There are two kind of expectations, ones you have consciously formulated and know of (E.g - the teacher is not in the room maybe she is out today) and unconscious expectations that form our view of life, schema I believe (E.g - its brown and big, its a boulder). So it is not possible to be fully aware of all your expectations in at any time, so when something happens that you were not focusing on it is referred to as unexpected but it might not have been (in the case of the guy who stopped waggoner flying, maybe his dream went that way because in his unconscious evalution of movies a guy always seems to take down whoever is flying around etc which was reflected into the dream)
