What is the greatest heavy metal song of all time?

I know that if you're into metal you have lots of favorites, but try to narrow it down to just one. This gets my vote...

I guess the term is pretty dynamical, I just always associated Led Zepplin with "Classic Rock".

Heavy Metal is a pretty generic term (though i wouldn't classify Led Zeppelin metal)

      Best Heavy Metal song?

      My favourite Heavy Metal song?

You also gotta give it to the beatles for conceiving progressive rock.

Zeppelin's totally a forefather of heavy metal, though. C'monnn.

Helter Skelter was written in 1968. That's a little late, I'm afraid.

Yngwie Malmsteen played a huge role in developing a lot of European Heavy metal, if we're going to pedantic, technically this gentleman created Heavy metal =P

Probably one of the greatest metal songs, in my opinion.

That doesn't make any sense. The whole point of progressive rock, as far as I know, is that it explores new themes and ideas.

But you agree that metal was invented in 1969 by Black Sabbath? Well... okay.

That's obviously not what prog rock means. Chuck Berry explored new themes and ideas, I don't think he was prog.

I was always particular to this:

But for me, this album really brought me in to liking Heavy Metal. Any song is good. Their later stuff blows goats, but this album was awesome!

Yeah you're right, the Beatles didn't do that at all. As much as progressive music is an active idea, progressive rock is also a well defined group of bands (though very eclectic): Pink Floyd, Yes, Rush, Genesis, etc. The Beatles at the peak of their experimental creativity are known to be the main precursor of progressive rock. For example, the members of Pink Floyd worshiped the beatles, they said that's all they ever wanted to be when they were starting out.

Ahh man what an order, just picking one song from so many awesome bands. Well I have made my decision and I think it has to be the song below as it has everything including a refernce to dreams!!! And just to prove how good these boys really, really are there is a live jam recording of them playing another of their songs below the first video.

But progressive rock simply means a form of rock that progresses the genre. You can't point out any one band and say "they invented prog rock", it makes no sense.

Not many answers to this question in this thread...

What is the greatest heavy metal song of all time?

I know that I would never vote for Jethro Tull, but somehow it's considered heavy metal, so, perhaps anything goes.

I agree with you, there is progressive the concept, but there is progressive rock the genre. All genres start somewhere, progressive rock branched off of early psychedelic, of which the beatles were pioneers.

I think the question is a bit too much to ask for me, good choice though.

Whaa...Jethro Tull is definitely prog rock. A lot of bands have metal elements, but that doesn't mean they should be considered metal.

Most of the metal posted so far is somewhat old. If I were to select a more modern track, I'd probably have to go with 'Tool - Vicarious' or something out of Pantera. Thinking 'Immortally Insane' or 'Cowbows from Hell'.

Tool is great! I still wonder how many people listen to their early stuff.

I saw them here in Austin back in about...oh...perhaps 1992, and they were touring with Rollins Band, which was the headlining act at the time. Tool hadn't yet broken in to the mainstream with Sober, and they were an awesome band in a small venue. I've seen them three times.

I can think of some other modern heavy bands but I don't believe I'd classify them all as "Heavy Metal", and I doubt I'd put Tool in that category either.
