dream control is a weird thing. If you say "i want to fly!" and on the same time you think:"but flying is not possible isn,t it?" you will never be able to fly you make your own laws in the LD world you really have to believe that you can fly you just think: "this is my LD world, i am mother nature i can fly because i want it and it is really easy!" Just believe you can fly and you will be flying with the birds!
Hey JungleJim!
1.) Welcome to Dreamviews!
2.) 150% Congratulations on finding the correct forum and even SUBFORUM to place this question in.
3.) As far as flying goes, it really depends on experience. Depending on the amount of lucid dreams you have, it could have a varying degree of difficulty.
Lets compare it to rollercoasters. The first rollercoaster you get on, you're already excited, and then you make that first big drop and you're getting so excited that it's unbelievable. About three years later, you've visited all the theme parks around, you love rollercoasters, and it's just another thing... but still exciting.
Now, you're probablly thinking... What the hell does rollercoasters have to do with Lucid dreaming? It's simple really. The first few lucid dreams you will have will be like that first rollercoaster ride... you're excited, and then attempting to do something exhiliarting will push your limit and you will most likely wake up. It may be better to wait (not three years!) untill you've had enough lucid dreams so that you are comfortable in them.
As far as you're inability to fly... that could stem from a few different things.
1.) Belief. The sub-conscious relys alot on doubt, and belief. If you don't believe you can do something in your lucid dream, (people who try to summon things or switch locations get this horribly) you won't end up being able to do it. So your best bet is to try and have a positive outlook on it.
2.) A subtle doubt. Much like #1, you have a little doubt about it. It's completely fine, you don't fly everyday! Something to do (if you have the ability) to help you with this, is to summon a set of wings for yourself. You can do that, or summon a flying potion. Anything that will aid you in believing that you can truly fly, and control your flight patterns.
Well, Hope I helped!
Try set a target which you want to jump too, pick somthign realy far and then proceed to try to jump to it, not realy flying but it is semi flying.
Another thing ive done is try to ride the wind, imagen the wind is strong and you can feel it now jump into it and try move with the wind like the wind.
I dont kow if it was too many superman vids when i was a kid but i can always fly liek him when i want to travel to soemwhere. i think of a destination i want to go then i simply start flying there. Im gonan be annoying and also say just do it, dont think about it just know you can do it then do it.
junglejim, honestly I fly without even thinking about it.. I simply have NO DOUBT that I can.
I either start running at full speed, leap into the air and think "up" or I jump into the air from someplace high. :flyaway:
Believe that flying is possible and it will happen! ;)

Yes, it's certainly about believing you can do it. Until you can visualize the process and believe you can make progress, you may stuggle. I realize this is somewhat putting the cart before the horse, but that's sort of a classic problem.
Second, why don't you try relating it to something you might know well - like swimming. If your at the bottom of a deep pool, how do you rise to the surface? You flap your arms powerfully and kick with your feet. Give this a try with flying, imagining a thickness to the air. That's what works for me.
Good luck.
I have trouble flying as well, and I've been LDing for a while now. I find that if i jump and and glide down sloly, i can build it up to flying. So I jump nd and slower then normal. Then start sprinting and jumping and glide down even more slowly and further. I do this a few times and then build up so I am high in the air and gliding around for a long time :) Try this out, it coud help.
In my non-lucids, floating and flying up to six feet above the ground is so natural and common for me I don't even recognize it as a dream sign.
For lucid flight, I've lately been using a golf umbrella. Just opening the umbrella up and having a will to leave the ground shoots me up into the air like I was a helium balloon. I steer using a short tree branch that I point in the direction I want the wind to blow.
