I will first give a very careful and tentative interpretations of the symbols in this dream, and then give my own personal opinion on what the dream may mean for you. Please be aware that I don't know about your current life situation, nor do I necessarily know what all of these symbols may mean to you, so feel free to veto anything I say below. That said, here is what I think:
Well that is certainly an erie ending.
I am not sure how to interpret but there are few generalizations I can give you in my own Jungian interpretation of these symbols:
- The house/outside.
Usually any buildings you walk into or live in inside a dream are a symbol. It sort of depends on how you felt in the dream, and your real life situation (as Freud often said "sometimes a cigar is just a cigar" so I don't want to over-analyse) but I would say in this dream the house is your consciousness. The outside is the unconscious.
- The cat
The cat symbolizes unconscious content. If the house is consciousness, then therefore the cat coming inside symbolizes some information being moved from the "dark" into the "light", from unconscious to conscious. If you feared for the life of this cat and felt the need to save it, you could say that at the very least your unconscious is trying to tell you to heed its messages
- 2 cats becoming 3 cats
So we've established that unconscious content is trying to make its way into your consciousness. To make sense of the 2 cats already present in your house, I am going to say that they are a symbol for some sort of conscious content. Maybe a problem that you have been worrying over trying to figure out a resolution for. If the later is the case, then I get the sense that your current picture of the problem will not be complete until you let the 3rd cat in, maybe some repressed or forgotten content/denied possibilities, and only then will be able to solve it.
Triads/trinities are always a meaningful symbol in literature, fairy tales, dreams, and especially religious texts. My own personal interpretation is that you are, or were, a Christian and the cats symbolize the holy trinity. Your shadow-self is trying to tell you that your current conscious state is incomplete, and that you are ignoring the shadow archetype. In Christianity there is generally no room for the shadow archetype, as it is often viewed as satanic. But if you do not confront it, it will continue to grow and become monstrous; and it will manifest itself as you unconsciously project it onto those around you.
Please let me know what you think!
