A'hoy hoy,
Through my studies of interpretaiton of dreams and the psychoanalysis of dreams, the key to interpretation is understanding free association. Regardless whether or not you believe psychoanalysis can truly define dreams, it will still help in any belief you have of what the meaning behind dreams are.
The point of free association is to understanding the relation of memories and thoughts when a certain subject/person/etc. is brought up. In any belief of what dreams are, they can all agree that dreams represent themselves in dream-content to manifest a profound amount of dream-thoughts (or messages, etc.). The dream-content is a condensed manifestation of the plethora of dream-thoughts that interpretation reveals. Thus, free association is the quintessential key to understanding these dream-thoughts from the dream-content.
In other words, when you think of a dream and what the content reminds you of, nothing you think of or are reminded of is irrelevant. Everything the content makes you think plays a quintessential role into understanding the dream-thoughts behind the dream manifestation.
Example: baesball unifrom-number 77-my ruby-I love her-fantasies for the future, etc.
This is an image I saw once in my dreams that I did not exactly understand at first, but it boiled down to my ruby (my gf) and my feelings for her. This ellucidates why free association is easily one of the most important keys to dream interpretation.
Hopefully I explained this well. Feel free to ask anything.
I hope I have been enlightening.
