      Radiohead announce "In Rainbows"

This is 4 days old news but since there was no thread about it I decided to create one.

The best band in the world has announced their new album name and release date. "In Rainbows" we'll be released online on October 10th, without any label.

Also, the buyer chooses the price, even if zero. A kick in the teeth for RIAA and friends I guess.

I like a lot of radiohead songs...they have crazy good music videos to ("Just" in particular). There songs are bit too depressing for me to listen all the time =S

I'll definently be checking out in rainbows though...=D
Maybe, just for a second, you'll be awestruck.
      ...do you feel it to?

Estimates: Radiohead Made $6-$10 Million on Initial Album Sales

Thom Yorke's representative told me that the band have "decided not to give out any figures" for sales of Radiohead's In Rainbows album, but that isn't stopping people from making their best guesses based on what little information is available.

The Seminal estimates that Radiohead sold about $10 million-worth of albums as of 10/12, assuming that their source was correct that approximately 1.2 million people downloaded the album from the site, and that the average price paid per album was $8 (we heard that number too, but also heard that a later, more accurate average was $5, which would result in $6 million in revenue instead).

Meanwhile, Forbes and BigChampagne revealed that on the first day the album was available, approximately 240K people downloaded it for free over BitTorrent, and that over the following days, an average of 100K people per day did the same, for a total of over 500K BitTorrent downloads of In Rainbows over the initial week of its release. It appears that even though the album was available for free on InRainbows.com, plenty of people preferred to use BitTorrent rather than Radiohead's site, which required an email registration (although some of those BitTorrent downloads may have been the result of slowdowns on the InRainbows site).

We're working on getting some sales numbers through another channel, and will post those if/when we can.

I stayed up late on the night of the 10th to download my reserved copy. It was quite the experience...the return of the release date, if you will. It's been a long, long time since no one had access to an album until it's official release.

It's 'effin phenomenal by the way.

I downloaded it because it was free, just to see what they were like since I hadn't really listened to them before. I got downloaded within about 5 minutes. Very good site and UI.

Unfortunately the album was pretty poor I'm glad I didn't pay money for it.

I think it's revolutionary and all thatstuff butthe fact that they arereleasing a CD with extra tracks kind of ruins their point. a lot of bands already have released CDs and on their for example, my space pages, They put up like four of their songs and everything which would be like half of their CDs. I think is kind of lame that Radiohead is releasing a CD with more tracks that people have to (or supposedly have torrents Hint hint) buy in order to listen to. I think the impact of letting people choose to pay would have been much larger if people did not have to pay for those extra tracks.

That's half true...a deluxe 'discbox' set can be purchased now, which will be shipped on December 3rd. This includes a package of artwork, the album on double-vinyl, double-cd and yes, some extra tracks are included (costs just 0ver 40 pounds, shipping and tax included).

However, when the album is released in your local record store next year, it will contain the same tracks as the download.

I love RadioHead. If I were rich, I'd pay $500 to download it, just to support the idea.
