If you care to share, how might you see smoking cigarettes as a way of managing your ADHD? If you are correct on your associations, and if they feel right then they are certainly in the right "ballpark", then what might this dream be saying about how you understand your ADHD and your smoking habit are inter-related?
From the dream it would seem that smoking is "helping" but it is not improving things either. You are at a stalemate.
And again if this association is correct perhaps you can focus in on the swords as a representation of you and the giant. The details regarding the differences in the swords are interesting...the giant has a large sword with a dangling chain on one side and you have a small sword that is black, twisted and has no tang which, as I understand it, is the handle! So as you say "don't have a handle on" seems very appropriate.
Whereas you and the giant are two inner voices in your psyche, the swords are tools and represent, perhaps, ways of consciously taking action that are somewhat standardized (made into a particular tool). This giant may be a shadow figure with respect to your ego...you are taking on opposing roles but there is also a sort of mutual cooperation and even respect...he agrees to a truce and you determine to go in search of a new approach (sword). As such this dream involves the relationship between your conscious attitude (ego) and another voice that is also you but is often unchosen. It is probably not your ADHD personified per se but another or related aspect of your psychological experience that is "conflated" with your experience of your ADHD. Your ego "chose" smoking in opposition, perhaps, to your shadow.
Actually I might reverse this...given that the ego is typically the biggest voice in your psyche, this dream might represent you as shadow trying to do combat with your ego. The sword you hold is smaller and black (having less light or psychic energy) and not having a means to control it (relatively unconscious). All of this points to the experience of the shadow rather than the ego. As such this dream reflects an experience of acting out of your weaker nature. The day before your dream you may have experienced as one of general defeat in light of your general attitude and goals or you got off on the wrong foot somehow that day. Some particular experience IMO represents the spark that later "lit up" this dream for you and identifying that would go a long way toward connecting this dream further into your sense of meaning.
