It used to be my favorite type of music although I've never gotten much into the actual bands. I still like it but haven't been in the mood the last few months, not as depressed as I used to be. In particular I liked Insomnium. Other bands were In Flames, Wolves in the Throne Room, some others I don't remember at the moment.
It's the kind of thing that you really need to be in the right mindset for or else it will sound like garbage as it does to most people. I remember being annoyed when people thought it sounded like crap as they obviously just didn't understand it, had no idea what mindset it took to appreciate it yet they were judging it to be objectively crap anyway.
I can agree with you about being in the right mind set. I forgot about Insomnium by the way. Another good band. :)
I typed that in a rush and didn't mean 'actual bands', just that I haven't heard of most of the popular ones, just happened to catch onto a few and it was all I listened to for about a year.
Just found a band called Persefone. They sound like they are melodic death... Pretty good I think. :)
this is as close as i get to melodic death metal. this is depressive black metal, or ambient black metal.. whichever you prefer to call it...
give it a listen, you might like it.
Midnight Odyssey- Fallen From Firmament- first song off the album Funerals From The Astral Sphere

Midnight Odyssey is genius.
As for melo-death, I generally don't like modern melo-death too much, it normally turns out to be more melo-thrash.
I do have one band that's modern melo-death - Terracide
I love Insomnium. Another great bands are Kalmah, Be'lakor, Eternal Tears of Sorrow, Dark Tranquility, Parasite Inc and the less known Darkest Hour.

One for Sorrow was a pretty damn good album, I will attest to that.
Also just remembered another - Gemanon.
