Why use portals? If you're not good with prolonguing your dreams, an attempt to change the scenario can ruin the very heck of it. Portals can be an useful tool, if used properly.
I'll try not to specify too much, as I say and insist, dream control involves creativity. It involves doing tasks in the simpliest way you find.
I created this portal technique in a Lucid Dream, and in the two Lucid Dreams i used them, I had awesome results. Firstly because they don't require much visualisation, all you have to do is to be able to imagine a whirlwind of some sorts. The second reason is that it gives your mind time to imagine the place where you want to go, while you are being warped. And lastly because it rocks

How to create a portal:
Use your arms for aid if needed. Try to feel like you are some oldschool magician preparing to cast a spell.
You should use your visualisation(read 'magical abilities') to create a tornado that faces you. Start with a small gate and then make it large enough for you to step through it. Just like one of those game portals in which you can see those moving clouds in:

Don't try to see the other side yet. Just step into your portal and feel its waves surround you (just like in a tunnel). You will be inside a long dimensional tunnel, moving to the other end. While in it, prepare where you are going: the surroundings, what/who you want to be there, etc. Once you're done with programming where you want to go, leave the dimensional warp through the other end.
As soon as you step out, you will land at the place you wanted to be. The portal you created will disappear immediately after.
Wasn't hard, was it?

It helps a lot to create a portal underneath you for teleporting; so that you don't have trouble stepping into the portal. Also, by doing this, you will eventually fall through the other end of your portal, making things even easier for you.
