FFX had really nice music. I'm sad Nobuo didn't do the score for FFXII. I haven't played that one enough to have a proper opinion, but based on the few tracks I've heard, it creates an atmosphere that feels too much like an MMO, and not enough like a FF game... but we'll see, as I'm only at the very beginning...

FFXII is MMO city. I'm ten hours in and can't bring myself to go any further because I know I'm just in for ~100 more hours of roaming around and having my gambited characters autokill things for me.

cf. My above comment on MvC2's "odd" sountrack.

FFXII's soundtrack is very incidental, yes. Not good in any respect. I like the game a lot though, it hasn't the story of say, the PS1 era games, or the depth of gameplay of Disgaea or whatever. But I enjoy it still.

I have very limited gambit options. Vaan autosteals.... Curaga every < 30%... crude implementation of auto-attack, etc. I wouldn't want it to be any more intelligent, and I shan't let it. You can let it run on automatic though.

Oh and roaming around: you'll find out later that teleport stones are way too cheap (200 gil? Come on, it should be 2000 or something) and the game becomes a crystal hopping exercise, not much backtracking involved.

      ----

Back to the sound tracks, glad you enjoyed the link. Does anybody remember the generic boss music to Final Fantasy 8? That was cool. And Ultimecia's fight tune, that was great, even better if you weren't smarting from Pulsar Beam the turn earlier.

Epic Megagame's music was always good - cheesy perhaps, but always good. I grew up with their games. Having dropped the "Mega" and now a heavyweight of the industry, I still hold dear Jazz Jackrabbit, One Must Fall, Epic Pinball et al and all those crazy s3m soundtracks.

First levels are always good showcases for decent tunes too. Who can forget Doom's Hangar, Duke's cinema thing and Super Mario 1-1?

Yeah, FF8's music is really amazing. I have the orchestrated version, and still listen to it. Thank goodness for that, because aside from amazing music and graphics, FF8 was the shittiest game of the series .

FF7 also, excellent music. The music of FF9 didn't really stay with me, but X definitely did.

Does anyone here ever get random songs in their heads without paying attention, that they can't figure out what they are? Like I'll be walking around, playing something in my head without realizing it, and then when I focus in, I'm like.... what the Shinobi?!? Same goes for Marble Madness, I'll find random MM tracks creeping into my head randomly...

I don't recall if anyone has mentioned Tommy Tallarico, the game music composer but, I've heard a lot of his stuff - even have a CD of "music" he composed in his studio. I don't know, something about his "music" always struck me as completely sucking. I don't mean your standard, run-of-the-mill sucking. I mean vacuous, suckticity of sucktitude suckiness.

Maybe I just haven't heard his good stuff - if there is such a thing - but, man, I can't understand how he became so revered in the video game music business.

F-Zero X - Big Blue is very fine music. But I can't go past Cave Story for superb game music. In particular the tracks Gravity, Scorching Back, Break Down and The Way Back Home. Get all of them if you like game music at all.

Definately the final fantasy series, i really enjoyed the ix soundtrack. Lately the guilty gear x2 soundtrack has made its way onto my play list- some pretty awesome pieces.

Hey, i bought the FFXII soundtrack, its actually pretty good considering its not by Nobuo Uematsu, you should definately check it out, i'm listening to it now coincidentely. Its not got as many good tracks like FFX but its still a good soundtrack.

We'll see how I feel about it once I'm deeper into the game. Nobuo is definitely a tough act to follow, and this poor composer is basically living in his shadow, but we'll see.

After FFXII, I plan on playing all the Xenosaga games. I think it'll have a similar effect going from 1 to 2, cause it goes from Yasunori Mitsuda (i.e. one of the greatest vgmusic composers ever) to some random guy.

I'm not comparing him to Nobuo, Nobuo was a great composer, the best in my opinion, this new guy has a different take on it but has failed to produce lots of great tracks like Nobuo did, this enw guy has taken a more orchestral take on the music.
