Thread: Top 5 best/favorite video games

I'm curious what everyone's opinions on the best video games are. And also I'm hoping to find some new games to play .

1. Half Life - Best FPS ever made. Period.
2. Quake - Better level design than Half Life, and if it weren't for this Valve may not exist.
3. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - Amazing Action RPG. The first and best 3D Zelda.
4: Starcraft - Best RTS evar, great balance, outstanding replay value.
5. Portal - Best puzzle game in existence, the only downside is the short length.
Honorable mentions: Super Mario Bros 3, Tetris, Final Fantasy 6, Mega Man X

What are your opinions on the best games ever?

1. Twisted Metal: Black (ps2) Best car combat game ever made. Awesome graphics, style, music, environment, everything. The levels are the these huge free roam areas where you drive around picking up different weapons and ammo, then you have to destroy all the other cars to win the level. There's so many secret areas and stuff, and the game is HARD. But I like games that are really challenging, it makes it more satisfying, you really have to practice on the level and get good with the weapons.

2. Gears of War series (xbox 360) Yeah that's not much that I need to say about this one, I'm sure you've played it or at least heard of it. I love how immersive these games are, when I play through the campaign I just get lost in it.

3. Midnight Club: LA (ps3, xbox 360) A driving game. It's a HUUGEE free roam around Los Angeles, you can go wherever you want, tons of secret areas and whatnot. The graphics are really good. There's different challenges you can accept besides just racing, and when you win money you can upgrade to better parts and cars and vehicle stats. There's also a really nice car editor where you can change everything from the steering wheel to the body kit. There's also power-ups you can get, which are pretty sick. One of them lets you go in super slow-mo to weave around cars, or move if you're about to crash. With a motorcycle you can actually ride under semi-trucks.

4. Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos (PC) Oldie but a goody. Awesome campaign mode, and the online community is still there. I logged onto battle.net a week ago and found a match in less than 30 seconds. It's a strategy game where you build a base and then train soldiers to go over and destroy your opponents army and base.

5. Mortal Kombat: Deception (ps2, gamecube) If you have a gamecube, then get that version, it comes with 2 exclusive characters the ps2 version doesn't have: Goro and Shao Kahn. IMO, the best 3D MK, and the Konquest mode is amazing. It's a free roam around all the different realms, and this big grand story plays out. If you're an MK fan it's pretty awesome, but if you don't give a shit about the storyline of MK then you won't like it.

1. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 - Awesome FPS, excellent multiplayer, downside being a few crashes here and there.
2. Assassin's Creed (Trilogy) - Really good series. Strenght points are the storyline, the environment and the free running animations.
3. Minecraft - Downside is the graphic; for the rest it's very well-done and can hold you to the computer for a while.
4. Crash Bash - Old game for Playstation X, it was the best game I've ever played for console.
5. All Points Bulletin (Customization) - It had the best customization for character/vehicle/music/images. For the rest it wasn't that good.

Starcraft2, what an awesome game, the Zergs are my favourite. Did you watch the Global Starcraft II League tournament on GOM TV? I've also played Diablo2 and Monkey Island. I'm playing Portal at the moment and League of Legends, oh and a bit of Minecraft. I might give Oblivion a go soon to.

I watched the one where FruitDealer won, I haven't been keeping up with Starcraft either as of late, I just really enjoyed watching it when FruitDealer was playing on the Starcraft II League tournament. I loved his play style and how unpredictable he was. I also enjoyed listening to Tasteless and Artosis commentate.

I've probably only played about 10 in my life.. I love games but I rarely bring myself to buy new ones.

Oblivion is probably the best I've played. I've finally gotten sick of it through after finally realizing that almost all of the quests require you to do almost exactly the same thing with different stories and dialog.

But I've been playing Left 4 Dead 2, although it isn't the type of thing I'd normally like, I guess I like the online aspect and having a few friends online who I can play with. So that's currently the game that entertains me the most.

