I used to watch it when I was around 12, and I enjoyed it!
As I grew though, I became less and less interested in anime (and pretty much all other animated shows) in general. So, I stopped watching it.
Now I watch Discovery Channel.
I watched it a couple of times when I was 7, but a couple of years went by and there was a lot of hype for it, and I didn't understand it. I grew out of it pretty quick, but still, I never really got into it.
Travel Channel, Discovery Channel, and Animal Planet are great. No Reservations and Bizarre Foods is a good way to learn about the world, and Discovery Channel has interesting stuff like Myth Busters, Time Warp and Cash Cab. Animal Planet is great just because I love animals.
Oh and the first couple hours of Adult Swim are awesome sauce!
Hell yeah, I used to watch that as a kid. Nowadays I re-visit the magnas every once in a while, they're a lot better than the T.V. show in my opinion. While I loved it when I was younger, watching it now it doesn't hold up so well. The action scenes are pretty awesome, but everything is way too drawn out. Every episode is so short and not enough happens in the 24 minutes or however long they are.
The magnas are awesome because you can flip through them pretty fast, and they're uncensored. The art is great, the dialouge and everything better than the T.V. show. The Buu saga was so well done in the magnas, but the show dragged it out waaaay too long and made Buu annoying as ****.
I have to say that the movies were pretty damn good though, much better in quality than the TV show. The Return of Cooler and Cooler's Revenge were awesome. Vegeta has always been my favorite character, so it was nice to see him actually matter for once and save Goku's ass.
Huge fan - especially around my high school years. Much of my own drawing style was influenced by DBZ. I think its story is truly one of the greatest epics of all time. (Not that I'm familiar with every epic ever written, but I can't see even the best of tales being That much better. Lol.) It's true that everyone tends to gripe about things being drawn out, and they really are at times. But what I actually happen to like is the long power-ups. It actually gives the cartoon a bit more realism (if that makes any sense). The powering up is no different than a martial artist psyching himself up to break a stack of bricks. Sometimes it takes longer and longer to generate that kind of mental focus to do the deed. These time limits are compounded, because these are aliens creating the moves, whose minds/bodies are able to generate much more energy - if given a longer time to generate it. It's such a novel concept, but people get so turned off by it. Meh. Oh well.
Probably my favorite thing about the combat in DBZ is the grappling and super-speed melee - especially in the DBZ movies, where it is all just so well done. Watching Goku ricochet around like a bullet in an iron cage - whooping ass on multiple attackers at 7 punches a second - is a thing of beauty. Seriously some of the best fights of any anime I've ever seen. My favorite sagas are a tie between the Cell and Frieza sagas. Going into the Buu saga, I began getting a little turned off. The whole "candy" aspect and all of the reversion to (even) more childish themes just kinda made me start losing interest. And when DBGT came around, I pretty much just completely walked the other way. I love the movies, though. All of them. They are awesome. The animation is so much better, and the fights are so much detailed. Pretty good work on the narratives too - well, some of them.
Probably the most amazing moment in the DBZ universe:
It still gives me chills.
watched the entire thing online (290 something episodes) and the movies in about...... 10 days?
Wow great video Oneironaut, the quality is incredible. Definitely one of the best moments of the series, even though I always thought Vegeta should have been the one to defeat him through rage, after Trunks got demolished. I definitely agree that the movies were much more detailed and overall better quality, for me they have such a different feel from the tv show. Did you ever read the magnas? And what are your thoughts on the Dragonball series?
I've never even seen a GT episode, I stopped after that horrible conclusion to the Buu saga, which up until that point was one of my favorites (magna version). Why the hell would Goku leave his family to go train some Buu reincarnate on a desert island somewhere? I mean come on.
Never read the mangas, but I actually kinda liked the Dragonball series. I didn't see every episode of DB, but pretty much came into it when Goku was a teen, and fighting in the tournaments against Piccolo Jr. I went back and saw some of (younger) Goku's battles, earlier in the series. Then, DBZ came out, and I was hooked. I still don't think I've seen all the DB episodes, though.
