I'm not sure if/how light/darkness effects dream recall.
If you don't wake up directly from a dream, or up to maybe 5 min after it ends, there is a little chance that you will recall it in the morning, since it will get overwritten by your last dream.
If you like to remember more of your dreams, you can do something to wake yourself up in REM or right after. Either drink water (will wake you up for potty), set up an alarm (a gentle one, nothing too harsh), repeat a mantra to wake you up or to inhance your memory.
And of course, keep a dream journal. The more you think about your dream, better your recall will get. Does this help?
