your watching the japanese series right? The last episode was the beginning of The New Captain arc or something like that. I not to sure about it either I'll just have to wait and see whether or not I like it.

Hey hyperangel13 I was hoping you could help me out with something. I just recently downloaded The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzuyima. I noticed you said that this was an anime that you had already watched. While I was looking into it on Wikipedia it said that the episode was aired out of order. Before I start watching i was wondering if you think one would enjoy it better watching it in the order it was aired or the actual order. Thanks.

Yes I am watching the New captain arc, thank you, I suppose it could be interesting, I just hope it's better than the bounto arc = /

EDIT-Btw I just noticed that you mentioned it was filler on the post right above where I asked, sorry for asking a stupid question...

Yeah me too, I mean I didn't dislike the bounto arc, i just didn't like it. BTW do you know of any fansubbers who have done the new Bleach movie: The Diamonddust Rebellion yet, I've been waiting for it since like January and have no idea when Dattebayo is gonna sub it.

No one has mentioned Furi Kuri?! Shame!

Neon Genesis Evangelion (series/manga), End of Evangelion - favorite by far. Gendo Ikari is awesome.
Death Note - closely-tied second favorite. Light and L are awesome.
Ghost in the Shell (movie and series)
      FLCL
      Paranoia Agent
      Cowboy Bebop
Akira (working on getting the manga)
      s-CRY-ed
      Gundam Wing
      Samurai Champloo

The most notable works that I've seen, that I can remember off hand, at any rate.

Watch it in broadcast order (i.e., out of chronological order). It'll make a TON more sense.

I just finished watching Air. It was beautiful and the animation and music were fantastic. It was a great show all together, thought a bit of a tear-jerker at times (especially the last episode). Only 12 episodes long, but be prepared for each episode being a cliff-hanger.

      6. Ruruoni Kenshin
      5. Yuyu Hakushu (bleach copied the shit out of this)
      4. 1st season of Pokemon (you gotta admit)
      3. Samurai Champloo (would be number one if it satisfied me. Too short and soo good!)
      2. Gungrave (unexpected ownage anime)
      1. DBZ (up to cell arc) (I don't really consider DBZ to be in the same list. Its epic/action anime.)

Any girls out there watching Vampire Knight at the moment? It's only on its 3rd episode, but I've read some of the manga, and the show looks promising.

(It's a shojo about vampires and the like, so guys probably won't like it. But you can always take a shot <3 )

Oh, and anyone (in general) do anime cons?

FMA is a brilliant piece of work. It had a good strong solid main plot, wit smaller subplots involving both antagonists and protangists, and the character development involved was top notch, all around. Almost every character have had some sort of character development. Even characters introduced for a small portion of one episode is developed to add even more poignancy into the story.

Agreed, I watched YYH back when I was a wee middleschooler watching Toonami. Bleach is blech.

What I've seen of Bleach reminds me too much of every other generic shonen action anime. You know, where there's some guy with a huge sword walking around with some dumb useless chick for whatever reason, and then they come across some bad guy (usually with a scar or black-rimmed eyes or some other evil trope) who has an even bigger sword (these huge swords are phallic references, it would seem ;\) and the hero and villain stand for twenty minues in a battle-ready pose talking back and forth (the girl usually stands off to the side providing useless commentary). Next episode, the hero and villain fight using generic earth-shattering techniques that have to be verbally called out to use. Usually the hero loses the first battle and goes off to some remote desert to "train" for a few hours, trying to unlock the SUPER-MEGA ULTRONIC BANKAI KAMEHAHMEHA GOD-KILLING SPIRIT ATTACK/TRANSFORMATION TECHNIQUE. After ten or so episodes of training while the useless wench provides some forgettable sideplot filler, he unlocks the tech, goes back, and annihilates the bad guy.

      Repeat ad infinitum.

Gee, sounds like the latter parts of DBZ and all of InuYasha, doesn't it?

DBZ was terrible. They could spend a WHOLE episode with this guy charging up a super attack, it was almost laughable.

And their fight sequences could easily last 10 episodes or more. Ridiculous.

Shame really. Dragonball(The Original Series) was a humorous parody of sorts of the Legend of the Stone Monkey(Sun Wu Kong) and it was good tv.

Then suddenly all the mysticism gets out of the show, and it goes totally sci-fi, aliens, superfast ships, super omniscience villains who are close to invincible start invading the show. And add in super powerful beings from the future and everything gets really screwed up. The story arcs become dull and predictable with so many stupid fight sequences, and stuff exploding, the terrain blasted to bits etc.

Anyways, FMA is in my opinion, one of the best Animes ever. Simply for it's thriller/suspense/drama/investigative detective/action/political plot and great potrayal of characters. They don't just put out typical evil and good characters. The characters are all too human - flawed antagonists and protanganists who are shown to struggle through their decisions. In FMA, Scar, The Elric Brothers, The Homnuculi, even Dante and Holmeinhem, all were very well developed characters. Also second tier characters like the military: Roy Mustang, Riza Hawkeye, Maria Ross and Denny Brosh were not just screen filler. They were developed more and more each time they appeared on screen. There are many more characters and themes that the FMA producers developed, like Shou Tucker and the religous war on Ishbal. The two lead characters were constantly evolving, showing to struggle with their decisions, to doubt, to question, to succum to the Homunculi etc.
Basically, the FMA anime series, was not just a typical show which the good guys have to go on a quest to beat the bad guys.

It was a great story of humanity, a wonderful piece of televised literature, with a whole host of realistic believable characters, and the 'feel' of the era, the place, the entire world in which the show is located in. The political tensions, the military set-up, the entire style of that period, the whole STATE of the world, and 2 brothers on an epic journey, with many perils and friends/allies, confused/misunderstood villains, all intewoven into a great piece of literature.

The only anime in recent times that I feel have come anywhere close to matching FMA is Avatar, but even then it's character development pales in comparism to FMA, which I believe without a shadow of a doubt is the greatest anime story ever told.

      It was really that brilliant.

THANK YOU. For stating in better words what I couldn't. :3

@ Hitzlsperger: FMA was great, one of the best out there, and the English dub was one of the best dubs, too. The only thing I hated about it was the ending. 3:<

Cyborg 009, I freakin' loved that show when it was on Toonami. So long long ago.

Haha gotta download Gundam 00, giant robots ftw.

If 100 episodes of Seed didn't tire me, no amount of Gundam will.
