I remember when that movie first came out! *Pretty cool then, pretty cool now.
However, the book and its sequels were MUCH MUCH better. *I suggest you grab a copy of the book, it goes into WAY more detail from beginning to end.
Basically, this alien force travels the universe and leaves monoliths on planets they feel intelligent life can evolve on.
After 'Dave' landed, he went to sleep and recapitulated his life during the transformation into the 'Starchild' *(fetus at the end)
From there, he traveled through space and helped the aliens develop intelligent life. *However, that is the topic of the followup books!
Read them, it will be worth your time.
Ah, thanks for the info seeker. I allready got it that the monoliths were left by aliens, and had something to do with it's intelligence.
However, I didn't even know there were books. I might read them once. Often books are great in a different way. The movie was way more audio and visually instead of based on dialogue like most movies, so that was rather intresting.
yet, if you think of it, you could tell just about Everything about the movie in 60 seconds I guess like most books that have movies, the books are way deeper...
I will read it once, but probably in about 6 years, I am not that much into reading

edit: The former pope, John Paul, really liked 2001: A Space Odyssey! I found that on the internet. Really funny since the movie is about aliens and evolution, lol.
