Well you tell me a better way to take a photo of yourself using your phone and i will use it. I use the "myspace angle" to get a lil distance..... Nobody likes a close-up. Wouldnt wanna mentally scar you like that.

Seriously people, it's not a big of a deal if a person has to use a certain angle to take a picture. The world isn't going to be filled with nanomachines that want to kill every fiber of your being.

To be honest, just let Nito, or ANYONE for that matter, do whatever the heck they want. It's just a picture, unless of course, everyone wants to see each other's private parts.

Other than that, it seems trivial to bicker about angles on photos, everyone is going to live. Gosh darn it. It's just a picture lol

Is it just me, or are people running out of things to worry or pester about in a forum that's already awesome as is.

Soon, people are going to complain on how long a DJ entry should be, man, just get along with each other, or at least just keep it to yourself, there shouldn't be speculation on how to take a picture lol.

Lifting the arm up doesn't change the distance. So your logic is wrong.

Actually I was wrong. From his shoulder it doesn't change the distance. From his face, it decreases it

But yeah, it certainly doesn't increase it.

To clarify about my avatar face, that really was just for one day only. I was being sarcastic about it being normal but it was AWESOME.

I'm a singer/song writer. I play quite a bit of piano too. That day in particular I was shooting a video for a sociology project for school. We had to choose a different lifestyle and document it. I love all music but recently have been listening to a lot of rap.. soooo naturally I chose "rap star". I got to act like a drunk, obnoxious, loud nuisance the entire day. Probably the best way to do homework. ever. Got an A on the project btw. lol

OK. I thought about this and thought about it and tried to figure out how to persuade you.

Here we go.

If your head is height h above your shoulder and we normalize everything so the length of your arm is one then the square of the distance between your face and the camera (assuming your shoulder is at the origin) is given by the formula

(h - sin@)^2 + cos^2@

We want to maximize this function of @ on the interval [-pi/2, pi/2]

Expand it out to

h^2 - 2hsin@ + sin^2@ + cos^2@

and remember the pythagorean identies to get

h^2 - 2hsin@ + 1.

Taking the derivative yields

-2hcos@.

Setting this equal to zero and solving for @ yields the values of -pi/2 and pi/2.

Taking the second derivative (2hsin@) at the two values yields -2h and 2h respectively.

So the distance is decreasing from your arm being straight down to your arm being straight over your head.

If your true goal is to maximize the distance, then you should just have your arm going straight down in front of you and point the camera up.

Don't think that's a good photo angle? Don't ask a mathematician for help on something practical. And for the sake of completeness, I should note that it's assumed throughout that h is positive, i.e. your head is above your shoulder. If you have some weird condition or something then things will be reversed.

Ok I'm not going to bother to quote that, I'm gonna be honest I didn't even bother to read a lot of it.

I just wanted to make sure that you knew that my argument only works if your head is in fact above your shoulder. If not then things will be reversed and the myspace angle is indeed close to the optimal choice for maximizing distance