StarCraft series (PC) - best competitive games. Simply a brilliant game with an absolutely amazing community. Sometimes I can't describe in words how amazed I am by what StarCraft has accomplished.
Battlefield 2 (PC) - best team FPS. I like the entire BF series, perhaps except for the Bad Company spin-off. Battlefield 2 is particularly amazing, because people actually teamworked, even on pubs. Still has an active community.
Unreal Tournament series (PC) - best arena shooter FPS. Has incredible weapons, unique movement mechanics and probably the biggest modding community, short of Half-Life.
Portal - (PC) most people know Portal. Everything about it is perfect.
Amnesia: The Dark Descent (PC) - incredible indie horror game. Probably the single most scary experience I've ever had. Fantastic game.

I think it's a shame to call anything the best game though. New games come all the time and I'm pretty sure Portal 2 will soon be on my list, as well as Battlefield 3.

I've been a little out of touch with the gaming world lately so most of my favorite games are kinda old.
Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time is probly my all-time favorite game. Even now days I can pick it up and have just as much fun as I did 12 years ago when I got it.

Dragon Ball Z games are always good. The Legacy of Goku series for the GBA (if anyone remembers that thing) were really great games, and the Budokai games were amazing too if you're a DBZ fan. Though I only played the first two of those, I'm sure the others that followed were amazing too.

I've always been a fan of Pokemon since I was a kid, and every now and then I'll get an emulator for ruby/saffire and firered/leafgreen that I always get some entertainment out of.

Another one I can think of off the top of my head is Final Fantasy Chrystal Chronicles, the multilayer FF for the Gamecube. I remember playing that at my friends house until morning every night during the summer, that was one hell of a game haha.

My last game would have to be Fable for the xbox. I never played any of the sequels, but the first one was one of my all-time favorite RPGs, next to the first Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic maybe.

Like Dianeva, I don't really but many games, but I do enjoy playing them.

1.Oblivion (ps3) - I haven't played much of it and haven't ever gotten past level 15 or so before I make a new character. I'm currently experimenting with levelling techniques, though it gets tedious pretty quickly. I'm currently playing a thief, I like sneaking about.

2. Legend of Zelda - Twilight Princess (wii) - I haven't played any other LoZ games, but this game has an awesome storyline. I love the characters and the layout... Just everything. Although dungeons really frustrate me after a time. I prefer more of the stuff inbetween.

3. Assassin's Creed 2 (ps3) - I played the first one but I think everyone knows how that went (repetitive) but I completed it anyway. I've played a bit of the second but haven't completed it. The Truth kinda freaked me out. I'm a big scaredy cat

4. Spyro 3 (ps1 )- Oh my effing god I freakin' love this game. I just love Spyro in general. Spyro is what got me into playing video games, other than my brother. Just... Gaaahhh!!! He's too damn cute.

5. Does Pokemon on the gameboy count? Because I used to love it and still play it occasionally. If not I'll say Mirror's Edge for ps3, because I love chase games without much shooting.

I really need to buy a new game.

I see some good games here, but waaaaay too many post ps2 games. New games don't have shit on the classics! Retro for life...

1. Resident Evil 2 (PS1) - By far my favorite game of all time. There is a large gap between this game and number 2. This game needs a PS3/360 remake...

2. Shadow of the Colossus (PS2) - I had no idea what to expect from this game, and it blew me away. This game is absolutely awesome. If you haven't played it yet, DO IT!

3. Mega Man (NES) - The first was the best of the series and also the hardest.

4. Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World (SNES combo cart) - I wanted to pick a Mario game here, but couldn't decided which one, so I took the easy way out. Mario Allstars was already awesome, but adding Mario World to the cart made it otherworldly.

5. Socom 2 online (PS2) - Best online shooter I have ever and will ever play. Nothing will surpass the feeling and hours of fun/addiction I got from this game.

This was a great game, but I thought 3 was better. Introducing Rush, Protoman, and Sliding made the game much more fun in my opinion.

Final Fantasy XII (PS2)

This is a joke right? 12 was by far the worst FF I've played. Even FF Legends for the Gameboy was better.
After typing this I looked up the reviews it got, and it looks like a lot of people loved it. Receiving a 92 from MetaCritic. I'm extremely surprised, however I was also surprised that FF9 has a higher score than FF7 ...

