Tool is the Radiohead of nu-metal. It's best to keep the fans worrying that they'll never put out another album.

MJK is a known liar. He does it so because he wants people to actually challenge things instead of faithfully believing anything that's said. There was also a "24 minute song" supposedly on the new album, but yeah I really doubt that (too).

my friend was raving about that album, and he has a pretty good taste in music. Personally, I've only heard one Tool song, and it was good.
Back with less attitude and more diffidence than ever before! Maybe.

listened through the album a couple times (though never with full attention)...

some righteous portions, but disappointing overall...they risk becoming generic (in their own way).

as with all tool albums, i'll probably only add two or three songs to my permanent song list.

i am a huge fan of tool and was overall disappointed with the 10,000 days.

they weren't really consistent enough with their songs on the album. they went from loud to quiet and it put me off quite a bit personally.

whatever.... guess i will stick to Aenema and Undertow
In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move.

I had never listened to them before until last week when my friend let me borow his Aenema cd, I liked it. Does the new cd have any of the "filler" songs, like static or eletrical noises? Because I didnt like those.

a song isn't 'filler' simply because it doesn't have lyrics.

something i enjoy about tool is the way they make the entire album a piece of art... not only the individual songs. for instance: the acetate cd cover of lateralus... or the actual cd case of 10,000 days... or the entire audio on aniema... including useful idiot. the sound in useful idiot is a needle scratching across vinyl... now if you invested in the vinyl version of this album this would seem more significant.

or you can call it static.

Tool is my favorite band. They're amazing. After listening to them, it's no wonder they got a record deal after only 7 gigs.

Their music isn't like anything else and should have its own genre.

I own all the albums except Aenima (I have 3 songs from it), and I don't care what others think, but 10,000 days was definitely not a disappointment to me. Like some people have already said here, the album is like a big piece of art. The calm songs are actually some of my favorites.

I also love how they seem to have a different sound for each song on the album. If you listen to "Vicarious" and then "The Pot," big difference.

Their sound has definitely influenced me. I'm working on a 20-minute-long musical project called "Project Random Thoughts" (which I will probably upload and post on here sometime soon) and I'm putting a sound similar to theirs into it. Don't worry, I'm not completely copying them. Everything in it is coming pretty much right out of my own head.
Since the one thing we can say about all fundamental matter is that it is vibrating, and since all vibrations are theoretically sound, then it is not unreasonable to suggest that the universe is music and should be perceived as such.

I think what Maynard wants is for you to use your mind with the songs.they are works of art..its not just something to hum to and sing, its about "getting something" out of the music. I do not think he will ever spoon feed anyone on what/how to get something out of a song or work of art thats up to you the listener.

Music, Art and beauty all are subjective and everything is personal and interpeted by they way you grew up... we are all shaped by our past and what you get out of it is up to you.

I did not Like this cd as much as I have liked some of the past but thats not to say it did not have any good content. I love Alex's work of art . but then my taste does not run the bubble gum gambit.

Even something simple can have deeper meaning and be complex.
These cool deep waters where I do dwell, unspoken secrets I long to tell.
Darkly in your dreams, nothing is as it seems and these images disguised so well.
Cry out to be unmasked by careful gleanings are the hidden deeper meanings..

I like it. It's an album to sit back and appreciate the soft intensity, not one to disect the intricate song structure or be kicked in the face with. It's great with headphones because they do some interesting panning effects between speakers. However, I am disappointed that at around 6:45 into Right in Two, they basically use the first chorus from Forty Six & 2 as a bridge. Also the ending of Vicarious sounds very reminiscent of Schism’s ending.

Saw Tool on May 17th at the Tower Theater in Philly, 6th row center. Best live performance
I've ever seen in my life; and I've been to hundreds.
3500 seat venue, they were ten feet away.

Stunning is the only way to describe the energy. They are unrivaled, in my opinion.
They are my favorite band because they progress steadily, if not always understandably.

Barrett/bob, you are on to something. I had a suspicion that this album was going to have multiple tracks that fit together, more than just Wings (Pt 1+2) and Viginti Tres. I think you may have put it together. It looks like tracks from previous albums will be mixed in.

I just listened to Vicarious and Schism together, even though I was off by about a second. It really sounded like they were opposites. Not only does the ending match nicely, but the solo during schism hits right in stride with "La-la-la-la-la-la-lie". I also think that at the beginning, how schism has four notes, "buh-dum-duh-dah", Vicarious has the clock thing that rings five times. The timing is there so that it can alternate from clock ringing to schism and back without overlap. As I was listening to the both at the same time, I couldn't help but notice the irony of the lyrics "I know the pieces fit, I watched them fall away".

As far as Right In Two, that probably matches up with Forty-Six & 2. I haven't heard the track, but it's name, Right in Two, might be telling you something.

There are a few moments like that. The final song seems to match with (-)ions in regards to the speaker panning. I haven't done it in a while, but I think I matched the songs so that they ended at the same time. I was trying to find a similarity between Lost Keys and Ticks and Leeches, but haven't found anything. I don't know if there is a grand scheme in regards to the similairites, but I like to think that there is to justify the obvious reusing of material. You can trick the mind into believing anything, heh.

Have you found "the message" in the artwork?

that sounds like fun! i'm going to try that when i get home tonight. i'm sure you've heard of "Dark Side of the Rainbow" (watching Wizard of Oz while listening to Dark Side of the Moon)? one time, some of my friends and i got really stoned and, on a random whim, watched Peewee's Big Adventure (muted) while listening to Lateralus. it was pretty cool! i'm sure being stoned enhanced the effect, but there were some things that synced up anyway. for example, at the very start of the album, there are 7-10 seconds or so of machine noises before the music starts. the music starting coincided with the "Music By Danny Elfman" title showing up onscreen. there were a few times that the scene would change right as the music would change, or the rhythm of the music would match the rhythm of movements on screen, or the tone of the music would be appropriate for what we were seeing on screen. my theory is that you can watch any movie muted while listening to any album and it will sync up at least a little bit. i'm sure some combinations work better than others, but i think anything will work to a certain extant.

barrett, there's a message in the artwork? (other than "alex grey kicks ass") what is it?

      SETLIST --

      Lost Keys
      Rosetta Stoned
      Stinkfist
      Forty Six & 2
      Jambi
      Schism
      Right in Two
      Sober

      Vicarious
      Ænema

The hanging note that begins Lost Keys is played on the bass by JC. They came out
one by one and joined in as the song progressed. MJK was last, wearing a cowboy
outfit and toting a bull horn with a CB style mic, which he sang through for Rosetta.

After the set and before the encore they came to the edge of the stage and shook hands
and such with the folks closest. Then they sat down in the middle of the stage chatting amongst themselves while we were all still shouting and cheering. After about 5 mins.
they seemed convinced that we deserved more and returned to their instruments and
      tore into Vicarious and AEnema.

All in all a complete departure from what I'd seen at other performances in terms of
how open they were. They seemed to sense the crowds sincerity and returned it.

Well the fact that Alex Grey kicks ass wouldn't take too much to figure out. He does kick ass. As for the message, there was a post on Toolband.com mentioning that they will not reveal the series of clues in the stereo optic images that leads to a message. I can't figure it out at all. I've tried, but maybe the fact that I just cannot get that 3D stuff to work limits me. There is a message board at http://toolshed.down.net that discusses, in extreme depth, anything tool. Check it out.

Pretty cool. Can't believe that they actually dropped Opiate from their set list. Maybe their recent spiritual developement has caused that song to lose meaning. Regardless, I wish I could have seen it. They chose to skip playing anywhere within three hours of me.
