Just be clear that you're talking about the manga--the anime didn't even come close. The live action movies actually were not bad, IMO, but more as big crazy fun action movies than anything deep. I suppose they'd be a decent mindfuck, too, if you weren't familiar w/ the story.
Yeah, I'm talking about the manga. I couldn't even finish the anime. I watched five or six episodes but it just felt so.....lame. Somehow everything that was cool, frightening, or sad in the manga was just embarrassing and bland in the anime. I don't know how they managed to fuck it up so much. I haven't watched the live action movies for fear that they'd have the same quality as the Battle Royale movie. I'll give em a shot.

Also. Taosaur, since you like Gantz, you should check out Berserk if you get a chance. It's pretty great.

And another thing, everyone needs to go watch Puella Magi Madoka Magica. It's NOT your average, everyday mahou shoujo. I probably never would've watched it if I didn't hear that it was a dark variant of the genre.

      1. Excel Saga - Manga only. The anime blows. Nothing gets me laughing more than this epic series, especially from volume 8 on when it's less random.
      2. Big O
      3. Betterman - Anime from TechTv. Found it more smartly written and riveting than, say, Neon Genesis Evangelion.
      4. Code Geass
      5. Death Note - Only read manga.
      6. Natsume's Book of Friends - Decent slice of life manga and anime.
      7. Trigun - Manga moreso than the anime, but both are good.
      8. Berserk - Only so low down because the story is tending to drag on in latter volumes.
      9. Gantz - Pretty tired of this series from watching it so many times, but the manga is still going and is good.
      10. Digimon season 1-3. xD

Honorable mentions: Doremi Ojamajo (It looks childish, but it's ridiculously funny), Samurai Champloo, .hack//sign, Claymore, Utewarumareu... and a lot more.

Dragonball (Manga) I wen't to Helsinki Central library, just to found that there were only books 1-3 (Helsinki is about 20 km away, and it's bit hard to get there by public, with leg broken) Never actually read manga, so i thought that Dragonball would be kind of a "soft fall" to it!

I recently found there is a "To Love Ru Darkness" manga. I thought they would make an anime out of it, but so far, I'm liking it.

It's ecchi, so don't say I didn't warn you. It's the same panty shots, breasts, etc., and the main character still falling and landing on some awkward parts of females.

What makes it even more funny is one of the twin sisters of Lala wants the main character to make his own harem because once he becomes the next king of deviluke, earth laws won't apply, so he can marry more than one woman.

(And he still can't freaking confess to the girl he likes....poor soul) :/

It's not that perverted...it's just....eh. You have to see it for yourself.

I recently finished Karin and it was pretty entertaining. Though I'm usually more into serious anime/manga I enjoyed this one a lot with it's lighthearted feel and comical moments. If you've got the time and just feel like being entertained then I highly recommend this.

In case you couldn't tell from my previous posts I enjoy vampires a lot but really just anything where it's an everyday story with a supernatural element thrown in.

About some girls who are mahou shoujo and fighting against witches, there's way more that i could tell you about but it'd kinda ruin it. You definitely won't regret watching it, even though it might seem kinda lame at the moment.

I haven't watched anime for a year or so because I've found something else to obsess over while it's still in production. (My avatar.)

But when I did watch anime, I absolutely loved "Lucky Star", "Azumanga Daioh!", "Minami-ke", and "Galaxy Angel".

You've probably heard of the first two, maybe not the last two.

Regardless, the first three are slice of life comedies (think Japanese animated sitcoms), and can be particularly funny. "Lucky" and "Daioh!" both focus on a group of friends in high-school, while "Minami-ke" focuses on one family of three girls, one an underclassman, one a middleclassman, and one an upperclassman. They are all quite humorous.

What you're probably wondering about, though, is "Galaxy Angel". Yeah, that does sound pretty gay, doesn't it? Well, it's not. You can trust me. It's incredibly funny. It revolves around a group of 6(? It's been a couple years.) girls and takes place in the future. Essentially, they run a small outfit that's only purpose is to find and dig up lost technology all over the universe. I love it less because of the plot, however, and because of the characterization, which is something I've always been a fan of.

If you're into intense characterization, then don't hesitate to give these a try! And if you're into intense characterization, then let me know some of your favorite anime. I mean, that's one of the major reasons I even like "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" now: because of the way the characters are portrayed, and how unique and dynamic they are.

