giving up on flying
Greetings everyone! I'm really new to the forum and I just recently discovered what lucid dreaming is. I have never really known anything about what lucid dreaming is until watching a movie, which I bet alot of people here on this forum have seen, called Waking Life. After watching this movie I realized that I have been having lucid dreams for a long time. I've always thought it was an inconvenience during my dreams because this conscious dream state usually interrupts really enjoyable dreams. I have always started lucid dreaming during dreams where I realize that the dream I am having is just way too good to be true. It always starts during a dream where, for example, I am with a dream girl, i have just won the presidency or I have just won the lottery. All of a sudden, during the ecstacy and joy of these incredible feeling dreams, I realize, "Wait a minute, this is way to good be true. Oh, I am dreaming. This sucks!". Prior to understanding lucid dreaming, I usually just sat trapped in my dream really bummed out that what I was dreaming about wasn't real. Lately however after understanding what lucid dreaming is I have been having alot of fun playing around in my dreams. During my lucid dreams I have been having a problem with becoming so excited that I am lucid dreaming that I wake up in the middle of the night. All of my efforts during my most recent lucid dreams have been to fly but I am not sure if its going to be possible for me. Every attempt to fly i have made usually always ends in disaster. Last night I started lucid dreaming in the yard outside my house so I stood there for a second trying not to get too excited that I was lucid dreaming. Then as soon as I even started to think about flying I was thrust into space so far that I felt like I was playing around with the google earth program. I was moving so fast that earth looked like a marble to me after a split second. So i awoke this morning at about 3 am and my heart was pounding in my chest like I was on a roller coaster. I'm going to give up on flying for now and I don't really know what I am going to do during my next one.

Try use something to fly next time. Can you spawn things out of nothing? Try a Jetpack, a broom, a helicopter och just a Jet engine if you know how to.

as a side note, yes, you'll find many people on DV who have seen Waking Life.
As for flying, I can't say I've ever had much trouble with it. I had a dream some time ago where I could fly, and when I attempted to fly in a lucid, I just imagined that weightless feeling of flying, and it worked.
Don't think of it as literally flying, like an airplane. think of it more like floating. Like you're weightless. Stand up now (or later, doesn't really matter) and jump up and down as high as you cana few times. focus on the feeling you get, when you are just at the top of the jump, and for a split second, you're not going up or down, you just feel weightless. It' hard to describe, but I'm sure you know what I mean. Focus on remembering that feeling.
Now, next time you're lucid: don't try to fly, that won't work at all. Instead, just feel weightless. remember that feeling you got, when you jumped, and try to recreate that feeling. Imagine yourself feeling that way, and you will. Then, just gently float off the ground.
This is essentially what I did, I had it down on my second try. I'd be interested to see if it works for you as well.

Try taking a pill out of your pocket or finding one on the ground. It is a magic pill that will allow you to fly once you take it. Or you could press a button that activates your flying ability. It's more passive control, so it might be easier. It is for me.

NOt sure if this is what you're looking for, but my suggestion is: Don't give up. Flying is super-duper fun. And shooting off into space? That's awesome. You don't have to be on earth to have a good time. You can hang out in space. Check out the solar system. Whatever. I've done it. It's incredible. You'll get better control with experience. No doubt.
When I first started flying, I imagined I was a bird. I even flapped my arms. Pretty silly. But it worked for me. I don't do that anymore, and I'm still working on my skills. I just landed back on my feet for the first time in my dream, last night.
Keep trying. It's just too much fun to give up on.

There are all sorts of different ways a person can fly. Really, though, make sure you try to rationalize it in some way, now matter how strange and tedious the connection. This is called passive control, and over time, tends to yield better results than active control (e.g. this is a dream, so nothing is real, and I can do whatever I want). Think of it less as a dream and more of a world without bounds.
In terms of actually getting off the ground, the pill is a great idea, and so are vehicles (jetpacks, rockets, helicopters, jet fighters, etc), but if you prefer the wind-in-your-face feeling with nothing below you, jumping higher and higher really seems to help people. I haven't heard a lot of success stories with the "superman" style method, but those people are out there. The "Iron Man" style seems to tend to render better results. You're definitely going to have to play with it for a bit, but if you stick with it, the rewards are spectacular. ;)

I always had a hard time flying until I realized my true problem was that I was trying too hard. Once I let go and rather than forced myself to fly, just let myself fly, it became a lot easier.

It's taken me years of practice to get flying down...what helps me now is to jump up off the ground, and then make an invisible force push down from the bottom of my feet, like Ironman.
Sometimes you just have to try different techniques and see what works for you. Also, be aware that with something as powerful as the idea of gravity, it may take you a little time to "unlearn" it.

My problem with flying is that my dream seems to fade away everytime I start to fly. I can fly well in various ways, but usually the dream ends soon.