I am not going to lie, I wasn't big on the story line in FFXII, but I loved just about everything else about it. This game was absolutely loaded with content a part from the story. The "Marked Hunts" side quest is like a game within the game and is my favorite side quest of any Final Fantasy to date. I loved how they mixed up the enemy encounters. I wish more console RPGs had this type of enemy encounter system. Plus this game was loaded with hidden weapons, enemies, items, just full of content. Plus, it has the hardest battles of all the final fantasy games. I love FFVII, but Emerald, Ruby, and Sephiroth couldn't hold a candle to Elder Wyrm, Zodiark, Omega, and Yiazmat. I love some challenge. I think a lot of people didn't give FFXII a chance...hell I didn't even mind the gambit system. I should have put FFXII in my top 5, but I had to show some love to Socom 2 online. Spent tooo many hours on that bitch.

My top five Final Fantasy order goes like this, FFXII, FFVII, FFVI, FFX, FFIX

I like the entire Mega Man series and the X series, but the original was the most challenging. That is mainly why it gets the vote. I'm a retro game collector and have all 6 NES Mega Mans and many of the X's, but I find myself reaching for the original more often than not.

Indeed, retro games are great, but I feel that more recent games constantly surpass them. For example, I think now that Doom is a really bad/boring game. I think Super Meat Boy is much more fun than Super Mario Brothers. StarCraft II is better than Brood War. It's very rare to see an old game that actually remains really good. Most of the time, better games, with the same core concept, will be made. The old games of course have value, in that they progressed they the "art", but you still have to recognise that often times new games are simply better than old games. It is of course entirely subjective though.
The latest generation of games, I suppose this is what people call the 7th generation, has been really bad. Most of it is sequels or clones. Only a few new original IPs have seen the dawn of light, and a lot of those have actually been amazing. Most of them indie too. I'm thinking here of games like Amnesia, Killing Floor, Super Meat Boy, Braid, League of Legends, Audiosurf. There are of course also great games from major developers, like Mirror's Edge and Portal. What I'm basically trying to say, is that a lot of people seem stuck in the past, clinging on to what they know. I think that's a shame.

edit: of course, I'm a PC gamer. I might have a different look at things than console gamers.

Nah, I wouldn't say I'm stuck in the past at all. I still play all the newer games and enjoy the the good ones, but better graphics and complexity doesn't mean the game is better. Super Meat Boy is a great game, but saying it is better than Super Mario Brothers is absurd. I agree that some games do not age well, like Doom you mentioned above. I agree in that aspect. Braid is also an excellent game. I am a big fan of the Indie games. Most of them are like you said, advanced versions of the classic style. Amnesia was good, but it was made to scare. It still didn't scare me as much as say Fatal Frame II or Hellnight. Those two games were much scarier than Amnesia and graphics do not play much of factor in my view towards a good game. FPS is an exception. Mirror's Edge was a beautiful and fun game, but it was gimicky to show off the environments...way too easy as well. Portal is an excellent game and would make my top 25 list. Why is it absurd? I personally think it is much better. It is much more difficult, it's longer and you can make new content for it.

I disagree here. Graphics and physics play a huge role in Amnesia.

FPS is an exception. Mirror's Edge was a beautiful and fun game, but it was gimicky to show off the environments...way too easy as well.

Mirror's Edge is in many ways like Portal, in that it sort of tested the water, checking if people actually liked that kind of innovation. The biggest issue with ME was that DICE didn't release the SDK for the game, so producing new content wasn't possible. Technically, the game is nearly perfect. Very few bugs, if at all any.

Portal is an excellent game and would make my top 25 list. Retro games are more about just being the progression of the art. Many of them represent perfection for their day and age. There are no games around now days that are perfect for this age...none.

That older games seem to be perfect probably has more to do with the fact that they have way less features, than modern games do. It is harder to develop a game in this day and age, because games simply have many more sides to them. You have to make infrastructure for all the online features, advanced interface for all kinds of things, and generally much more extensive art work.
This is the natural progression of games in my opinion.

Crysis, Portal, Mirror's Edge, Left 4 Dead, Super Meat Boy, Half-Life 2: Episode 2, StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty, Amnesia: The Dark Decsent, Audiosurf, Braid, Machinarium (great game, check it out). The list goes on. These are all games that I consider more or less perfect. They have very few issues, the gameplay is brilliant, visually they are astounding and the community around them is great. Also generally really good pricing on all of them.

