      Baffling and troubling dream...

I have recently gone through some emotional turmoil... Recently I have felt that my heart has been rent out of my chest by a meat hook or something... But I had this dream last night that was very vivid and seemed to have some meaning to it, though I wasn't sure what that meaning was. Please help me out...

      The dream was this...

I was pursuing a particular young woman, whom I very much admired, when she went through a small door in the building that we were in. (I think the building was some kind of university or something.) And when I tried to follow, many people started coming out of the door, so I went through another, smaller door that lead to the same room. The whole time I was clinging to a book. (I am not sure what the book was about, but for some reason I felt some strong attatchment to it.) The room I came into was filled with chairs and people. The people were walking around as if it was the beginning of a class or something. I saw the young woman on the other side of the room sitting down next to, and talking to, a young man that I knew but was unsure where I knew him from. I wanted to sit next to the young woman so I started walking to that side of the room, when an old friend from high school (again I wasn't sure who he was, only that he was an old friend.) started directing me by pushing me along. I stopped at the row of chairs in which the young woman was sitting and my high school friend stopped pushing me and went on his way after he relized that I was wanting to sit there. There was an empty seat next to the young woman that I had resolved to sit in, but as I walked down the row, a tall man dressed in white brushed past me and said, "I think this belongs to me." At the same moment as hearing his voice, I felt someone tugging on the book in my hand. The man walked past me and sat two seats away from the young woman. I was somewhat angry because he had grabbed my book, and I resolved to talk to him about it. But as I passed the young woman, I could go no further. I thought that the man had a hold of my book, but he was sitting two seats down the row, so I turned to see the young woman tightly grasping my book. I politely said to her, "Please let go, just for a minute. There is a man who is trying to take my book from me." She just stared at me with a determined look in her eyes....

As soon as this happened my alarm clock woke me up. And as soon as I awoke, I was struck by a realization.... While I slept, I had thought that the book was mine, and that the tall man in white was trying to take it from me. But once I woke up, I immediately became aware that the book belonged the the tall man in white, and the young woman was the one trying to take it from me....

Well that's about as much detail as I can remember. Can anyone help me to understand this?

Books can often mean knowledge. But the meaning of the book may be different for you.

How do you feel about/in relation to the various characters in your dream?

In relation to the high school friend... Somewhat annoyed that he noticed me and was pushing me. In relation to the young man that I wasn't sure where I knew him from... His presence caused no emotion. In relation to the young woman... I felt like I would do anything for her. In relation to the tall man in white... Intense anger that he thought the book was his and tried to take it (which I later realized he did not.). After the dream I was a little disturbed by the angry, determined look the young woman gave me, and I felt better about the tall man in white (he seemed to not be angry at me at all).

I also remembered that when the young woman was trying to pull the book away from me, I noticed that the book was white with gold letters (which were peeling off, and I could not read them). And the book looked somewhat old.
