Into the soul of the world

I wrote this down as soon as I was semi-awake...

I am sat at the top of a very tall building, with friends from a long time ago. We are overlooking the world, or at least a portion of it, and there are big, rotating bright mirrors that reflect off other mirrors in other places, acting as messaging devices.

Beneath us there is a body of water, and some steps into the water. People are already in there swimming, enjoying themselves. A guy, an old acquaintance, asks me if I want to dive in with him and I tell him I can't swim (which is true in reality - I have a fear of deep water). Without much more thought, however, we take off our clothes and hold each other tightly before taking a leap into the water, which to my surprise is fairly shallow, and my feet actually touch the bottom. The water is warm. Familiar faces pass us, smiling. The whole environment is very calm and serene, and the sun is shining - it's an extremely bright light, but it isn't blinding.

When I am safe, I split from my friend to find my ex and an old love of his, standing together in a corner. I know I haven't seen them in years (in reality, he lives locally and we see one another almost daily). He is looking older (he's almost 20 years my senior in reality), his face thinner and more creased. He tells me that back in time, I listened to a woman, referring to his friend, and this had had a big influence on my ideas, and my feelings towards him. He's much more at peace than when I knew him, different, subdued. I break away, hoping to find them in the same place someday. The current draws me in the opposite direction.

I walk up the steps back to the 'top of the world' and wake up.

I am struggling to work out what the dream, and in particular my ex's message could mean... Any thoughts are greatly welcomed.

Going downwards tends to represent deeper unconscious thoughts and memories, or if you like more dream-like and less interference with the real "you". Similarly going upwards leads to waking, as indeed happened in your dream. Here you seem to be exploring some ideas you have of being at peace. A pool where everyone is happy and you all live together in harmony.

My interpretation would start with your own feelings. There seems to be conflict between what seems to be wise words from your ex and friend, and the current (whatever that represents). Also I wonder if it's not so much "him" that's at peace but some part of your own psyche. Place yourself in "his" image in the dream for a moment and consider what "he" is feeling. Feels good? Well maybe if you fight against the current you could feel like that too?