I absolutely loved Dragon Ball when I was little. I was just a kid when I watched it so I doubt I really got a grasp of the story line, I should probably rewatch it because of that. As for Dragon Ball Z, it was one of my favorite shows. I watch every episode the day it aired and eagerly waited for each new one. As a kid, I didn't mind the filler; I doubt anyone really did at that age. If I go back and try to watch it now though, I can't say I enjoy it as much. I've only seen a few of the animated movies but if they're as good as you guys say, I'll definitely go back and watch them all. Dragon Ball GT wasn't as great as DBZ imo. It had it's moments but I just never really got into it.
They started airing Dragon Ball Kai a little while ago, which is supposed to be DBZ with less filler, new dialogue, and cleaner animation. Has anyone hear watched? If I do go back and watch DBZ again, I'm not sure if the original is worth the time or if I should just go for the revamped version.
Hell ya I watched DBZ (even though I wasn't allowed to watch it most of my childhood I was raised in a super strict household) and I still love the original Dragon Ball. Lol Oneironaut I drew alot of dragonballz characters as well, my parents often wondered why I chose to draw pictures of blonde haired men with no shirts and hella muscles. I'm actually surprised I'm not flaming gay because of it.
yeah i watch it too! it's really good
Man, I grew up watching DBZ. I've been watching the Kai series on Nick lately.
And for all you Toonami Faithful out there.

That's just the DBZ section. Go back to the main page for promos from all the other shows.
Make sure to watch all those in 1080p. :D
My favorite episode
YouTube - ‪so apparently you can watch movies on youtube now‬‏
One episode of actual story, 5 episodes of HURRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
One of my favorites moments is when all the Z fighters have to punch this button, which then gives a "power number." You have to get over a certain number in order to qualify for the tourney. All the humans are getting like 100, Piccollo barely taps it and gets like 700. Then Vegeta punches it at half speed and explodes the entire machine. All the other Z fighters got all pissed at him cause now they had to wait in line while the machine got fixed.
I like the episode where baby Gohan beats up dinosaurs.
never got whats so great about it.. only watched very little, though
I own all the dvd's, dbz is the best. I still remember watching it when I was in okinawa uncut as a boy. Dragonball is better imo, just have to love the comedy and goku beating up those red ribbon army guys.

I used to watch it a lot when it was a kid. I agree, that scene is probably the best moment in the whole thing, and it gives me those same chills. :)
Too bad the english dub is so shitty though. I much prefer the scene in Japanese, and that song is really awesome:
No but I would watch the Movie Dragon Ball Z, just because Emmy Rossum is in it. :)
Heard the movie wasn't good btw...so what!
I was actually kind of hoping someone would pick up on my 'don't get it'. More directly: What's the appeal? I gather many people, not only of young age, really like that show. People with good taste, also.
I have learned that those persistent fan-bases often have a point in being persistent. (for me that's star trek and firefly just to name two examples, good shows). So what is it about dragonball?
Well, for me, it's like this:Quote:
So what is it about dragonball?
First off, the overall story is just Epic - in the purest sense of the word. It's about a race of alien warriors who have the ability to recover from battle (just up to the point of death) in a way that makes them more powerful than they were before. They are a dominant and imposing force in the universe, and they are so powerful that they routinely send their infants to other planets, in order to grow upon those planets, take over them or destroy them. One of these infants came to Earth. This boy is raised and trained by a kindly martial arts master and proves to have an ability to progress in strength and fighting ability faster than humans. The master teaches the cocky youngster temperance and how to have a good heart; reversing the boy's genetic disposition to conquer and destroy. Goku then goes on to enter martial arts tournaments and beat the greatest fighters in the world. Over time, more aliens tend to come to Earth, in search of Dragon Balls, which scatter across the planet and grant their finder 1 wish, once they are all found, collected and brought together. Famous objects of legend, throughout the cosmos, ET's of all types of unimaginable power levels come to Earth, looking for the dragon balls - usually to wish for immortality. So the little alien boy and the other strongest fighters in the world become the world's protectors (The Z Fighters) and fight all the invading aliens over the years.