I was JUST going to say "That's probably why you like MLP. Then I read on, although having already liked the post for Azumanga Daioh! and Lucky star (mostly Daioh, though. ).

That's adorable. And it's really unsafe. She gon' knock over that chair and 'urt 'erself!

Anyway, yeah, that's the best part of most series for me. I love the writing that's put into characters interacting with each-other. Up-tight people interacting with mellow people. Harsh, angry people interacting with happy-go-lucky people.

One of my favorite things in writing for anything has always been writing dialogue. I love thinking of all the things that people would say in different positions, essentially trying to make myself both of those people for a few minutes to right the scene. Something about it is intentionally satisfying. Both to write AND watch!~

Death Note is my favorite manga by far. It even pretty far outclasses the anime, in my opinion.

I've seen plenty of good anime in this list. I agree with Velarious and Taffy, Madoka Magica is great. The music and animation are beautiful. I'm not crazy about magical girl shows, but the series has such great character and plot development. The first three episodes are a little slow, but it gets exciting right after that.

I'll add my own favorites that have not been mentioned.

      .hack//Sign:
While playing an MMORPG, a boy realizes that he can't log out of the game. This MMO is played with a headset, so it's more like virtual reality than a game. The anime explores the history of the game, as well as the goals of all the different characters. It's interesting, I swear. Good music by Yuki Kajiura too.

      Escaflowne:
It's a 90's anime, so it has some really cheesy or frustrating aspects. But it has great character development and music. High school girl gets transported to a world on the brink of war, and both sides realize that her fortune-telling/tarot card reading abilities can be used to win the war. Lots of mechs, love triangles, teenager angst, death, politics and manipulation.

      Grave of the Fireflies:
Studio Ghibli film about WWII, created and released at the same time as Totoro (which was also a film that took place during WWII). It's about two kids trying to survive in Japan without their parents. They have no one else to rely on but each other. Children + war = depressing Fantastic film, but depressing.

      Hourou Musuko:
Anime following the challenges of two transgendered children in elementary school. The anime explores how they're viewed by society, how biological sex plays a role in acceptance/intolerance, and the start of the kids' puberty and how they feel about their loss of androgyny.

      Kimi ni Todoke:
This is shoujo. >.> A high school girl who looks a lot like Sadako from the horror film, The Ring, is very awkward. She is shunned and misunderstood by her peers. One person in her class acknowledges her and tries to understand her, and she begins her journey of making friends. Filled with hilarious awkward moments and touching friendship moments.

      Metropolis:
Cool steampunk movie about a sentient robot lady.

      Ouran High School Host Club:
There's one poor kid in a school full of rich kids. The poor kid becomes indebted to the Host Club, and must pay off the debt by becoming a host. This series is full of gender-bending, and pokes fun at most other shows that center around school. It focuses on comedy in the beginning, then slowly starts focusing on the other characters and their backstories (oh, the troubles of the rich).

      Princess Mononoke
Studio Ghibli, I'm sure most of you have seen it.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time:
The movie focuses on a girl who realizes she can travel back in time to relive her past. She fixes her mistakes, but at a price.

      Steins;Gate:
Another time traveling anime! The main character is a paranoid, delusional, poor college student that stumbles upon a method of time travel. The protagonist conducts experiments to determine the power and functionality of the time machine. I won't say anything else out of fear of spoiling it, but this anime has a great mix of comedy, drama and science.

He's not delusional! He knows exactly what he's doing!
He is mad scientist, it's so COOL.
      Sonuvabitch.

      I'll jot down my favorites when I get home from school. Got finals today ;A;

      EDIT:
Okay, so obviously Steins;Gate is amazing~
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is one of my tops. ESPECIALLY the Endless Eight. I don't care what anyone says.
Mushi-shi is about this guy who travels around solving problems that mushi are causing
K-ON! is just "Adorableness: the Anime"

Mushi-shi, K-ON!, and Redline (along with Haruhi Suzumiya) are so good that I bought the DVDs

It's not an anime, but Katawa Shoujo is WONDERFUL. Best story out of anything I've ever watched/read. I definitely recommend it.

And I'm currently watching Oreimo. It's definitely not as bad as people say it is
