Yes, but she doesn't only write GOOD stories, she has an incredible ability of catching thoughts and emotions and then converting them into words. I mean I've read a lot of books but J.K. Rowling is just amazing in her way of writing.
Plus, she has created a story in "our" world, meaning she gives us the impression that this world might exist, we simply don't know (although it most probably doesn't ) ; just like the Neverending Story by Michael Ende or Narnia by C.S.Lewis and the like.
Plus, the idea of Magic is great; and she has created a very interesting and fascinating way of how Magic could work in a world where we, the human beings (or muggles actually ), live...
Thus, saying 'people like good stories, so people like Harry Potter', is not much of a praise... I'd rather say: she writes both very simply and very complex. So, for some people it's only amusing entertainment, whereas for others it's a maze of hints and traces, questions and resolutions where it's very easy to get lost in (in a positive way)...