You essentially get to watch Goku grow up from being this marginally stronger little boy into a super power capable of tearing worlds apart, fighting villains from other planets who that can do the same. There are so many episodes and side stories to the whole franchise, that it's hard not to enjoy some of them. You have the arrogant Prince of the race of aliens of which Goku is apart of - who comes to finish the job that Goku didn't do (destroying the Earth), and comes to find himself doomed to spend countless years ahead with the knowledge that he simply remains too weak to beat Goku hanging over him. He's just one of those classic characters that you can't help but love to hate. Iconic, after you've watched enough of his history to kinda sympathize with him. And then you have the Prince's son, who comes back from the Future to help the Z Fighters (and his future dad), who has to learn to cope with the fact that his dad is an egocentric prick that doesn't give a shit about him, when all the kid wants to do is make him proud. It really does have some great characters, and watching them all go through what they go through, over such long periods of time, while basically being walking nuclear reactors that can grow to harness enough power to shatter a planet, is pretty cool shit. Heh.
The super-speed fighting is a huge draw for me, as I said. It was really heavy in Dragon Ball and early Dragon Ball Z. But the more powerful the characters the got, the more they started relying on their energy blasts, instead of the sick, technical, martial arts inspired melee that I love so much. It's not necessarily a bad thing, because a lot of the energy-based fighting is just completely insane, but I always seemed to love it more when they got down to it and just started going hand to hand and are phasing around the terrain so fast that the humans can't even see them. Everything happens so fast and with such explosive consequences that you can just feel the energy and epicness (for lack of a better word) of the fights. I like that most of the power is just based off of the simple (and widely-accepted) principle of Ki (chi). It gives the whole thing a truly martial artistic base. Goku's tempered, light-hearted and altruistic way of reaching his ever-increasing levels of power is completely different from Vegeta's bullish, prideful and self-loathing path - and the story takes enough care to show how that affects their levels of progress, over time - but it's what keeps pushing them forward, and against each other. It eventually reveals them to be a specific type of being, which had been legendary throughout the universe, ages before their time.
Just good shit, if you ask me.
Believe me, though, there is a lot that I don't like about it. A lot. However, the stuff that I do like about it is just amazing. Believe it or not, some of the more dramatic moments are just so large-scale and weighty that you can't help but get sucked into it. :putemuppunk:
When I was a kid I thought it was insanely good so now I just like it because its nostalgic. There is no plot, senseless fighting, corny dialogue, and horrible dubbing but thats kinda what makes it great. If I didnt grow up watching it and watched it now I would probably think it is absurd but like I said the nostalgia is the biggest reason why I can watch those vids Oneironaut posted and grin like a school girl. I havent watched Firefly but Star Trek is a great show.
Also the guy that says "next time on dragonball z!" is the tits.
Watching it now I am.
Oh god yes. All these years later and I still hear that echoing inside my head, occasionally, I even say it out loud. It won't be long before I let it slip during sex.

They've got a different guy doing the intros but 00:20 - 00:23 makes up for it. xD
I used to be like the #1 Naruto fan and watch anime all the time. When I was 10 years old.
I look back now and wonder why i was so entertained by this stuff, because I just see the same thing in most anime.
So yea I'm on the same page as you, I just don't really get anime in general. I don't hate it or have a problem with people watching it, I just don't really get it.
Dragon Ball Z is my Favorite show! You could probably tell by my picture haha While most people had Star Wars, I had Dragon Ball Z:D If you would ask me why i liked it, I honestly wouldn't be able to tell you. It's just all around freakin awesome in my opinion!:D The only bad part of the series to me was how long it took for Goku to actually kill Freeza
I loved it. When I was growing up it was probably my biggest obsession. But even then some of the episodes were annoying because they spent so long on different fights and building up the fight with pointless dialogue instead of action. Everything took a long time to happen. It wasn't as annoying as the over-used flashback scenes in Naruto though.
God, I used to love DBZ!!! My favourite character was definitely Vegeta! :D
Yeah' since I was young I watch dragon ball even now I'm on my 20's I still watch it! My favorite characters are Pan, majin boo(fat) and trunks:)
Yeah!!! Ever since I was young! I like fat majin buu from all of goku's villains >.<
No!!! :D It's such a stupid cartoon. They are just yelling and making unarticulated sounds. I got sick of that kinda cartoons where there is only violence and yelling. Especially cartoons that are kind of like Dragon Ball Z. It is so boring and stupid.
