      Urination dream sign.

I've done this enough times now to know it's a 100% reliable dream sign, for me at least. When you urinate yet feel no relief, it means you are dreaming!

I've done this in lucids before with the same result. Take a pee and notice that, even though I see the stream and hear the splashing, I never feel the relief. The same has held consistently true for non-lucids, like the one I just awoke from. I've had a bunch of non-lucid dreams where I have to pee so I find a bathroom and do so. The thing is, I never feel the relief aspect of the event.

In non-lucids where you pee but never end up feeling the relief as though you did, it means that you have to pee in real life. You peed in the dream because your physical body feels the urge. Yet, you don't feel as though you've peed because your physical body still has the urge to go. Odds are, you'll eventually wake up having to pee.

So... if you pee in a dream then think "it still feels like I have to go", you are dreaming. It's weird how, even though I've felt like I still had to go in many dreams, since the stream has cut off, I just go on my way and think nothing of it: even though it still feels like I have to go pee.

Now, if I could only remember this (partly why I'm making this topic) I can use this as a very reliable (albeit somewhat infrequent) dream sign. And now you can too.

Hehe, have you been reading my DJ lately? It's full of pee LOL

I agree with you that this is a good and reliable dream sign. Thanks for writing it down, I hope this also helps you in remembering.
Did you find my topic on improving your prospective memory? There's a task list that helps to train you in remembering dream signs

In the view of feeling physical 'relief' I would like to add drinking: If I'm thirsty in a dream I just can't get satisfied (or full) by drinking glass after glass... (usually when I drank to much alcohol before sleeping )

No. But I'll have to look for it.

      Make a method about that.

Whenever you go for a pee, do a reality check.

Drink a lot of water before you go to bed and you'll pee in the dream (hopefully) and then you'll reality check and become lucid.

Well done for finding that out, Oneironaught.

Yeah i get that too but never really used it as a dream sign. Nonetheless, just make sure you don't actually pee in real life. hahahah

Freud describes a similar technique for lucid dreaming in his Interpretation of Dreams.

      - Drink a lot of water before retiring to bed.
      - Fall asleep
      - When you dream about water flowing, or drinking, etc., use it as a dream sign to know that you are dreaming.

This is becaue the feeling of the need to urinate has somatic manifestations in dream content.

The problem with this technique; potential to wet the bed.

      Enjoy!

Another problem --you are probably going to wake up right away and ruin your dream, because you have to go pee.

I guess it depends on how badly you've got to go. On many occasions I've waken up in the night and have felt the need to go but, since it might not be too bad, I've gone back to bed. So maybe a working balance can be found.

I had a dream just last night where I had to go...and ended out doing so in a plastic grocery bag at the front seat of my van! And it was just so natural that I would pee (and poop) in a plastic sack. It may be a good idea to do a reality check when going. Though for me, when I go in a dream, it's usually a very unusual place. Like a public facility with no stall doors, or in the van like last night. I may just do reality checks whenever I have to go anywhere besides home. I don't dream of my current home right now. Just past ones or other places. Maybe that will help me get back on the dreaming track. I've been slacking for some time, not being able to get on for around a year.

You lost the bet. I'm not talking about trying to sleep when your bladder is about to burst. If you have to go bad enough that you can't even rest then, obviously, go to the bathroom and relieve yourself.

You do realise that your body has mechanisms to prevent someone with normal bladder control from wetting their bed... right? If not, you'd wake up to a wet bed nearly every single morning.

A common dream sign is having to pee but not being able to find a restroom. This is a good time to do a RC and become lucid.

Which takes my thoughts to my baby who wakes up with a wet diaper every morning. She has parts that are still trying to work properly. I am very glad for the mechanisms in place you speak of, Oneironaught. I'd had dreams that I had to go, and when I woke up, I was surprised I did not wake up wet. (Unless I wake up in a sweat as I'd done. Then I begin to wonder about myself)

Wouldn't work for me. Every time I dreamt I was going to the loo I actually wet myself. It happened only twice, but boy, was that embarrassing!

I got lucid because of this thread last night. Unfortunately it only lasted a moment, and then I was soon distracted by the reading material available.

That reminds me of the first time I decided to try peeing in a lucid dream. I'll admit that I didn't know what to expect but I did suspect that the body would be able to distinguish my lucid piss from a desire to do so in real life. As I stood there watching the stream hit the water and hearing the splashing sounds, I realised that I didn't feel the sensation at all. Nor did I ever feel physical relief. That gave me confidence that I was - in fact - not wetting the bed, which was a great relief in itself

Eventually, I just gave up, cut off the stream and went on to do other things I had lined up.

How young were you at the time? It's possible that children may have a problem if they are relatively fresh out of diapers. If you were older when that happened then I don't know what to say. It's may be that some people need to be more cautious than others.

Again I suspect that the urgency of the urination may play a big part in your decision of whether you actually get up and go to the restroom or sleep it out.

Ahh, glad we could be of assistance, even if only for a moment. So was it this clue that triggered lucidity or was it a more generic memory of the thread that did it?

I actually can't seem to pee in a dream. So my version of that dreamsign is that I visit bathrooms, often multiple times, and never actually get around to peeing.

No dream goals at the moment...just flying and letting stuff happen is kinda fun, and it's hard to motivate myself to try LDing lately.

I'm glad you pointed that out. I presented one version (my personal most common) of the sign but it's worthwhile for others to realise that they may have their own unique version of the same phenomena. After all, we each can sense the urge to go to the bathroom even while we sleep. It's a fundamental biological faculty for most - if not all - animals. So it's only natural that the sensation sometimes influences the dream world.

Well, I'm not sure. It was funny--the lucidity didn't last because I got distracted by a pile of papers that were by the toilet, and when I read them they were print-outs from DV (task of the month thread.) So it was all connected. How I could lose lucidity because I started reading something from DV is beyond my waking comprehension.

      Next time...
