Thread: Cool illusion!

I stold this from the saltcube forum, I thought it was really neat:

If your eyes FOLLOW the movement of the rotating pink dot, you will only see one color, pink.

If you STARE at the black + in the center, the moving dot turns to green.

Now, concentrate on the black + in the center of the picture.

After a short period of time, ALL the pink dots will slowly disappear,
and you will ONLY see a GREEN dot rotating if you're lucky!

It's amazing how our brain works. There really is no green dot, and the pink ones really don't disappear. This should be proof enough, we don't always see what we think we see.



Worked for me... I could make all the pink dissapear. Too fuktup.

It's not all THAT amazing. It's just that your eyes get used to a certain colour and compensate. It's the exact same thing as when you close one eye for like a minute, and then when you open it, you see a different tint out of the one eye for a little while.

That's pretty cool. I like the way you see the green, then as the green dot goes around it makes all the pink dots disappear one by one... woooaahhh...

I've seen it before, I managed to get all but one dot invisible. Never the last one though

Now, choose any one of the pink dots and cover all the rest. You'll notice that the pink dots are actually turning green for a brief moment. At least, it sure appears that way.

Seriously, cover all the dots except one and tell me what you think is going on.

It would seem, that inverting the colour changes the invisible dot. Also, I checked the animation, when it was still, and there is no green dot, and the grey background it completely colourless.



But what I found though, is that the invisible dot, is the inverted version of the visible dots.

Oh, and yes, this illusion is old. I believe I saw it first about 4 years back.

edit: by the way, this version requires a bit more concentration.

I love this illusion. This should be discerneable proof that the material world is illusion.

I can't get all of the pink dots to disappear, i can get about 2/5's and then I see them again, lol.

wow the green dot would go around and make all the dots dissapear one byu one. then put them back one by one. over and over again.

I heard a good explanation for this in a textbook once, something about the green and purple colors being opposite additive colors of light, and when the color is suddenly taken away -- the blank spot in the animation -- there's a residual signal on the photoreceptors that transmits a false image of the negative color to our brain.

Or something like that. Can't remember exactly. Kind of like when you stare at a contrasty picture for a while and look away, and you have the image burned into your eyes for a little while. It's all physics and a little biology. Or all biology and a little physics.
