cf. My above comment on MvC2's "odd" sountrack.

FFXII's soundtrack is very incidental, yes. Not good in any respect. I like the game a lot though, it hasn't the story of say, the PS1 era games, or the depth of gameplay of Disgaea or whatever. But I enjoy it still.

I have very limited gambit options. Vaan autosteals.... Curaga every < 30%... crude implementation of auto-attack, etc. I wouldn't want it to be any more intelligent, and I shan't let it. You can let it run on automatic though.

Oh and roaming around: you'll find out later that teleport stones are way too cheap (200 gil? Come on, it should be 2000 or something) and the game becomes a crystal hopping exercise, not much backtracking involved.

      ----

Back to the sound tracks, glad you enjoyed the link. Does anybody remember the generic boss music to Final Fantasy 8? That was cool. And Ultimecia's fight tune, that was great, even better if you weren't smarting from Pulsar Beam the turn earlier.

Epic Megagame's music was always good - cheesy perhaps, but always good. I grew up with their games. Having dropped the "Mega" and now a heavyweight of the industry, I still hold dear Jazz Jackrabbit, One Must Fall, Epic Pinball et al and all those crazy s3m soundtracks.

First levels are always good showcases for decent tunes too. Who can forget Doom's Hangar, Duke's cinema thing and Super Mario 1-1?

Yeah, FF8's music is really amazing. I have the orchestrated version, and still listen to it. Thank goodness for that, because aside from amazing music and graphics, FF8 was the shittiest game of the series .

FF7 also, excellent music. The music of FF9 didn't really stay with me, but X definitely did.

Does anyone here ever get random songs in their heads without paying attention, that they can't figure out what they are? Like I'll be walking around, playing something in my head without realizing it, and then when I focus in, I'm like.... what the Shinobi?!? Same goes for Marble Madness, I'll find random MM tracks creeping into my head randomly...

I don't recall if anyone has mentioned Tommy Tallarico, the game music composer but, I've heard a lot of his stuff - even have a CD of "music" he composed in his studio. I don't know, something about his "music" always struck me as completely sucking. I don't mean your standard, run-of-the-mill sucking. I mean vacuous, suckticity of sucktitude suckiness.

Maybe I just haven't heard his good stuff - if there is such a thing - but, man, I can't understand how he became so revered in the video game music business.

Hey, i bought the FFXII soundtrack, its actually pretty good considering its not by Nobuo Uematsu, you should definately check it out, i'm listening to it now coincidentely. Its not got as many good tracks like FFX but its still a good soundtrack.

We'll see how I feel about it once I'm deeper into the game. Nobuo is definitely a tough act to follow, and this poor composer is basically living in his shadow, but we'll see.

After FFXII, I plan on playing all the Xenosaga games. I think it'll have a similar effect going from 1 to 2, cause it goes from Yasunori Mitsuda (i.e. one of the greatest vgmusic composers ever) to some random guy.

I'm not comparing him to Nobuo, Nobuo was a great composer, the best in my opinion, this new guy has a different take on it but has failed to produce lots of great tracks like Nobuo did, this enw guy has taken a more orchestral take on the music.

F-Zero X - Big Blue is very fine music. But I can't go past Cave Story for superb game music. In particular the tracks Gravity, Scorching Back, Break Down and The Way Back Home. Get all of them if you like game music at all.

Ah, so this thread isn't dead, i finally came up with a reason i like video game music so much, some of it really fits with parts of your life and it feels like your in your own movie with your own soundtrack, its really cool actually i must admit.

Videogames that have fantastic music soundtracks according to me are:
      Oddworld Abe's Oddysee
      Medal of Honor games
Splinter Cell: Chaos theory (amon tobin's music)
Prince of Persia 1 2 and 3; The latest triology of Prince of persia games.
Luminous Spacious Dream Masters That Holographically Communicate
      among other teachers taught me

for doing so would make us Blind for the unimaginable, unparalleled Capacity of and Wisdom contained within our Felt Knowledge;Subconscious Intuition.

Are you judging the music for your memories connected to it or the musical quality?

I like the music from MystIII exile. I also have the riven soundtrack, but it is a bit slow and dark for my taste. still, very nice. halo soundtracks good too, but not for listening to on a regular basis. im trying to get ahold of the tracks used in crackdown, but i would concider it game music... exept for that track that plays when youre on top of a high place. i sooo want that track.

The music from the Myst series is excellent, its very mystical and mysterious, i must admit that even though Riven was the best in the series, it did have some pretty scary and emptyness type music. Halo has a great soundtrack also If you want to find out where you can get that crackdown track send me a PM

      Shoji Meguro

easily my favorite vg music ever - he has a solid body of work ranging through the entire shin megami series - quite atmospheric and at times funky

      also,

the original Metroid has some of the most wonderful eerie music of all time - especially 'Kraid'