Delaying your game extensively to create harder difficulties isn't economically a good idea. Most of the hard games you will run into today are multiplayer games though. The game is hard, because your opponents are good. I get the sense that you are mostly a singeplayer gamer though, so I understand your issue. Have you tried I Wanna Be The Guy and Super Meat Boy?

I'm only commenting on the games I've played. Crysis was far from perfect, the enemies were underpowered and the Nano suit was extremely overpowered. Portal was close, but lacked difficulty and length. L4D was damn good, Valve is the main exception as they almost always produce high quality games. This is exactly the problem. Game developers would rather make money than high quality games.

Eh, I actually used to play L4D and TF2 a lot. I played with a good group of 4 in L4D and we rarely lost. There were a couple teams we would frequently played that were a challenge, but everyone else we played was a stomp. The problem with Multiplayer is the difficulty normally stems from the inadequacy of your own team rather than the skill of the opponent.

Have you tried I Wanna Be The Guy and Super Meat Boy?

I've played IWBTG and it's damn hard and a great game. I beat 4 bosses and quit on Bowser/Toad/Willy I plan on going back at some point, but just haven't picked it up again. I haven't tried Super Meat Boy I'll have to check it out.

Also, I like Tomb Raider - all of them (except for Guardian of Light, havent played it but it looks horrible. Birds-eye-view gameboy-style != Tomb Raider) The ones before Legend are better in a way because they're longer and have harder puzzles, and are actually a challenge unlike Legend and Underworld which were more like interactive movies. But Legend and Underworld are beautiful to look at, and it's a fun experience to play just for the scenery, and Lara is sexy and nice to look at.

I played Spyro 2, years ago, and it was great. It seems that games, when I was younger, had certain involved atmospheres to them which I still get a bit when I think about them. While with newer games I don't get those original atmospheres. With Spryo, or Pokemon on gameboy, or Doom, for each I felt this distinct feeling which I can't describe, sort of like when involved dreams have distinct 'atmospheres' to them sometimes. I don't know whether it's because I'm aging, or because, for some reason, bad graphics cause original atmospheres.

Amnesia is well made and good at scaring, and I'm continuing to play it because I want to have passed it, but since the experience isn't enjoyable I can't say I like it. It's probably the least 'fun' game I've played.

I guess if I were forced to write a list:
1) Oblivion
2) Tomb Raider
3) Left 4 Dead 2
4) Rollercoaster Tycoon 3
5) Starcraft 2

I also don't like playing scary games. I much prefer ones with gorgeous scenary (though not all the time), music, where I can hone my skills and feel like I'm progressing as a character. To the point where I feel smug because I can kick everyone's butts, after my hard work of course...

I find that games nowadays are good, but I dunno... The ones I've got for ps3 (which aren't a lot I have to say) are mostly short and repetitive. They don't really have much impact on me, I don't walk away from them with that after-feeling. I like good graphics, though I'll happily play a ps2 or even ps1 game without getting annoyed, as long as it's good.

Most of the actually good games this generation are on the PC. Most of the time, good games, that are released on PC and consoles, will be best on the PC.

Ah, I see the main difference between us. I'm a console gamer all the way...always have been. I play a few PC games simply because there aren't console versions (like Amnesia). All good though, I respect the PC gamer side of an argument.

I suppose saying "absurd" was a bit uncalled for . I like Super Meat Boy a lot, especially the challenge. My main problem with it is the way it goes about that challenge. The way it is designed, you are literally expected/supposed to die and to die often. Which is good and all, but with unlimited lives, life isn't very important. It least it isn't as trial and error as "I want to be the guy." It is just no super mario brothers to me, gameplay-wise.

I'm not big on FPS style games. Never got into Half Life, though I understand its significance with the FPS genre. Played Crisis, but just not really a FPS guy. The only reason I even play CoD is because I'm good at it. I don't even bother with offline FPS, I play strictly online multiplayer. FPS just isn't my thing. My favorite shooters are all 3rd Person shooters.

I never played Machinarium, I will have to check it out. Left 4 Dead was fun for a week or so and then got really boring. Though, I have only played the console versions. Don't know if there is much difference, but I imagine there is at least a content difference with PC. Left 4 Dead was pretty buggy and glitchy as well. Pretty easy exploit from what I remember. Never really cared too much for it.
