The Doobie Brothers ~ China Groove
So, my little sister is asking me to give her Passion Pit. But for Christmas, I'll do better than that. I plan to give her my iPod shuffle, after filling it with catchy nice indie (hurr) popsongs.
But she wanted to hear what I had on it already. Shuffled through a bit of "ominous" Saxon Shore, declared she liked Ra Ra Riot, danced to The Outline, and then shuffled to "Two Headed Boy." I recommended that if she wanted to understand what was going on, she should listen to In the Aeroplane Over the Sea from the beginning, because, "It's a concept album. Try and see if you can figure out the story." I asked her what she knows about the 1940's (unexpectedly, the bombing of Hiroshima was the first to come out of her mouth, and only after some prompting did she recall learning about the European turmoil of WWII).
Now she's listening to (and understanding, pretty much) the entire album, something my brother and sister-in-law wrote off as "folk music with shitty vocals and downbeat melodies." I told her they said that, too, and she frowned, telling me that she didn't notice the singer's voice or the 'downbeat' melodies, blaming it on her (partially deaf) ear. I told her that I didn't think his voice was shitty, but that it was real.
Ah, but the shuffle ran out of juice after The Fool, so she's waiting until tomorrow to hear the rest.
